SC grants bail to Andhra Pradesh journalist in offensive remarks case

The Supreme Court on Friday granted bail to senior journalist Kommineni Srinivasa Rao, whom the Andhra Pradesh Police arrested for allegedly making disparaging remarks against greenfield capital city Amaravati on his live show. The top court passed the order on Rao's plea challenging his arrest. A partial working day bench of Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan directed the release of 70-year-old Rao, who was arrested on June 9, noting that he did not make the statement on his show and it was one of the panellists who made the alleged derogatory remarks. Questioning the Andhra Pradesh government over the arrest, the bench said it was necessary that Rao's journalistic rights and his fundamental right to freedom of speech were protected. "The petitioner himself did not make the statement on the live TV show and his journalistic rights need to be protected so that his freedom of speech is also protected. We direct that the petitioner be released in the FIR subject to condition

Andhra increases maximum working hours from 9 to 10 to attract investments

The TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh has decided to raise the maximum working hours from nine to 10 per day as part of ease of doing business and attracting investors. The Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Minister K Parthasarathy said that it has been decided to amend labour laws to make them 'favourable' to workers and investors. CPI state secretary K Ramakrishna criticised the move and said NDA governments at the Centre and state are pursuing 'anti worker' policies. "Section 54 which allows maximum nine hours of work a day has now been raised to 10 hours per day. Under Section 55 there used to be one hour rest for five hours (work) now that has been changed to six hours," said Parthasarathy recently, elaborating on the decisions made by the cabinet to amend labour laws. Earlier, Parthasarathy noted that overtime was allowed only up to 75 hours which now has been extended up to 144 hours per quarter. "Because of this (amendments to labour laws), investors in ...

Vietnam's Vingroup in talks with Andhra, T'gana to widen presence in India

Vietnam's Vingroup, which is setting up a USD 2-billion plant in Tamil Nadu's Thoothukudi, is also in discussions with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments to expand its operations in India. VinFast, the electric vehicle (EV) unit of Vingroup, plans to launch its VF7 and VF6 models in India before the festival season this year. "We visited several states and inspected multiple locations...before finally zeroing in on Thoothukudi in Tamil Nadu because of the logistical advantages it offers... with a port and airport nearby," VinFast Asia CEO Pham Sanh Chau told PTI here. The launch of VF7 and VF6 -- likely before the festival season this year --will mark the entry of Vingroup, one of the leading conglomerates of Vietnam, into the Indian market. "Yes, we are in talks with other states as well. Our group sees India as a key market, and we could have a bigger presence there," Chau said. Apart from Tamil Nadu, negotiations are underway with Telangana and Andhra Pradesh governments
