Indian women go down to Thailand 0-1, fail to enter knockout stage

The Indian women's football team failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the Asian Games after their 0-1 defeat to Thailand here on Sunday. Indian side fought bravely but a 52nd minute goal from Thongrong Parichat helped Thailand to emerge winner in their Group B match. India had lost their Asian Games opener to Chinese Taipei 1-2. The defeat against Thailand also ended their chances of finishing among the three second placed teams, who will enter the knockouts along with five top-ranked sides, from five groups. But India made a composed start to the match and even looked the better side, creating a series of chances. Anju Tamang came up with the first promising move for the Indians in the 11th minute from the right flank before her low cross was intercepted. Five minutes later, Manisha Kalyan too created a couple of chances in the company of Bala Devi and Dangmei Grace, but they failed to yield any result. Indian fencer Taniksha Khatri goes down in QF, misses medal narrowly

India narrowly missed out on a medal in Asian Games fencing when Taniksha Khatri lost to world No 2 Man Wai Vivian Kong of Hong Kong 7-15 in individual epee quarterfinal here on Sunday. Khatri, who won her three pool matches to qualify for the knockout round, had seven touches but her opponent was superior and sealed the issue to make the semifinals. Khatri then prevailed over Uzbekistan's Shakhzoda Egamberdieva 15-10. Earlier in the pool matches, Khatri defeated Ivy Claire Dinoy of Philippines (5-1), Zolboo Ochirkhuyag of Mongolia (5-0) and Yemen's Samah Abdullah Musleh Alshami 5-1. India play out 1-1 draw with Myanmar, enter round of 16 in men''s football

Riding on a Sunil Chhetri strike, the Indian men's football team held Myanmar to a 1-1 draw and progressed to the round of 16 in the Asian Games here on Sunday. They will play Saudi Arabia in the pre-quarters. Chhetri scored from the spot in the 23rd minute but it was Rahim Ali who earned the penalty when he was brought down inside the box by Hein Zeyar Lin. While Lin was shown a yellow card for his sliding tackle, the peerless Chhetri made no mistake in finding the back of the net, in what was a repeat of the act he performed against Bangladesh in the second group game two days ago. Coming off the bench, Kyaw Htwe found the equaliser for Myanmar when he headed the ball past Dheeraj Singh in the 74th minute at the Xiaoshan Sports Center Stadium. However, despite the two teams having same points, India progressed as the runner-up from Group A, as the Chhetri-led side has scored more goals than Myanmar in the tournament. All in all, it was a creditable performance from the Indians
