CU students without 60 pc attendance cannot appear for exams

The Calcutta University authorities Saturday asked affiliated colleges to ensure that students were not allowed to appear for examinations if their attendance is below 60 per cent, a university official said. Pro-Vice Chancellor (academic) Dipak Kar informed principals of several colleges at a meeting that 60 per cent attendance is a must for appearing in examinations for under-graduate and post-graduate courses. Kar also said at the meeting that there would be more Multiple Choice-type Questions (MCQ) across all streams from the next academic session. From the next academic session, Bengali, English and Environment answer sheets will be in Optical Mark Reader (OMR) format, the official said. It was also decided at the meeting that students will not be given honours if they failed to get below 40 per cent marks in a stream and will not be eligible for pass if they secured below 30 per cent marks in both theory and practical, the official said.

C'garh: HNLU students to go on hunger strike against VC

Students of Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU) protesting against Vice Chancellor Dr Sukhpal Singh Saturday decided to go on an indefinite strike from October 1. Akansh Jain, a member of the Student Bar Association (SBA) of the university told PTI that students had lost faith in the "incompetent" administration and "arbitrary and discriminatory" decision making style of Dr Singh. Students have been protesting since September 25 demanding the VC's resignation. The student body held a meeting Saturday with Chancellor A K Tripathi but it did not yield any result as he did not indicate if he would ask Dr Singh to resign, Jain said. "Thereafter, the students decided to sit on a hunger strike from 8am Monday," Jain said. U'khand to host 'Gyankumbh' in Haridwar

Education ministers of all states will converge in Uttarakhand's Haridwar on October 3 for a two-day brainstorming session to deliberate on methods to enhance the quality of higher education in the country. Unveiling the logo for the'Gyankumbh' Saturday, Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat said it will be inaugurated by President Ram Nath Kovind. Distinguished academics and education ministers from all states will gather at the event to be held at Patanjali Yogpeeth to suggest ways to bring about a qualitative improvement in higher education, Rawat said. The event will be the first-of-its-kind, he said. An emphasis on innovation and research is required to expand the scope of education but it should be done in such a way that the basic purpose of education to inculcate values among students is not lost," the chief minister said. TN Governor appoints Balasubramanian as Tamil varsity VC

Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit Saturday appointed G Balasubramanian as Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Thanjavur, for a three-year period. Purohit is also the Chancellor of the university. Balasubramanian has vast experience in teaching, having served in various senior academic positions as dean and head of the department, a press release from Raj Bhavan said. He is Pro Vice Chancellor of Dravidian University and has published 22 research papers at national and international level and has authored four books, it said.

Over 600 prisoners, 700 students to take Gandhi Peace Exam

About 600 prisoners and over 700 college students will appear for the Gandhi Peace Examination Sunday ahead of the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi. October 2, Gandhi's birth anniversary, is globally observed as the International Non-violence Day. The examination, which tests the knowledge of Gandhi's life and thought, is organised by Sarvodaya Mandal every year. Inmates of Nagpur and Washim Central Jails along with officials of Washim Jail will appear for the examination on October 2, said TRK Somaiya of the Mumbai Sarvodaya Mandal. Over 270 inmates of district jails of Dhule, Chandrapur, Alibaug and Akola appeared for the examination in September. Over 700 students of the Rustomjee College in Thane and K J Somaiya College and Bhausaheb Hiray College in Mumbai will appear for the examination Sunday. Somaiya also said that books on Gandhi will be sold at 50 per cent discount from October 2 to 11 at the Gandhi Book Centre in Mumbai.

Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said Saturday it was becoming increasingly difficult to retain good science and mathematics teachers in village schools and these subjects were not being offered in the higher classes in such schools. Raise qualifying marks for pursuing medical courses abroad: HC to MCI, Centre

The Madras High Court Friday restrained the Medical Council of India and the Centre from issuing eligibility certificate to foreign medical education aspirants if their score was less than 80 per cent in the qualifying Class XII exam. Flagging the low pass percentage in screening tests for foreign medical graduates, the court said minimum qualifying marks should be raised from 50 per cent to at least 80 per cent. Passing the order on a petition by a foreign medical degree holder, Justice N kirubakaran pointed out that in the past 10 years, only 15-25 per cent of doctors with foreign degrees managed to clear the mandatory screening test, the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination, conducted by the National Board of Examination to practise the profession in India. "This would only make one to understand that the minimum marks of 50 per cent prescribed by MCI has to be revised and higher marks have to be prescribed," the judge noted. Manipur bandh partially affects normal life

Normal life was partially hit for the second day on Friday in the state, particularly in the valley districts, due to a 48-hour general strike by students' bodies demanding unconditional release of students and teachers of Manipur University, official sources said. Fifteen teachers and students of Manipur University were arrested by police on September 21 following a complaint by newly-appointed Acting Vice Chancellor K Yugindro Singh. Patna HC initiates contempt proceedings against BSEB Chairman

The Patna High Court on Friday initiated contempt proceedings against the chairman of the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB) for deliberately not implementing its orders. Justice Chakradhari Sharan Singh ordered the contempt proceedings against BSEB chairman Anand Kishore, an IAS officer, on a petition filed by a school in Vaishali district challenging the Board's order dated April 12, 2017 cancelling the school's affiliation. The authorities of the Sri Ram Chandra Senior Secondary School came up with a grievance that despite quashing of the order of cancellation of affiliation by the court, the school is not being treated as affiliated to the Board. Space Education Centre inaugurated

Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday inaugurated the Space Education Centre and Innovation Hub at the Nagaland Science Centre here. It is being set up by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Nagaland in collaboration with the National Council of Science Museum, Government of India.
