Student killed in twin bomb attack near Afghan girls' school: officials

A boy was killed and four others wounded in a double bombing outside a girls' school in restive eastern Afghanistan on Tuesday, officials and witnesses said, in the latest violence to hit the country. The first explosion happened in front of Malika Omaira girls' school in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, at around 8:30 am, provincial governor spokesman Ataullah Khogyani told AFP. A second bomb went off as students from a neighbouring boys' school and locals gathered at the scene, Khogyani added. Witnesses told AFP the casualties were students from the boys' school. "We went with other boys to see what had happened after we heard an explosion near the girls' school," 12-year-old Elyas told AFP from his hospital bed. Madhya Pradesh: Bridge construction delayed, students cross rivulet to school

Risking their lives, students of Hatta's Madiyado have to cross a rivulet to reach their school as the bridge across the water stream is under construction for five years now.Students travel around two kilometres every day to reach school and the absence of a bridge or an alternate way poses as a difficulty to students."We can't reach school during heavy rains. We want the bridge to be constructed soon", said the students.Though no casualties have been reported so far, but the situation worsens during rains which lead to high water current. J-K: Udhampur becomes open defecation free district

The district administration of Jammu and Kashmir's Udhampur district on Monday declared the whole district Open Defecation Free (ODF). A total of 75000 toilets have been constructed in all 230 panchayats of the district.All the families identified in the district were provided with toilet units. The district has registered 100 per cent physical achievement in Swachh Bharat Mission - Gramin.An event was organized by the District Administration to celebrate the achievement. Presidency: VC stopped from entering campus, convocation venue

The vice-chancellor and registrar of Presidency University were stopped from entering the campus Monday by agitating students, forcing the authorities to shift the venue of Tuesday's convocation. After agitating at the university since August 3 demanding accommodation in the adjacent Hindu Hostel, the students this morning blocked the main gate of the institute. Ujan, a member of students' organisation Independent Consolidation (IC) and one of the 50 agitating students, said he inspected the Hindu Hostel Sunday along with others and found two blocks ready for use. "The authorities have been claiming that the hostel is undergoing renovation work, but we found out that two of the six blocks are suitable for use. With no solution in sight, we bolted the main gate in the morning, demanding we be allowed to put up in those two blocks," he said. Three school buses targeted in Pune during 'Bharat Bandh'

Three buses of a private school here were stoned and damaged Monday during the 'Bharat Bandh' called by the Congress and various other opposition parties, the school management and police said. However, no one was injured in the incident that took place early morning in Undri area when the buses were on their way from the Caelum High School to pick up the students. Following the incident, the school was closed for the day, the school's Director Monica Thadaney said. The nationwide bandh had been called by the Congress and other opposition parties to protest against the rising fuel prices. "The incident occurred after three buses of our school left the school premises to pick up students. While the buses were on their way, some unidentified persons hurled huge stones at them, damaging the windowpanes and windshields," she said. Calcutta HC initiative to get 'sexually abused' child admitted to school

In a bid to secure the future of a girl, who was allegedly sexually abused by two teachers last year when she was 4, the Calcutta High Court Monday took the initiative to get her admitted to a different school. Justice Nadira Patherya directed the school here, where the incident allegedly took place, to formulate guidelines for its teachers on dealing with its students to ensure their safety and a proper personality development. The court ordered the school to submit the guidelines before the court on September 20. SC notice to CBSE on contempt plea alleging violation of order on fees

The Supreme Court Monday issued notice to the CBSE on a plea seeking contempt action against the board for allegedly "disobeying" the top court's order and charging exorbitant fees of up to Rs 1,200 from students for obtaining copies of evaluated answer-sheets. A bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Navin Sinha and K M Joseph asked the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to respond to the plea within six weeks. The contempt plea has alleged that the CBSE has wilfully and deliberately disobeyed the directions of the apex court, which had in 2016 said that the board should 'scrupulously' follow its 2011 verdict holding that the students have the fundamental and legal right to access their evaluated answer-sheets under the Right to Information Act. It has claimed that despite the apex court's direction, the CBSE had published a notification prescribing fee of Rs 1,000 and Rs 1,200 for students of Class 10th and 12th respectively to obtain the evaluated answer-sheets. Boy ends life after being pulled up for prank message

A class nine student of a school here allegedly committed suicide Monday after being chided for a prank holiday SMS he had sent recently, police said. The boy hanged himself at his house, they added. He had sent the message to students saying that it was a holiday for the city corporation-run school, believing which around 50 of classmates did not turn up, police said. When the school authorities investigated the issue, it came to light that the boy had sent the message. The headmaster called the boy's father and mother, a school teacher herself, and rebuked them for the boy's behaviour. His classmates also chided him following which the dejected boy ended his life, police said.

Students leaving IIM-S due to shortage of hostel rooms

Some students of the Indian Institute of Management, Sambalpur (IIM-S) have left the institute as they could not get hostel rooms, an official said Monday. The classes for the fourth batch of the IIM-S commenced on July 30 this year. There were 111 students when the classes started but now the number of students has decreased to 99 as the institute was not able to provide hostel rooms to some students, IIM(S) director Mahadeo Jaiswal said. The IIM-S which started functioning from Sambalpur in 2015 had doubled its intake capacity to 120 from 60 this year. It is functioning from the premises of the Sambalpur University now as it does not have a permanent campus of its own.
