Storms in India: 10,000 people marked safe on Facebook safety tool
Facebook on Tuesday said nearly 10,000 people have marked themselves safe till now, using the social network's "Safety Check" feature that was activated on Monday following storms across India.

Haryana Health Minister Anil Vij said that director level officers have been deputed in all districts to ensure proper inspection, supervision and management of the health centres and hospitals in the state. These officers would provide assistance in removing shortcomings in hospitals to facilitate patients, Vij said in an official release here yesterday. He said that these officers would visit allocated districts regularly and supervise the Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, Sub Divisional hospitals and district hospitals. Apart from this, they would submit their suggestions to the health minister or the health department for fulfilling the requirements in hospitals so that people would not face any inconvenience, he added.
US diplomat involved in road accident in Pak returns home
A US diplomat, who killed a Pakistani motorcyclist in a road accident last month, has left the country amidst controversy over his immunity from prosecution. Defence attache Colonel Joseph Hall killed a motorbike rider and injured another on April 7 in Islamabad after jumping a red signal. A case was registered but he was never formally arrested due to diplomatic immunity. The government reportedly took the decision after the US government assured that Colonel Hall will be tried under US laws, the diplomatic sources were quoted as saying by Dawn News. The diplomat has since left for Afghanistan on a special flight. The US Embassy in Islamabad also confirmed that the US diplomat has left Pakistan, the report said. Diplomatic sources further confirmed that Colonel Hall was a US diplomat who held absolute immunity as per the Vienna Convention of 1972 and the privileges Pakistan extends to diplomats. Relatives of the victims had asked the government to prosecute Colonel Hall for murder. ..
Compensation given to storm victims
District authorities have distributed ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh each to family members of two persons killed in the district in the recent storm. Zishan (22) and Riyasat (55) were killed in Mujheda and Pawti villages respectively in the district on Sunday. Both were killed after a tree fell on them, said District Magistrate Rajiv Sharma. As many as 80 people were killed in five states due to thunderstorms and lightning strikes since Sunday, with Uttar Pradesh alone recording 51 deaths.
Thunderstorm: UP farmers suffer loss of mango crop
Apart from inflicting loss of lives and properties, the recent thunderstorm has also destroyed the mango harvest in northern India.One of the affected farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur district told ANI on Monday, that he suffered a loss of Rs 1 lakh.He appealed to the government to provide give him an aid."I have suffered a loss of about Rs 1 lakh. It will be good if the government provides us compensation, otherwise we are destroyed," the farmer said.According to the Union home ministry, at least 80 people have died across five states: West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and Delhi-NCR; in the past two days due to thunderstorms and lightning strikes.In Uttar Pradesh alone, over 50 people have died, whereas 14 people have lost their lives in West Bengal and another 12 in Andhra Pradesh.The latest devastation comes nearly two weeks after dust and thunderstorm claimed 134 lives injured 400 people in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand and Punjab.

US diplomat, involved in car crash, leaves Pakistan
United States diplomat Colonel Joseph Emanuel Hall left for his country on Monday, a day after Pakistani authorities prevented him from leaving Pakistan.Hall was involved in a fatal car accident in Daman-e-Koh, north of Islamabad as he, on April 7, jumped a red light and rammed into a motorcycle killing one Pakistani civilian, as reported by the Geo news.Following the incident, the Pakistani authorities forced the U.S. Air Force C130 to land at Pakistan's Nur Khan air base and leave without diplomat Hall.A Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officer on duty stopped the diplomat at the airbase and seized his passport and then resorted to seeking directions from his higher authorities.Colonel Hall returned to the embassy later.He was reportedly sloshed while driving the white Land Cruiser involved in the accident.An Islamabad court has ruled that Hall's diplomatic immunity does not protect him in the case.On the other hand, the US government had refused to exempt Joseph from the ...
3 dead in house collapse
Three persons were killed when a house collapsed in the Sadar Bhatti area today, the police said. The incident took place when the house of Haji Abid was undergoing repair works, the police said. The house collapsed and the debris fell on the passers by, they said. Three people, included two women, were killed in the incident.
Pakistan: US diplomat involved in road accident returns home
Three senior Pakistani officials say a US diplomat who killed a Pakistani motorcyclist in a road accident last month has left the country after getting clearance from authorities. The officials said that US military attache Col Joseph Emanuel Hall was allowed to leave the capital Islamabad and head home today. The development comes days after Pakistan sent back an American plane, delaying the return of Hall to the United States. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to brief reporters. Hall ran a red light and hit motorcyclist Attique Baig last month but was not arrested as he enjoyed diplomatic immunity.

Actress Prarthana Behere hurt in road mishap
Marathi actress Prarthana Behere was today injured in a road accident near Lonavala town on Pune-Mumbai expressway, police said. The incident occurred when Behere (25) was travelling to Kolhapur, located around 239 kms away from here, for promotion of a Marathi film along with co-actor Aniket Vishwasrao and her hair stylist. "The driver of the car in which Behere and others were travelling in lost his control over the vehicle while trying to avoid hitting a tempo parked at roadside. However, he rammed into the same tempo," a district police officer said. In the mishap, one of Behere's hands got fractured, he said, adding that she also sustained injuries to one of her legs. "Vishwarao and other occupants of the car escaped unhurt," he said. The 'Pavitra Rishta' actress was rushed to a private hospital by her colleagues for treatment. Her condition is stated to be stable, the officer said.
Narrow escape for 50 people as Gurgaon restaurant catches fire
Around 50 people had a narrow escape when a fire broke out at a restaurant in a shopping mall here today, an official said. The fire broke out at around 12 pm in the Moti Mahal restaurant located at the third floor of Ansal Plaza in Palam Vihar, he said. "A team of firefighters with two fire tenders and local police were rushed to the spot. Within a few hours, the flames were doused and around 50 people were safely rescued from the restaurant," Gurgaon Police PRO Ravinder Kumar told PTI. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, he said.
Thunderstorm claims six lives in Bihar
At least six persons, including a girl aged under four years, were killed and several others injured early today when thunderstorm lashed parts of Bihar, uprooting trees, electric poles and billboards. According to a release issued by the state disaster management department, two women were killed in Saran district where Kanti Devi (50) was crushed to death by an uprooted tree in Sadar block while Ram Pati Devi (55) was struck by lightning in Masrakh. Three-and-a-half-year-old Aradhana Kumari died in Khagaria district when the roof of her house collapsed due to the thunderstorm accompanied by rainfall. Her sister Aditi (05) and mother Seema (32) have sustained serious injuries. Akhilesh Rai (35) was killed in a wall collapse in Yaduvanshi Nagar Bagicha of Patna while an uprooted tree fell on Krishna Gaur (40) in Sasaram block of Rohtas.
