The rupee strengthened to its highest level in nearly three-and-a-half months on Wednesday, helped by dollar inflows for upcoming share sales and positive sentiment on the back of a strong euro.

The rupee on Wednesday shot up by a staggering 47 paise to close at nearly a three-and-a-half- month high of 53.31 on sustained dollar selling amid continued capital inflows, after the Reserve Bank of India cut lending rate to boost growth.

Bank of Baroda&rsquo;s (BoB) December 2012 quarter results were eclipsed by rising restructured loans and higher provisioning, leading to a sharp fall in net profits. Steep rise in provisions, up 23 per cent year-on-year (y-o-y) to Rs 1,029 crore, led to a 22 per cent fall in the net profit for the quarter. The decline in quarterly profit is among the first in as many as 30 quarters.

The rupee declined by 5 paise to Rs 53.33 per dollar in early trade on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today, weighed down by dollar&#39;s gains against other currency rivals.

Rising for a third straight session, the rupee on Thursday ended at a three-and-a-half-month high of 53.22, up eight paise against the dollar on sustained foreign fund inflows amid sharp recovery in euro. Forex dealers said continued dollar demand from oil refiners to meet their month-end requirements and weakness in local equities capped rupee&rsquo;s gains to some extent.
