The Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) is not considering any proposal to set up environment education centres to expand environmental engineering courses across the country, Parliament was informed Monday. The information was shared by Union Minister of State for HRD Satya Pal Singh in response to a written question in the Lok Sabha. "There is no such proposal with the HRD Ministry to set up environment educational centres for expanding environmental engineering courses across government-aided institutions," Singh said. "However, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has prepared a six months' module for environmental studies for implementation in undergraduate courses in universities," he added.

Having a daughter makes men less likely to hold traditional attitudes towards gender roles, a trend that became particularly pronounced when daughters reached school-age, a study has found. Researchers from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) analysed the effects of becoming the parent of a daughter on both men and women. A representative sample of parents from a survey spanning two decades in the UK between 1991 and 2012 were assessed on whether they supported the notion of the 'traditional male breadwinner', with the wife as a homemaker. Researchers found strong evidence that having daughters decreases fathers' likelihood to hold traditional attitudes towards gender roles, a trend that became particularly pronounced when daughters reached school-age. Two children were killed and three others injured after a wall of a school building collapsed on them in a village here Monday, police said. The incident took place around 10 am at a private primary school in Salarpur village under Sector 49 police station limits, they said. "Two children have died, while three others were injured in the incident," Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Gautam Buddh Nagar, Ajay Pal Sharma said. The injured students were undergoing treatment at a local hospital, he said. SSP Sharma and District Magistrate Brajesh Narain Singh met the families of the victims and took stock of the situation, officials said. The cause of the wall collapse is yet to be ascertained, they said.

The Centre has accorded approval for the establishment of one more Sainik School in Haryana, fulfilling a long standing demand of the people of the state, an official release said here Sunday. A Memorandum of Agreement would soon be signed between the state government and the Ministry of Defence for setting up of this school, the Haryana government release said. The state government would provide Rs 50 crore for the construction of the Sainik School on a piece of land measuring 38 acres that has been provided by Gram Panchayat, Matenhail, it said. After Kunjpura in Karnal and another such school in Rewari district, Matenhail school will be the third Sainik School. It may be recalled that Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar in a letter to the then Defence minister Manohar Parrikar had requested for the setting up of a school at village Matenhail to enable the youth of the state to pursue their desire to join the defence forces and serve the nation. Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar Sunday said the number of beneficiaries of the Student Credit Card (SCC) scheme in the state has gone up to 25,000. The number of beneficiaries under SCC scheme has gone up to 25,000 within three-four months of Bihar State Education Finance Corporation (BSEFC) taking up the job to disburse soft loans to students to pursue higher education, he said. "I am happy to say that BSEFC has started functioning for past three-four months (for disbursing loans under SCC scheme). The scheme has become popular among students. I am told the number of beneficiaries under SCC scheme has gone up to 25,000 within three-four months of BSEFC starting its work," Kumar said. The Bihar government had launched the SCC scheme on October 3, 2016. Earlier the number of beneficiaries could barely reach 9,000 in past one and half years when SSC scheme was routed through banks, he said. The Delhi government has directed 105 schools in the national capital to put on hold their nursery admission process as they failed to make their criteria public within the prescribed deadline. The application process for admissions to entry-level classes in over 1,600 private schools began Saturday. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has also advised the parents to not approach these schools till the department issues further order to avoid any inconvenience to them in case any penal action is initiated against defaulter schools. "In order to maintain transparency and uniformity in admission, the admission process of these 105 schools at entry level for session 2019-20 shall be on hold till further orders," a senior DoE official said. "If it is found that the said schools are taking admission despite being prevented to do so, necessary action as per norms will be taken without any further notice," the official added. Thane police have connected with several colleges here for a mass awareness drive among youth on the dangers of drug addiction, a senior police official said Sunday. The drive began last week and officials as well as the constabulary have begun visiting colleges to speak to students there as part of the campaign, he said. The drive, which began at Dr Bedekar College here, is expected to go on till December 19, police said. "We are roping in 25 colleges with 7500 students for the drive. We intend to make it into a year-long mission. One constable will act as a nodal officer for each college and will meet student volunteers to get details of the drug network, addicts, points of supply etc," Thane Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar told PTI Sunday.

A three-year-old student of a private play school died after allegedly drowning in a swimming pool at a farmhouse in Telangana's Ranga Reddy district.The incident took place on December 15 when the school organised a sports cum carnival day at the farmhouse located in Moinabad police station limits for the students and their parents.A case has been registered after parents of the deceased filed a complaint in this regard blaming the school management for negligence.Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Shamshabad, N Prakash Reddy said, "We have received the complaint from the parents of the deceased and a case under Section 304A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been registered."The body of the deceased has been shifted to a local government hospital for post-mortem while further investigation is underway.

The Jammu and Kashmir administration on Saturday approved the establishment of first university in Ladakh region, a spokesperson said. The approval for setting up of the university was given by the State Administrative Council (SAC) which met here Saturday evening under the chairmanship of Governor Satya Pal Malik, he said. It would be a cluster university covering five colleges of Leh and Kargil districts, the spokesperson said, adding, "The university will be established with an initial grant of Rs 65 crore to be provided next fiscal.
Delhi Education Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday lashed out at the BJP-run DDA for not giving enough land for construction of a school that has been operating out of an Eidgah, calling the BJP anti-education. No immediate response was available from the BJP or the DDA. Sisodia said the DDA committed to the high court to give 4,000sq metre of land to the Delhi government for construction of a school which has been operating out of an Eidgah since 1976 in Ballimaran area. "But now the DDA is saying it would allot just 1,600sq metre of land and reduce the number of classes that would be taught. They are planning to give just a lane for the school which is not acceptable," he told reporters. He lashed out at the DDA for being "anti-education".
