Cancer attributable to prolonged stress suffered in Army job, says HC

The Punjab and Haryana High Court has dismissed the Centre's plea against grant of special family pension to an Army personnel who died due to cancer, observing that stress and strain for a prolonged period in military service can lead to the malady. The court also cited rules governing employees of the petitioner which stated that except for cancer due to smoking, the rest of the cancers have been treated to be attributable to military service. A division bench of Justices Harsimran Singh Sethi and Vikas Suri made these observations while rejecting the Centre's petition challenging a 2019 order of the Armed Forces Tribunal (Chandigarh). The tribunal had directed that Kumari Salochna Verma be granted special family pension from the date of her son's death. The petitioner's counsel submitted that Verma's son suffered from retroperitoneal sarcoma with widespread metastasis and died on June 24, 2009. The disease was found by the medical board to be "neither attributable to nor aggrav

IAF Chief urges joint planning centre, warns against rushed theaterisation

Air Chief Marshal A P Singh on Tuesday cautioned against going ahead with the theaterisation plan in a hurry and proposed the setting up of a joint planning and coordination centre in Delhi comprising top military brass to ensure tri-services synergy. In a fireside chat at the Army War College, the Chief of Air Staff, referring to proposed theatre commands, said creating a new structure while disrupting everything is not a very good idea at this point of time. The hugely significant remarks by the Air Chief Marshal came three-and-a-half months after India carried out Operation Sindoor that reflected various elements of synergy among the three services. In his remarks, Singh said the operation once again established the "primacy" of air power even as he highlighted the tri-services coordination during the May 7 to 10 conflict with Pakistan. The Chief of Air Staff said Chief of Defence Staff Gen Anil Chauhan played a "very big role" during Operation Sindoor. He highlighted how Gen ..

Delhi HC refuses to entertain plea to form Gujjar regiment in Indian Army

The Delhi High Court on Wednesday refused to entertain a public interest litigation seeking direction to the Centre for the formation of a Gujjar regiment in the Indian Army. A bench of Chief Justice D K Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela termed the PIL to be "absolutely divisive" and asked the counsel for the petitioner to do some research before taking up such petitions. Sensing the court's mood which warned of imposing costs on the litigant, the petitioner's counsel withdrew the plea. "After arguing at some length, the counsel for the petitioner states that she has instructions from the petitioner who is present in the court to withdraw the petition. The same is dismissed as withdrawn, the bench said. The court was hearing a PIL by one Rohan Basoya, claiming that the Gujjar community has a well-documented history of bravery, having participated in various wars, including the 1857 revolt, Indo-Pak wars of 1947, 1965, 1971, Kargil war (1999) and counter insurgency operations
