Seeking to assuage concerns over foreign institutional investors (FII) selling Indian equities lately, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday attributed the action to profit booking.
Speaking to reporters in the financial capital, Sitharaman said the Indian economy is one where the investors are bagging better returns which leads to profit booking.
"FIIs also go out when they are able to or in a position to book profits. Indian market today, Indian economy today, has an environment in which investments are also yielding good returns and profit booking is also happening," she said.
It can be noted that FIIs have sold over Rs 1.56 lakh crore of stocks since October last year, including nearly Rs 1 lakh crore in 2025 itself, which has led to a sharp correction on the indices and wiping out investor wealth.
Finance Secretary Tuhin Kanta Pandey said FIIs are not moving from one emerging market to other, and added that in times of global uncertainties like the one being witnessed

Real estate company Mahindra Lifespace Developers plans to raise up to Rs 1,500 crore through issue of shares to eligible shareholders for reducing its debt as well as funding further growth.
The board of Mahindra Lifespaces Developers Ltd has approved the fund raise of up to Rs 1,500 crore through rights issue to the eligible shareholders of the company.
The proceeds will be utilised to pare down the company's existing debt and support its future growth plans, according to a regulatory filing on February 13.
Mahindra Lifespace is the real estate and infrastructure development business of the Mahindra Group.
Recently, Mahindra Lifespace reported a consolidated net loss of Rs 22.47 crore for the quarter ended December 2024.
The company had posted a net profit of Rs 50.02 crore in the year-ago period.
Total income jumped to Rs 185.77 crore in the third quarter of this fiscal, from Rs 88.77 crore in the corresponding period of the preceding year.

Indian companies take a cautious stance on US reciprocal tariff moves

The Mumbai police on Saturday arrested Hitesh Mehta, General Manager and Head of Accounts of the New India Cooperative Bank, for allegedly misappropriating Rs 122 crore from the bank, officials said.  Mehta was placed under arrest by the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the city police after being questioned for more than three hours, an official said.  He was called to record his statement before the probe agency at its south Mumbai office in connection with the case registered against him and others, he said.
Mehta will be produced before a local court on Sunday, the police official added.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Friday superseded the cooperative bank's board for a year and appointed an administrator to manage its affairs. A day prior to that, it imposed several restrictions on the lender, including on withdrawal of funds by depositors, citing supervisory concerns emanating from the recent material developments in the bank, and to protect the interest of its depositors.
