AAP announces women's honorarium in Delhi; finance dept cites budget issues

AAP government's plan to provide a monthly honorarium of Rs 1000 to eligible women in Delhi before the upcoming Assembly polls, seems to have hit the bureaucratic logjam with the Finance department flagging budgetary constraints, officials said on Friday. The Mukhya Mantri Mahila Samman Yojna of the AAP government was announced in the budget 2024-25 for providing Rs 1000 to each of the eligible women in Delhi per month. An allocation of Rs 2,000 crore was also made by the government in the budget for the scheme. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) convener and former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has been reiterating in his Padyatra campaigns for the Assembly polls, that the scheme will be launched soon and the monthly honorarium will be credited to the bank accounts of the women. A week ago while campaigning in Burari constituency, Kejriwal also said that registration for the scheme will start very soon. HC refuses to prepone hearing on Kejriwal's plea in excise policy case

The Delhi High Court on Friday refused to advance the hearing on a petition by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal challenging a trial court's order taking cognisance of a chargesheet filed against him in a money laundering case. Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri said, "matter will be heard on the same date (December 20). I have a lot on the board to hear." Kejriwal had sought preponement of the date of hearing on his petition from December 20. After the court declined to change the date, Kejriwal's counsel pleaded that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) be directed to a supply copy of its reply to the petition in advance. "Whatever you file, give it to them also," the court told the ED's lawyer. On November 21, the high court refused to stay at that moment the trial court proceedings against Kejriwal in the money laundering case. The high court had issued notice and sought response of the ED on the plea by the former Delhi chief minister. Kejriwal sought setting aside of the trial court order and a

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann strongly condemned the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was fired at while performing 'sewa' outside the Golden Temple on Wednesday morning, and directed police to investigate the incident. The chief minister also lauded the promptness of the Punjab Police in nabbing the attacker. The man missed Badal as he was overpowered by police. The audacious attack was captured on cameras of media persons who had gathered outside the Sikh shrine to cover the second day of Badal's penance for "mistakes" committed by the SAD government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017. "Punjab Police prevented a major incident from happening today. It is the result of the promptness of the Punjab Police that the conspiracy to defame Punjab and Punjabis has failed," Mann said in a post on X. Kejriwal slams Centre for lawlessness after Delhi's triple murder incident

Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government after three members of a family were found dead at their home in the national capital. Describing the incident as "extremely painful and frightening," the AAP convener accused the Centre of allowing criminals a free hand and failing to ensure law and order in the capital. "Three murders in the same house in Neb Sarai This is extremely painful and frightening. Every day, Delhiites wake up to such frightening news. Criminals have been given a free hand, law and order has collapsed. Homes are being destroyed, innocent lives are being lost. And those who are responsible are silently watching all this happen," he wrote in a post on X. "Will the central government keep quiet like this and watch the law and order situation in Delhi collapse? Will its party still say that crime is not an issue in Delhi?" he added. The Delhi Police operates under the Union Ministry of Home .

AAP in a dangerous place now, can go to any extent for power: BJP

The BJP on Tuesday cited the conviction of AAP MLA Mehrauli Naresh Yadav in a case of desecration of the Quran in Punjab to accuse the party of going to any extent in its alleged greed for power. BJP spokesperson Shazia Ilmi told reporters that another AAP MLA, Naresh Balyan, was recently arrested by the Delhi Police on extortion charges, as she hit out at party leader Arvind Kejriwal. "Be it extorting money or stoking communal passion, such shrewd minds and such a party in its greed for power can go to any extent," she alleged. Ilmi, who was once with AAP before falling out with Kejriwal, said Delhi's ruling party says all kinds of things to get Muslim votes but its MLA conspires to defile the Quran in Punjab. Kejriwal's friend and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav should also talk about it, she said. "This party (AAP) has crossed all limits and come to a dangerous place," Ilmi said, adding that it is now up to the people to decide to get rid of such leaders. Ilmi suggested

AAP more interested in liquor sales than heath of Delhi citizens: Mandaviya

Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Monday slammed the AAP dispensation for not implementing the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme and said it is more interested in liquor sales than the health of Delhi's citizens. The Delhi assembly polls are slated for early next year. The minister's remarks also assume significance as they come a week after the Delhi High Court sought the AAP government's stand on a plea by Delhi's BJP MPs seeking implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Addressing a press conference here, Mandaviya said it was unfortunate that states like Delhi and West Bengal are not implementing the scheme even after repeated requests by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and letters from the Centre. "There could be political differences but public welfare works must be prioritised in India's federal democratic set up for the welfare of all," he said. "The government of India has written to the Delhi government urging it to implement

Delhi HC to hear plea by BJP MLAs seeking CAG reports in Assembly

The Delhi High Court will hear on December 9 a plea by the city's opposition leaders seeking a direction to place Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) reports related to liquor duty, pollution and finance before the Assembly. Justice Sanjeev Narula on Monday deferred hearing on the petition while noting that the pleadings in the case were not yet complete. While the counsel appearing for the petitioners stressed that the matter was urgent as the current Assembly session would lapse on December 4, the lawyer for the Delhi government said this was "not the last session". Senior advocate Sudhir Nandrajog, appearing for the Delhi government, said a reply to the petition was being prepared as the matter was earlier scheduled to come up on December 9. Even if the current session ended, the lieutenant governor has the power to re-convene it, he said. "This is not the last session and is not even the last assembly in Delhi. Raised issues hoping for Centre to act but I was attacked instead: Kejriwal

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday targeted the BJP-led central government for alleged inaction on law and order issues here, claiming that instead of taking action against criminals, an attack was orchestrated on him during his November 30 padyatra in Malviya Nagar. The BJP has yet to respond to the allegations. Speaking at a press conference, Kejriwal said, "The liquid thrown on me was harmless, but it could have been dangerous. This is the third attack on me in the last 35 days." The former chief minister also accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of sending the message that complainants, rather than offenders, will face arrest. Kejriwal also criticised the arrest of AAP MLA Naresh Balyan, who had earlier filed a complaint about extortion by gangsters. "Instead of arresting criminals, they are targeting our MLAs," the AAP chief alleged, demanding action against the real offenders to ensure the safety of Delhi's residents.
