Heavy rain, cancelled flights as typhoon approaches Japan

Heavy rain fell on parts of Japan and airlines cancelled flights today as an approaching typhoon threatened to dump more rain on a region devastated by floods and landslides earlier this month. Typhoon Jongdari was heading west along Japan's Pacific coast and was expected to make landfall in central Japan overnight. It had maximum sustained winds of 126 kilometers per hour (78 miles per hour) with gusts up to 180 kph (112 mph). Many flights were delayed or cancelled at Narita and Haneda, the two main airports serving Tokyo. Most of the cancellations were domestic, though some international travellers were stranded. The storm brought intermittent heavy rain and windy conditions to Tokyo and a wide swath of the surrounding area. After making landfall, it is forecast to continue west, where residents were bracing for more rain in an area still recovering from unusually heavy rains that killed more than 200 people in early July. Authorities issued evacuation advisories ahead of the storm,

Thick mud hampers Laos dam rescue with hundreds still unaccounted for

Rescuers battled thick mud and flood waters across a swathe of remote southern Laos to find survivors of a dam burst that submerged entire villages, as an official suggested more than 1,100 people may still be unaccounted for. The exact number of dead and missing from Monday's dam collapse remains a mystery because of the complexity of the rescue operation in an inaccessible area and the secretive reflexes of Laos's Communist authorities in the face of an unprecedented crisis. "The search is very complicated, many areas cannot be accessed by cars or boats. Also we have limited modern equipment to bring to the field," deputy secretary of Attapeu province committee Meenaporn Chaichompoo told reporters Friday. She also said hundreds still have not been located, five days after the dam burst. "We can't find 1,126 people," she said, adding that 131 have been confirmed missing by relatives. Initially officials said 27 people were confirmed dead, but Meenaporn reduced that to six, without ...

They were found wrapped in the embrace of their grandparents among 26 bodies outside a villa near the sea at Mati. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said Friday he assumed "political responsibility" for the tragedy as a bitter debate raged over who was to blame.
