SC to hear plea to extend Sept 1 deadline for Bihar SIR claim filing

The Supreme Court on Friday agreed to hear on September 1 pleas of the RJD and AIMIM seeking extension of deadline for filing of claims and objections in the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. The deadline for filing claims and objections is also September 1. A bench of Justices Surya Kant, Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi said it will hear the applications of the political parties on Monday after advocate Prashant Bhushan and senior advocate Shoeb Alam, appearing for the Rashtriya Janta Dal (RJD), said that several of them have filed applications for extension of deadlines. Advocate Nizam Pasha, appearing for the AIMIM, said time needs to be extended due to large scale filing of claims and objections. "The number of claims filed are exponentially rising. The deadline needs to be extended," Alam told the bench. Pasha submitted that 80,000 claims were filed before the August 22 order while post the order 95,000 claims have been filed. "We are ..

Delhi HC upholds order against plea to de-register AIMIM as political party

The Delhi High Court has upheld a decision against a plea seeking deregistration of the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM by the Election Commission of India. In a judgement passed on January 16, a bench of former acting Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela agreed with the decision of the single judge. The division bench therefore dismissed an appeal by one Tirupati Narasimha Murari. "The single judge had accordingly held that ECI does not have the powers to deregister AIMIM on the grounds as set out by the appellant in the said petition. We concur with the said view. In view of the above, the appeal is unmerited," it held. Challenging the registration of All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Musalimeen (AIMIM) and saying as a political party, its constitution intended to further the cause only of one religious community -- Muslims, the plea alleged it was against the principles of secularism which every political party must adhere to under the Constitution and the Representati

AIMPLB meets UP CM for removal of order on unrecognised madrassa students

A delegation of the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) met Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday and demanded the withdrawal of a government order that directed the shifting of all students in unrecognised madrassas to state-run schools. Maulana Khalid Rasheed Farangi Mahali, who was present in the meeting at the chief minister's official residence, told PTI that the delegation was led by the board's general secretary Maulana Fazlur Rahman Mujaddidi. The delegation lodged an objection to the notice issued by the state government to 8,449 madrassas in Uttar Pradesh on the basis of which the district administration is ordering these madrassas to admit children studying there to schools for basic education. The delegation termed the order issued by the then Chief Secretary of the state Durga Shankar Mishra on June 26 as against the Constitution which has given minorities the right to establish and run educational institutions of their choice. Gujarat polls: AIMIM seeks to cement 2021 civic elections gains in Godhra

After an impressive show in last year's civic body polls in Godhra, a communally-sensitive town in Gujarat, the Asaduddin Owaisi-led AIMIM is now trying to build upon those gains in this Assembly seat in the upcoming state elections, banking on the minority base and division of votes of other candidates. The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) had won seven seats in the Godhra Municipal Council (GMC) polls last year and even tied up with independents to keep the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), its ideological foe, out of power. Independent candidate Sanjay Soni became the chairman of the GMC with the support of the AIMIM in February 2021, but severed ties with it in November that year after getting the support of the BJP which has 18 members in the 44-member house. In the upcoming Assembly polls, the AIMIM is making efforts to cement its position further, and aims to win the Godhra seat, currently held by the BJP. I am also a Marathi although my party is different. I have nothing to do with Eknath Shinde or Uddhav Thackeray. But the BJP succeeded in splitting the Marathi people, which no one could do," he said. "But Muslims will no more be a punching bag here and this is a positive thing for Muslims. Earlier, BJP and Shiv Sena used Muslims as a punching bag...we see their earlier
