Tejashwi rejects charge that caste survey data was manipulated to suit RJD

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav rejected the charge levelled by opposition BJP and its allies that findings of the caste survey have been manipulated to suit his RJD's prospects. Talking to reporters here on Saturday, he pointed out that his caste was the most populous even as per the 1931 census, and told the BJP to press the demand for a nationwide caste census if it was not happy with the state government's exercise. "Yadavs were 11 per cent of the total population in 1931 when Odisha and Jharkhand, too, were a part of Bihar. Nearly a century later, they are said to be 14 per cent. What is so irregular in that? he said. Had it been the state government's intent to fudge statistics for electoral gains, the numbers of the chief minister's caste would have also been increased, he added. The survey shows Kurmis, the caste to which Chief Minister Nitish Kumar belongs, as less than 3 per cent of the state's population. "We are thankful to the CM for the initiative that is

To encourage farmers to diversify from traditional paddy cultivation to commercially viable farming, the Bihar government has come out with several incentives and subsidies for planting aromatic and medicinal plants in the state. Bihar Agriculture Minister Kumar Sarvjeet told PTI on Saturday that, "The government is coming out with several incentives and subsidies to farmers to help cultivate aromatic and medicinal plants in the state. Have been vocal for women's quota since I was MP: Bihar CM Nitish Kumar

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Wednesday asserted that he was in support of women's reservation in Parliament and state assemblies though there must be provisions for adequate representation of SCs, STs, OBCs and EBCs. Speaking to reporters, he urged the Centre to move fast on implementing the proposals in the women's reservation bill by conducting the census, and consider his long-standing demand for a caste census. "I have been in support of women's reservation. Why should they not be assured representation? My speeches during the days I was a member of parliament bear testimony to my stand that remains unchanged," said Kumar. "We have ensured adequate representation of women wherever it is possible. In panchayats, urban local bodies, government jobs, including the police force, the representation of women in Bihar is highest for any state in the country," he added. Kumar said it must also be ensured that there is a provision for ensuring that women from SCs, STs, OBCs and

Display MMGAY logo on houses being constructed under scheme: Bihar govt

The Bihar government has directed district authorities to display the "logo" of the state-sponsored 'Mukhya Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana' (MMGAY) in all houses that are being constructed under the scheme in the rural areas. In a recent circular issued to all Deputy Development Commissioners (DDCs) and other concerned officials of the district administration, the state Rural Development department has asked the DDCs to ensure the display of the logo in all houses being constructed under the MMGAY and 'Mukhya Mantri Vas Sthal Kraya Sahayata Yojana'. Bihar Rural Development minister Sharvan Kumar said that houses built under Indira Awas Yojana (IAY) before 1996 have become dilapidated. Families belonging to Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Extremely Backward Classes (EBC) reside in them. These families don't get benefits from the Central government's ongoing housing schemes as they had already been provided funds under the IAY. "But now their houses are in shabby condition

Bihar caste survey: SC defers hearing for Oct 3 on plea against HC order

The Supreme Court on Wednesday deferred for October 3 the hearing on a plea challenging the Patna High Court's August 1 order giving the go-ahead for a caste survey in Bihar. A bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti noted there was a request for adjournment by one of the parties in the case. The apex court listed the petition filed by NGO 'Ek Soch Ek Prayas' along with other pleas against the same order of the high court. On August 7, the top court had refused to stay the Patna High Court's order giving the go-ahead for a caste survey in Bihar, and deferred the hearing on petitions challenging it to August 14. Besides the plea by 'Ek Soch Ek Paryas', another petition has been filed by Nalanda resident Akhilesh Kumar, who has contended that the notification issued by the state government for the exercise is against the constitutional mandate. Kumar's petition says in terms of the constitutional mandate, only the Union government is empowered to conduct a census. "In the .

Tejashwi slams BJP, rejects speculations of unrest in Mahagathbandhan

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Sunday alleged that the CBI's chargesheet against him was a part of the BJP's tactics" to tarnish the reputation of its opponents. Talking to reporters upon return from a long vacation, Yadav also rubbished speculations of a rift within the state's ruling Mahagathbandhan, which he blamed on media outlets acting as spokespersons of the BJP. Yadav spoke at the airport here, with his father and RJD supremo Lalu Prasad by his side who chose to stay silent, letting the son and heir apparent do the talking. The BJP has been jittery since the day Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and we joined hands. The case against me has no substance. All of us understand the game well. The BJP will get a befitting response in the Lok Sabha elections next year, Yadav said. He was abroad when the Central Bureau of Investigation last week came out with a fresh chargesheet in the land-for-jobs scam, with his name among the accused, alongside his father and mother Ra

Bihar BJP president Samrat Choudhary on Friday said that all alleged love jihad' cases will be probed in the state if his party is voted to power in the 2025 assembly elections.
