India comfortably chased down a modest target of 118 runs against South Africa, despite a slight delay in securing the win in Dharamsala. The hosts have taken a 2-1 lead in the 5-match series as well.
Winning the toss proved to be a crucial factor, as India’s pacers made full use of the early conditions, swinging the new ball both ways during the Powerplay. Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana were outstanding, maintaining tight lines and lengths to dismantle the South African top order. The visitors were in disarray after the first six overs, with none of the batters, except for Aiden Markram, looking comfortable against the swinging ball.
Markram stood firm, playing a resolute knock of 61 runs, which helped South Africa crawl to 117/10. Though the ball softened, India’s bowlers, including Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube, continued to apply pressure, with the spinners further strangling the South African middle order. Markram’s knock was the only shining light for South Africa, as the rest of the batting line-up struggled to deal with India’s disciplined attack. With wickets falling at regular intervals, South Africa never managed to build any significant partnerships, and they finished with a below-par total at the halfway stage.
In response, India’s chase began swiftly, with Abhishek Sharma once again getting off to a flying start, while Shubman Gill took his time to settle. The pair raced to 68 in the Powerplay, and it seemed like a mere formality with such a modest target in front of them. However, South Africa managed to slow the scoring rate in the middle overs. Despite this, India never looked in danger of falling behind, with Sharma’s aggressive strokeplay and Gill’s calm presence anchoring the innings. A boundary finally came after 37 balls, but India coasted home comfortably to seal the win with plenty of time to spare.
The match ended with India chasing down the target in just over 15 overs, maintaining their dominance throughout the game.
