Oil major ONGC Tuesday said it is carrying out a drinking water project in over 50 schools across Assam in this financial year, entailing an investment of Rs 1.68 crore. During 2017-18, ONGC's School Drinking Water Project had benefitted more than 10,000 children in 32 schools in Sivasagar and Charaideo districts of Assam that entailed an investment of Rs 1.07 crore, the PSU behemoth said in a statement. "In financial year 2018-19, the project is being extended to 52 schools, which would benefit more than 15,000 school children, at a project cost of Rs 1.68 crore," the statement said. "Providing clean and safe drinking water in schools in and around ONGC's operational area is a CSR initiative by ONGC Assam Asset in association with ONGC's All India OBC & MOBC Employees Welfare Association," the company said. After a gap of nearly 22 years, student union elections would be held in colleges and universities of Haryana before October 15, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said Monday, saying the ruling BJP has thus fulfilled its poll promise. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has given his approval to allow conduct of student union polls in college and universities, fulfilling a long pending demand of the students, Sharma said, adding with the decision to conduct the polls the BJP has fulfilled its promise made at the time of 2014 state assembly elections. Student union elections in Haryana would be conducted before October 15 for the current academic session of 2018-19, he said in a statement. A foolproof system will be put in place to ensure free, fair and peaceful elections, it said. A section of the agitating students of Presidency University here began indefinite hunger strike from Monday night demanding immediate accommodation in the under renovation Hindu hostel. Altogether 50 students have been on a sit-in demonstration at the university campus since August 3 and eight have started the indefinite fast. "The fast began at the campus portico from 9 pm and it will continue till the authorities take initiative to shift the 50 students to two blocks of Hindu hostel immediately," Ujan, one of the agitating students, told PTI after a general body meeting of students in the campus. Students union elections were not held in these institutions last year. Y Amar of economics department, N Nimai (physics), M Ranjit (mathematics) and N Debananda (biochemistry) have been charged with "misconduct", an order signed by registrar in-charge M Shyammesho said. The Delhi government is sending as many as 60 principals of its government schools to the prestigious Cambridge University in England for a training programme. Announcing the decision on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said the principals would be sent in two batches of 30 each for the Inspiring Leadership Improving Performance. While the first batch will be at Cambridge between October 8 -17, the training for the next batch will be from October 19-28.
