Eight students were injured following a "commotion" during a function at Mithibai College in suburban Vile Parle Thursday evening, a civic official said. While initial reports suggested that there was a stampede, an official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said it was not a stampede but a minor incident caused by panic. Boys from the neighbourhood thronged the college auditorium during a singing performance and some students complained of suffocation which led to people running helter-skelter, said the official from the BMC's Disaster Management Unit. Injured students were taken to the nearby Cooper Hospital and their condition was stable, he said.
The Maharashtra government Thursday approved formation of a university named after renowned nuclear physicist Homi Jehangir Bhabha in a bid to enable students to opt for a "choice-based credit system" and study the subjects of their choice. The approval for setting up the Dr Homi Jehangir Bhabha University was given by the state Cabinet at its meeting here. Education Minister Vinod Tawde, addressing reporters at Mantralaya, said the university will consist of the Institute of Science, the Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics, the Elphinstone College and Government college of Education (BEd College). "Once this university is established, students will have the option of studying through a choice-based credit system. For instance, a student studying commerce in Sydenham College will have the option of studying arts as well in Elphinstone College," Tawde said. The ABVP Thursday accused the NSUI of not allowing the Delhi University Students' Union to function and making false allegations against them. A state-run school in Bihar's Vaishali district has been found allegedly segregating students along caste and religious lines, prompting the government to order an inquiry, an official said Thursday. The district administration has also asked the Bihar education department to take "exemplary action" against the school's principal as the "allegations have been found to be, prima facie, true". District Magistrate Rajiv Raushan said the inquiry was ordered following media reports claiming that students belonging to different castes and religious communities were made to sit separately at the G A Higher Secondary School in the district's Lalganj block. The Delhi University is planning to introduce online entrance exams from next session onwards, officials said here. The Admissions Committee of the varsity had met early this year and it was decided that the varsity would have online entrance examinations to ensure that students who have not secured high percentage of marks also stand a chance to study in Delhi University. "The proposal to have online entrance examinations was made by the Department of Commerce. Some members said the online mode would be difficult for students from far-flung areas who are not well-versed with computers," said an official. The official said it was decided that there would be an offline as well as an online entrance exam to the varsity. Women candidates secured the top three positions of the Odisha Civil Services Examination 2017, the results of which were declared by the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) in Cuttack Wednesday. While Ayushi Mahapatra has topped the OCS Examination, Sanjita Mohapatra and Poonam Mahapatra have secured the second and third rank respectively, officials said. Students of the Aligarh Muslim University held a candle light peace march to protest against the recent killings of seven civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district. The students, led by leaders of the AMU Students Union, Wednesday evening wore black bands and carried placards which said 'Kashmir is Bleeding', 'No More Hate' and 'Respect Human Rights'. The seven civilians died in south Kashmir's Pulwama district on December 15 when security forces allegedly opened fire at an unruly crowd that tried to storm the site of an encounter in which three militants and an Army man were killed, police had said. The students began their march from the Maulana Azad Library which culminated at the Baab-e-Syed gate. Four students were arrested for allegedly duping a Delhi University professor of Rs 17.5 lakh after promising to get his daughter admitted to a medical college, police said Wednesday. Ajeet Kumar (26), Manish Kumar (26), Idharth (25) and Shahzad Mussaraf (25) met the complainant, Prakash Ranjan Mondal, on several occasions and took money from him, police said. While both Ajeet and Manish were pursuing MBA from Bhopal, Idharth was a student of B.Sc (Physics) and Mussaraf was pursuing BA from a Bihar university, they added. On November 30, Mondal stated that he was cheated by Saksham Enlightenment and Services for the admission of his daughter at Sapthagiri Institute of Medical Sciences and Research Centre (Hessarghata), Nupur Prasad, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) said. Two teachers were injured in a clash between two groups of people in front of a private primary school in Coochbehar district Wednesday, police said. The clash occurred just before the school compound at Gitaldaha under Dinhata police station area, before the classes began for the morning section of the private school. Eyewitnesses claimed that the two teachers were hit by bullets during a shootout between the two groups but the police denied that any gunshot was fired. The injured teachers, Majnu Haque and Manowar Hossain, were now being treated at a local hospital.

Two people, including an engineering student, were arrested by the CB-CID wing of the Tamil Nadu police Wednesday in connection with the recent leak of a mathematics question paper of Anna University. Another wanted person, working in the office of the Controller of Examination (CoE) at the university and allegedly leaked the paper, was absconding and efforts were on to nab him, a CB-CID press release here said. Based on a complaint by the Controller of Examination M Venkatesan, K Suresh Kumar and A Harikrishnan, a B.Tech student, were arrested, it said. Kumar had allegedly obtained a copy of the maths question paper from his relative working in the CoE and given it to Harikrishanan, his childhood friend. Harikrishnan made use of the question paper and also circulated it among his friends, the release said. After information about leak of the Mathematics II paper of the exam held on December 3 emerged, the university had cancelled it and held a re-exam on December 12.

Assam government Wednesday said it will set up three medical colleges in three districts of the state entailing an expenditure of Rs 1,186 crore. The foundation stone of all the three medical colleges which will add 1500 beds to the existing facilities in the government sector will be laid in early January, Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said. "In order to achieve the goal of bringing the healthcare facilities to all corners of the state, the government is going to start three new medical colleges at Nalbari, Kokrajhar and Tinsukia," Sarma told a press conference here. Each college will have 500 beds for patients, 100 MBBS seats for students, he added. The government has earmarked Rs 398.31 crore for Nalbari Medical College, Rs 382.70 crore for Kokrajhar Medical College and Rs 404.63 crore for Tinsukia Medical College. The 462 new Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRSs) for tribal students, proposed to be constructed by 2022, will be on par with Navodya Vidyalayas and have special facilities for preserving local art and culture, Union minister Jual Oram said Wednesday. The government will set up an autonomous society, on the lines of the Navodaya Vidayalaya Samiti, to run the ERMSs, the tribal affairs minister said. Oram made the announcement two days after the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved the setting up of 462 new EMRSs by 2022 in every district or block with more than 50 per cent Scheduled Tribes (ST) population and at least 20,000 tribal persons. At present, there are 284 EMRSs in the country, of which 219 are operational. The government has decided to construct 462 new EMRSs by 2022, the minister said.
