Indian contributions hailed as UK marks World War II end's 80th anniversary

King Charles III on Monday led the UK's commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, referred to as Victory in Europe (VE) Day, with a new public poll calling for greater recognition of the contributions of Indians to the war effort. A 2.5-million-strong British Indian Army, then under colonial rule, fought alongside the Allied forces to defeat Nazi Germany, with victory declared by Britain's war-time prime minister Winston Churchill in May 1945. They were joined by other Commonwealth soldiers from Africa and the Caribbean, an involvement seen as crucial in major battles, sustaining military campaigns and providing intelligence and medical aid. "We should step up efforts to raise awareness for forces from South Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, said Sunder Katwala, Director of London-based think tank British Future. Nearly half of us don't know about the Indian Army's role in World War II, when we're talking about 2.5 million soldiers. Moments like VE Day 80 are

Nigerian soldiers killed 79 militants, kidnappers in the past week: Army

Nigerian soldiers killed 79 militants and suspected kidnappers over the past week, the army said Friday, in an operation targeting a decades-long insurgency by Islamic militants in the northeast and attacks by various armed groups in the northwest. The West African country has been ramping up efforts to secure the country as some 35,000 civilians have been killed and more than 2 million displaced in the northeastern region, according to the U.N. The nationwide operation by Nigeria's military led to the arrest of 252 individuals and the liberation of 67 hostages held by the militants, a Nigerian military spokesperson, Edward Buba, said in a statement. Kidnappings have become a common occurrence in Nigeria's northwest, where dozens of armed groups exploit the region's limited security presence to carry out attacks on villages and along major roads. Many victims are only released after the payment of ransoms that sometimes run into the thousands of dollars. The 2014 kidnapping of 276

Ukraine reforming its recruitment efforts to attract younger soldiers

Ukraine is in the final stages of drafting recruitment reforms to attract 18- to 25-year-olds who are currently exempt from mobilisation as it looks for ways to bolster its fighting force, the battlefield commander recently appointed to the President's Office said. In his first interview with foreign media since taking up his new position last fall, Deputy Head of the Office of the President Colonel Pavlo Palisa said Ukraine is exploring new recruitment options because the current drafting system inherited from Soviet times is hindering progress. While Ukraine passed a mobilisation law last spring and lowered the age of conscription from 27 to 25 years old, the measures have not had the impact needed to replenish its ranks or replace battlefield losses in its war with Russia. One initiative is what Palisa described as an honest contract," a plan that includes financial incentives, clear guarantees for training, and measures to ensure dialogue between soldiers and their commanders. Army Chief Gen Upendra Dwivedi Wednesday sought to allay apprehensions over the safety of advanced light helicopter (ALH) and said the homegrown chopper has not hit a "rough patch" and it will remain a "workhorse" for the force. His comments during a press interaction held here after the 77th Army Day Parade come amid reports suggesting there could be safety concerns with this platform, especially after a crash incident in Gujarat's Porbandar early this month. Gen Dwivedi was asked if the ALH has hit a "rough patch" after the incident. "Let me assure the countrymen and my Indian Army that ALH has not hit a rough patch. This kind of a small accident keeps taking place, all over the world. Even the best helicopters which are there in the world, they also meet with such accidents," the Army chief said. In 2023 and 2024, the Indian Army has flown ALH for 40,000 hours. And, in those 40,000 hours there's only one glitch that took place, he said. "And, we are flying at altitudes of more
