Greece's government on Monday called for a parliamentary confidence vote -- the second this year -- after the opposition sought to censure one of its junior ministers.
"On behalf of the prime minister, I call on the chamber... to begin a procedure on a vote of confidence," deputy prime minister Yannis Dragasakis said in parliament.
Earlier, the main opposition New Democracy party had sought to censure deputy health minister Pavlos Polakis over comments he had made about one of its European parliament candidates, a former star student with spinal muscular atrophy.
Trailing in the polls, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras wants to galvanise his leftist Syriza party ahead of European and local elections this month, and national elections scheduled in the autumn.

With radical changes proposed to the Champions League, creating the possibility of a competition largely reserved for Europe's elite, domestic leagues and at least 150 clubs will gather for talks Tuesday in Madrid, ahead of a crucial meeting with UEFA 24 hours later.
European Leagues, the association of the continent's professional leagues, has invited some 900 clubs to the Spanish capital to discuss the future of European competitions and the threats posed by mooted reforms.
On Wednesday, UEFA's executive committee, chaired by president Aleksander Ceferin, will meet with Europe's football leagues to hold talks over the controversial revamp plans that could take effect from 2024.
Tuesday's assembly should provide an opportunity for representatives from lesser leagues and smaller clubs to find common ground in their fight to stop UEFA instituting sweeping changes.

Spanish goalkeeping great Iker Casillas left hospital in Portugal on Monday and said that his football future is uncertain, five days after suffering a heart attack during training with his club.
The 37-year-old, who has played for Porto since 2015, was admitted to hospital last Wednesday after suffering what the Portuguese club called an "acute myocardial infarction" in training.
"I feel much better," he told reporters outside the hospital in Porto.
"It will be rest for a couple of weeks, or even a couple of months. The truth is that I don't care.
"The important thing is to be here... I don't know what the future may bring."
Casillas has 167 Spain caps, winning the 2010 World Cup and two European Championships, and also played over 700 games for Real Madrid.

Ninety protesters have been killed in protest-related violence across Sudan since demonstrations against ousted president Omar al-Bashir erupted in December, a doctors' committee said Monday.
The death toll given by the committee is higher than the official figure of 65 killed in such violence since December.
The committee linked to the Alliance of Freedom and Change -- the group leading the protests -- said the first deaths came on December 20.
That was one day after a demonstration in the central town of Atbara in response to a government decision to triple the price of bread.

Clashes between Syrian regime forces and jihadists Monday killed more than 26 fighters in the country's northwest, which has seen an escalation in shelling and air strikes, a monitor said.
Eleven pro-government fighters were among those killed in fierce fighting in the northern countryside of Hama province, said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

A Mongolian couple has died of the bubonic plague after eating raw marmot kidney, triggering a quarantine that left tourists stranded in a remote region for days, officials said Monday.
The ethnic Kazakh couple died on May 1 in Mongolia's westernmost province of Bayan-Ulgii, which borders Russia and China.

South Africa on Monday signed a deal for the exploration and production of oil in South Sudan, as part of a USD 1 billion investment in the conflict-torn nation's struggling oil industry.
The deal will see South Africa's state-owned oil company, Strategic Fuel Fund (SFF), and South Sudan's Nile Petroleum Corporation, explore an area of 31,000 square kilometres (12,000 square miles) known as "Block B2".
South African Oil Minister Jeffrey Radebe described the agreement as "a great deal" for both countries.
Exploration will begin immediately, and is expected to continue for six years.
South Sudan has an estimated 3.5 billion barrels of oil with only 30 per cent of it being explored, Petroleum Minister Ezekiel Lol Gatkuoth said at the signing ceremony.
The country has the third-largest oil reserves in sub-Saharan Africa, according to the ministry.
At its peak, oil production in South Sudan was at 350,000 barrels a day, however production has been crippled, with oil fields severely damaged 

South Africa inks oil exploration deal with South Sudan

Fifty-eight people died in Niger's capital Niamey after an overturned tanker truck exploded as crowds collected spilt fuel, authorities and witnesses said Monday.
The blast on the RN1 route near the international airport Sunday night left the burnt truck's wreckage, motorbikes and debris scattered over the road. Nearby houses were damaged by fire.
The explosion left 58 dead, the presidency said in a statement.
"Motorbike riders and people were all around the truck when it exploded all of a sudden," a local trader said. "I saw at least 40 dead."
Witnesses said people were trying to collect petrol leaking from the truck, which had overturned on railway tracks, when the explosion happened.
"Just before midnight I went out and I saw the truck overturned. People came from everywhere to take gas, then I saw fire on its side and everything burst into flames," a college student told AFP.

Two Greek men were on Monday sentenced to over 21 years in prison for the racially-aggravated murder of a Pakistani migrant worker, a verdict that could impact the landmark trial of the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party, a court source said.
Shehzad Luqman was 27 when he was fatally stabbed by 29-year-old Christos Stergiopoulos and 25-year-old Dionysis Liakopoulos in 2013 whilst cycling to work in the Athens district of Petralona.
The pair's sentences were reduced on appeal on Monday, after a court of first instance had earlier handed down lifetime prison terms.
Luqman's murder is among crimes investigated in connection with the ongoing Golden Dawn trial, which began in 2015.
Police found a cache of weapons and Golden Dawn flyers whilst searching the defendants' homes.

21-year sentences in Greece for Pakistani's 'racist' murder

Bahrain's supreme court Monday upheld death sentences for two Shiite activists and jail terms for dozens of others on terror-related charges and links to Iran, BNA state news agency reported.
The court, whose rulings are final, also stripped 47 of the defendants of their Bahraini citizenship, said BNA, citing an official statement.
The court upheld life terms for 19 convicts and sentenced 37 others to between five and 15 years in jail, the statement said.
The men were charged of forming a "terror cell" that carried out a number of attacks, killing at least two policemen and wounding several others.
They were also convicted of smuggling weapons by boat, attacking a prison and helping a number of inmates flee, and undergoing military training in Iraq and Iran.
Thirty-six of those convicted, including the two sentenced to death, are being held in jail while the rest were sentenced in absentia.

Osaka still atop WTA rankings, Mertens drops

Kenya's Eliud Kipchoge will again target the mythical two-hour marathon barrier in a special race to be held between late September and early October, likely in London.
Kipchoge went close to smashing the barrier when he came in 25 seconds off the mark in a staged race around Italy's Monza race circuit in 2017.
"Running the fastest ever marathon time of 2:00:25 was the proudest moment of my career," Kipchoge said.

Drought has left nearly two million Somalis in desperate need of food, a humanitarian agency warned Monday, as poor rainfall pushes communities to the brink across East Africa.
The Norwegian Refugee Council said hundreds of thousands of children were already suffering malnutrition in Somalia and millions had abandoned their homes in search of food in the arid, conflict-torn nation.
"The humanitarian situation has deteriorated at an alarming rate as a result of the drought," Victor Moses, the council's country director in Somalia, said in a statement.
The failure of the so-called long rains that usually sweep East Africa between March and May has caused widespread crop failures and heaped immense pressure on livestock-dependent communities in the greater region.
Somalia is enduring its third-driest long rains season since 1981.
The United Nations estimates that 1.7 million people are going hungry, with that figure expected to grow by another half a million come July.
