A Bangladeshi court on Thursday issued a new arrest warrant against deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her daughter Saima Wajed Putul and 17 others in a graft case, accusing them of procuring a residential plot through "fraudulent" means. On Thursday, Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib accepted the charge sheet submitted by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). India scraps transshipment facility for Bangladesh's third-country exports

The government has terminated the transshipment facility that allowed export cargo from Bangladesh to third countries using Indian land customs stations en route to ports and airports, according to a government circular. Indian exporters, mainly from the apparel sector, had earlier urged the government to withdraw this facility to the neighbouring country. The facility had enabled smooth trade flows for Bangladesh's exports to countries like Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar. It was provided by India to Bangladesh in June 2020. "It has been decided to rescind... circular...dated June 29, 2020, as amended with immediate effect. Cargo already entered into India may be allowed to exit the Indian territory as per the procedure given in that circular," the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs' circular, dated April 8, said. The decision comes against the backdrop of the recent comments made by Bangladesh Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus on India's northeastern states. Yunus while addressin

Deposed Bangladesh PM Hasina warns strongly against bid to ban her party

Deposed Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday issued a stern warning against threats to ban her age-old Awami League, saying that the party is not a parasite or did not emerge with floodwaters. Their (the interim government) audacity astonishes me, she said, in a virtual address to party workers and supporters from India, where she now lives after fleeing Bangladesh in August last year after her nearly 16-year-long Awami League government was toppled in a student-led uprising steered by Students Against Discrimination (SAD). Nobel Peace Prize laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus, who was in a protracted row with the past regime for obscure reasons, flew from Paris three days later and assumed the charge of an interim government as the nominee of the SAD, which demanded the ban on Awami League. A part of SAD leadership recently floated a political outfit called National Citizen Party (NCP), visibly with blessings of Yunus, whose administration by now disbanded Awami League'

Over 100K members of Awami League fled to India: Information advisor

Bangladesh interim government's Information Advisor Mahfuj Alam on Tuesday claimed that more than one lakh members of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's Awami League have fled to India, according to media reports. Alam made the remark during an Eid gathering in Dhaka attended by families of individuals allegedly disappeared or killed during Hasina's tenure, Bangladeshi news portal bdnews24.com said. Human rights group Mayer Dak organised the event in the city's Tejgaon area, said a press release. Criticising Hasina, Mahfuj said she used enforced disappearances and killings as a means of avenging her parents' assassination, state-run news agency BSS reported. The highest number of enforced disappearances occurred in 2013 and 2014 when people were fighting for their voting rights. The main objective behind these actions was to destroy the electoral system, he said. The adviser said that the government has already formed a commission to investigate into enforced disappearances.
