CAT Percentile: What does it mean?
The percentile in the Common Admission Test (CAT) shows the percentage of candidates who scored lower than or equal to the marks of a particular candidate. Let's say the CAT percentile of a candidate is 99, it means the candidate is performing better than 99 per cent of all the other candidates. Candidates with 90 percentiles and above are among the top 10 per cent of the students.
For example, if 1000 candidates appeared for the exam, the first rank candidate performed better than 999 candidates who scored lower marks than topper. Here’s how the CAT percentile would then be calculated:
Percentile=(9991000)×100=99.9\text{Percentile} = \left(\frac{999}{1000}\right) \times 100 = 99.9Percentile=(1000999)×100=99.9.
Thus, the CAT percentile shows the performance of candidates relative to other candidates, not your raw score.
How does the CAT Scaled score work?
The CAT exam is conducted in three sessions with slight variations in question papers. A normalisation will give fairness and consistency in evaluating performance across the sessions. The scaled score is calculated through a specific formula that differs from the raw score. This normalisation process ensures all the candidates are evaluated on a level playing field.
