Ruckus erupts in MCD house over Rohingya immigrants, Amit Shah's remark

The MCD House witnessed chaos on Thursday as opposition councillors staged a protest alleging the ruling AAP of sheltering Rohingya and Bangladeshi immigrants. The session, scheduled to begin at 2 pm, was yet to start as Mayor Mahesh Khichi had not arrived by 3 pm, further escalating tensions. BJP and Congress councillors stormed into the well of the House, climbed atop benches, and held placards with slogans targeting the Aam Aadmi Party. Some placards read, "Illegal Rohingyas and Bangladeshi immigrants are AAP's friends" and "Liar Kejriwal, shame on you." Slogans like "Mayor Shahab time pe aao' and "nahi chalega, aise house nahi chalega" echoed in the hall. The opposition councillors criticised the mayor's absence and demanded an apology before allowing the House to proceed. In response, AAP councillors raised slogans like "Baba Saheb ka apmaan nahi sahenge" and "Jai Bhim," targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah's recent statement in Parliament on the country's first law ...

AAP protests near BJP office over Shah's Ambedkar remark, demands action

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday led a protest near the BJP headquarters here over Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remark on B R Ambedkar, saying it hurt the sentiments of crores of Dalits and demanding "strict action" against him. Kejriwal said AAP will go door to door in Delhi ahead of the assembly polls due in February to tell the people about the "insult" of Ambedkar by the BJP leader. "The way Prime Minister Narendra Modi defended Shah, it appears that what he said in Parliament was a 'pre-meditated conspiracy' of the BJP," he charged. Shah's statement has caused a "grave insult" to Ambedkar. "He made fun of Ambedkar in a way," Kejriwal claimed. He added that Shah's remark has hurt the sentiments of crores of Dalits, backward and poor people in the country. The Union minister's remark also hurt the crores of followers of Ambedkar like him, the former Delhi chief minister said. "Strict action should be taken against Shah so that the anger of the people subsides even t

Kejriwal intensifies outreach, urges 100% women support for AAP in polls

AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal has ramped up his outreach, especially to women, ahead of the February 2025 Assembly elections. During a padayatra in the Badarpur constituency on Monday, Kejriwal cited a survey that he claimed shows 60 per cent of women in Delhi are set to vote for AAP. He urged the remaining 40 per cent to join the fold. "There must be some shortcoming in my penance that 40 per cent of women are not voting for me. This time, 100 per cent of women must vote for the Aam Aadmi Party," Kejriwal said. Last week, the former Delhi chief minister announced the launch of the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Samman Yojna to give monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 to women of the city and promised to raise it to Rs 2,100 after the elections. As he highlighted his party's work in the field of education, healthcare, and water supply, Kejriwal blamed the BJP for stalled development in areas like Badarpur, where BJP MLA Ramvir Singh Bidhuri won the election in 2020. "Many projects in Badarpur are

AAP unveils final Delhi poll list; Kejriwal criticises BJP for 'no CM face'

After AAP released its final list of candidates for the upcoming Assembly polls in Delhi, party supremo Arvind Kejriwal, who will contest from the New Delhi constituency, took a swipe at the BJP, alleging that the saffron party has no chief ministerial face. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday released its final list of 38 candidates for the Assembly polls due in February, fielding Kejriwal from New Delhi besides repeating Chief Minister Atishi from Kalkaji. In a post on X in Hindi, Kejriwal said, "The party is contesting the elections with full confidence and full preparation. BJP is missing. They have no CM face, no team, no planning, and no vision for Delhi. They have only one slogan, only one policy, and only one mission -- 'Remove Kejriwal'. Ask them what they did in five years, and they reply, 'Kejriwal ko bahut gaali di' (cursed Kejriwal a lot)." The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is yet to announce its candidates, is reportedly planning to pitch Parvesh Verma, son of ..

NGT urges coordinated plan between DDA, DJB to resolve pollution issues

Expressing exasperation at the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) and Delhi Jal Board (DJB) not agreeing on a coordinated action plan, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has observed that the State or its instrumentality cannot suffer a violation of the right to clean environment on any pretext. The green body was hearing a matter regarding health hazards to residents because of a stagnant open drain in south Delhi's Vasant Kunj. In an order passed on December 9, a bench of judicial member Justice Arun Kumar Tyagi and expert member Afroz Ahmad, taking note of the earlier proceedings, said, "The efforts made by this tribunal for coordinated resolution of the environmental issues did not succeed and the environmental issues were not resolved." The tribunal noted that on November 22, it had observed that the "DDA and DJB are not very serious about the protection of the environment and more interested in their financial matters, leaving people to suffer on account of continuous water ...

Drone mist-spraying pilot project in hitch for high costs, limited results

A pilot project that involves the use of drones to spray mist at pollution hotspots has not been approved over the high cost and lack of measurable results, an official has said. The technology was proposed as part of Delhi's 21-point Winter Action Plan to combat worsening air quality. Officials have deemed the project costly and ineffective, stating it has failed to deliver significant, measurable improvements. "The technology is extremely expensive and does not provide noticeable advancements compared to existing methods, which are already yielding better results at a fraction of the cost," an official involved in the evaluation told PTI. On November 8, a demonstration of the project was conducted at Anand Vihar, one of Delhi's most polluted areas. During the demonstration, Delhi Environment Minister Gopal Rai highlighted challenges posed by hotspots, such as narrow roads or congested areas where traditional modes of transport, such as trucks, cannot reach. Delhi HC to hear plea against Kejriwal's bail in excise case in Jan 2025

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday posted on January 17, 2025, the enforcement directorate's plea against the bail granted to former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in the 2021-22 excise policy-linked money laundering case. The ED counsel urged Justice Manoj Kumar Ohri to defer the hearing in the matter on account of the unavailability of additional solicitor general S V Raju. The request was opposed by senior advocate Vikram Chaudhary, representing the AAP leader, citing "pressing urgency" in the matter. Chaudhary said the agency should withdraw its plea and the court should vacate its stay on the operation of the trial court's order granting bail. "You can't have a sword hanging on my head," he said. The ED counsel, however, said Kejriwal was already on bail pursuant to an order passed by the Supreme Court. On July 12, the top court granted interim bail to Kejriwal in the money laundering case while referring to a larger bench three questions on the aspect of "need and necessity

SC relaxes Manish Sisodia's bail conditions in Delhi excise policy cases

The Supreme Court on Wednesday relaxed bail conditions of AAP leader Manish Sisodia which required him to report to the investigating officer twice a week in the corruption and money laundering cases related to the Delhi excise policy. A bench of Justices B R Gavai and K V Viswanathan relaxed the conditions, saying they were not necessary. "The petitioner shall regularly attend the trial," the bench said. The apex court on November 22 agreed to hear Sisodia's pleas and issued notices to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) seeking their responses on the applications. On August 9, the apex court had granted him bail in the corruption and money laundering cases linked to the alleged Delhi excise policy scam, saying long incarceration for 17 months without trial had deprived him of his right to speedy trial. The apex court had imposed conditions, including that he shall report to the investigating officer on every Monday and Thursday between

AAP terms BJP 'anti-Jat', questions 'delay' in Shokeen's appointment

The AAP Tuesday accused the BJP of having an "anti-Jat mindset" while citing the "delay" in the swearing-in of Raghuvinder Shokeen as a minister in the Delhi government. Shokeen's appointment as minister, to replace Kailash Gahlot who quit AAP and joined the BJP, was announced by the ruling party last month. In a joint press conference, AAP leaders questioned the "delay" in the swearing-in of Shokeen, an MLA from the Jat-dominated Nangloi constituency in the city. "The BJP's anti-Jat mindset has been exposed," AAP's chief national spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar charged. Even 20 days after his nomination, Shokeen has still not been sworn in as a cabinet minister, she said. "The AAP government on November 18 sent the file to appoint MLA Raghuvinder Shokeen as a Cabinet minister but it hasn't been approved yet," Kakkar claimed. Questioning the "delay", another AAP leader Anurag Dhandha said, "Does the BJP not want a Jat leader to become a minister?" The file for the appointment of a
