Counting of votes for the JNU students union (JNUSU) polls was suspended Saturday by election authorities citing "forcible entry" and "attempts to snatch away ballot boxes" at a counting venue, after the ABVP staged protests claiming it was not informed about the start of the process. The deadlock at the Jawaharlal Nehru University persisted even after 12 hours, with the the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) which is the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), accusing the election authorities of bias towards the Left outfits and threatening to move court. The Left outfits alleged that ABVP activists were involved in the violence but the saffron outfit denied it. The counting was suspended early morning after ABVP members protested alleging they were not informed about the process. The Urdu version of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's book 'Exam Warriors' was released in the presence of several Union ministers on Saturday. The book, which focusses on 25 mantras for parents and students to cope with the stress of exams, has earlier been published in 14 languages. "This book could not have been written by anyone else other than the prime minister and its aim would have remained incomplete if it had not been published in Urdu. Eighteen tribal students were rescued from a Buddhist missionary school in Bihar and brought here, a Tripura minister said Saturday. The children, belonging to the Mog and the Chakma community at Pencharthal in the North Tripura district, were sent by their families for studies in Bodh Gaya, but the school was shut down two months ago without informing their parents, state Health and Family Welfare Minister Sudip Roy Barman said. The children were rescued by Bihar police which also brought them here by train. Roy Barman received the children Friday evening at the Agartala railway station. "There is a sigh of relief for all of us that the children have returned to Tripura. The Department of Tribal Welfare will ask the Bihar government for proper investigation of the incident. The IIT Kharagpur has signed MoUs with the University of Houston and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for joint academic and research collaborations. The MoU with University of Houston was signed on Friday at Houston in the presence of Chancellor Renu Khator and Director P P Chakrabarti, an IIT KGP statement said Saturday. The initial areas identified for collaborations include petroleum engineering, covering niche aspects of chemical engineering, advanced materials, deep sea technology, analytics and industrial engineering, the statement said. The voter turnout in the keenly contested Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) election on Friday was 67.8 per cent, believed to be the highest in six years. Over 5,000 students cast their votes. The counting has begun and the results are expected to be announced on Sunday. "From 2012, the elections are being conducted as per the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations. In the last six years, I have not seen this high voting percentage," an official said. Last year and in 2016, the voting percentage was 59 per cent. In 2015, the voting percentage was 55 per cent. In 2013 and 2014, the percentage hovered around 55 per cent while in 2012, the voter turnout had reached 60 per cent. A vocational training teacher at Gujarat Vidyapith here, a deemed university founded by Mahatma Gandhi, has been sacked following a complaint of sexual harassment by a woman student. "The Woman Development Committee of the Vidyapith found merit in the allegations against this teacher, so we have removed him from service," said registrar of the varsity Rajendra Khimani. A student of a post-graduate course at Mahadev Desai Samajseva Mahavidyalay, which is situated on the Vidyapith campus here, had filed a complaint against the male teacher four days ago. The woman, who lives in the varsity's hostel, alleged that the teacher often touched her inappropriately and sexually harassed her. "We recorded statements of the woman as well as the teacher. We found the incident did take place. Even the teacher admitted to it," said Anandi Patel, head of the committee. Gujarat Vidyapith was founded by Mahatma Gandhi in 1920. Cambridge University has unveiled plans to introduce bursaries to enable serving or former prisoners in the UK to complete an under-graduate degree course from the world-famous institution. The four 5,000 bursaries being offered for the university's Institute of Continuing Education, which provides part-time and short courses for adult learners, will lead to a Higher Education Certificate. Prisoners who are still serving time when they apply for such a course will need to be in an open prison and have a day-release licence to be able to spend 14 days on campus, the 'Times Higher Education' magazine reports. Saurashtra University (SU) at Rajkot in Gujarat suspended on Friday a professor accused of sexually harassing a doctorate student. Vice-chancellor Nilambari Dave said the action was taken against the professor, who is attached to the varsity's Bio-Science department, following a meeting of SU's syndicate. A woman student who was pursuing her doctorate under the professor's guidance had alleged that he sexually harassed her and threatened not to let her finish her PhD if she did not cooperate, the vice chancellor said. "This is a serious matter. To maintain students' faith in the university as well in its teachers, the syndicate members met today and decided to take a stern action against him," Dave said. "He has been suspended with immediate effect," she said. The complainant woman told reporters that she has also decided to approach police. However, no criminal case has been lodged yet.

Drumming for 60 minutes a week can benefit children diagnosed with autism and supports learning at school, according to a study. Researchers at the University of Chichester and University Centre Hartpury in the UK showed students' ability to follow their teachers' instructions improved significantly and enhanced their social interactions between peers and members of school staff. The participants took part in a ten-week drumming programme comprising two 30-minute sessions each week. Observations of the weekly lessons also highlighted significant improvements in dexterity, rhythm and timing, researchers said.
