Third edition of Smart Hackathon launched

Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar today announced the launch of the third edition of "Smart Hackathon", a national competition for students to develop digital solutions for real life problems. In the earlier two editions, the HRD Ministry used to invite problem statements from ministries and state governments and the students were free to choose from them and work on solutions. "We have been doing it for two years. This is third edition of Smart India Hackathon and in September we will seek problem statements from ministries and state governments. For the first time we will also seek suggestions from industry people if they have any unsolved problems which they are seeking solutions for," Javadekar told reporters here. "From October the students will be able to register. In the first edition of Hackathon, 40000 students had participated in the first edition while last year over 1 lakh students took part. Taking science practical classes in rural schools of Odisha's Koraput district, which was difficult due to absence of required equipment, would not have been easy if Om Prakash Mishra had not penned the book titled 'Experimento'. The science practical handbook by Mishra gives a pictorial presentation on how various science experiments can be done with locally available resources. Within four years of its publication, the book has become a favourite among the science teachers of rural areas. The 48-year-old teacher is all set to receive the National Award for Teachers-2017 in New Delhi on September 5. He is the only teacher from Odisha among the 45 teachers selected for the national award given by the Ministry of Human Resources Development this year. PCPNDT training programme case: HC asks govt pleader to get directions from DME

The Madras High Court directed today the government pleader to get instructions from the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) on a plea moved by a post graduate medical student seeking direction to restrain the DME from conducting six-month training programmes in pre-conception and pre-natal diagnostic techniques in violation of law. A division bench of Justice S Manikumar and Justice Subramonium Prasad passed the oral instruction on the plea moved by X Sebastian Antony, a second-year student of MD Radio Diagnosis in Stanley Medical College. According to the petitioner, nearly 550 students have been admitted by the DME in the six-month training programme in violation of the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of sex Selection) (Six Months Training) Rules, 2014. 8 students of DU's journalism school suspended for 'disrupting classes'

Eight students of the Delhi University's Delhi School of Journalism were today suspended for allegedly "disrupting classes" while students claimed that they were protesting for their demands. Around 100 students have been protesting since yesterday against the lack of facilities in the college despite the college charging over Rs 60,000 annual fees, said one of the students. Eight students of the Delhi School of Journalism were suspended for allegedly "disrupting classes" and "obstructing official work", said an official from the college. Sources claimed that later, the students' suspension was revoked following student protests. One of the students, who was suspended, said, "We have been staying in the college since yesterday because despite paying high fees, they (the institute authorities) do not even have functional computers inside the college. Expressing concern over the way Parliament has been functioning in recent times, marked by frequent adjournments, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu today said all parties and MPs need to ponder over the matter. Medical colleges named after prominent personalities

Odisha government today named two new state-run medical colleges at Balasore and Bolangir after two prominent persons of the localities, official sources said. According to a resolution issued by health and family welfare department, the new government medical college at Balasore has been named as Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital. Similarly, the Bolangir government medical college has been named as Bhima Bhoi Medical College and Hospital. Earlier, two government medical colleges at Koraput and Baripada were also named after two prominent persons. While medical college at Koraput has been named as Saheed Laxman Naik, Medical College and Hospital, the medical college at Baripada is titled as Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital. Three other medical colleges set up in Cuttack, Berhampur and Burla decades ago also were named after prominent personalities.

New science & tech council formed to advise PM

A 21-member committee has been set up to advise Prime Minister Narendra Modi on science, technology and innovations, a top official said today. The Prime Minister's Science Technology and Innovation Council (PM-STIAC) includes noted mathematician and Princeton University professor Manjul Bharghava; and Major General Madhuri Kanitkar, the first woman dean of Army Forces Medical College, Pune; said K VijayRaghavan, the principal scientific adviser to the Government of India. Headed by Raghvan, the committee also comprises A S Kiran Kumar, former ISRO chief; Ajay Sood, professor at the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru; Subhash Kak, professor at the Oklahoma State University, United States; and industrialist Baba Kalyani. Education department officer held for bribe

An education department officer was arrested today here in Maharashtra for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2.50 lakh from officials of a school, the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) said. Brijesh Gupta, an extension officer of the department posted at Vasai here, had allegedly demanded a bribe of Rs 6 lakh from the headmistress of the school for granting approval for starting new classes (from Std VI to XII), the ACB said in a release. He later reduced the amount to Rs 5 lakh which was to be paid in instalments, it said. The school management agreed to pay the amount and the same time lodged a complaint with the Thane unit of the ACB, the anti-graft agency said. ACB officials laid a trap and arrested Gupta when he was accepting the first instalment of Rs 2.50 lakh, the release stated. The 41-year-old has been booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act, it added.

Rajasthan govt sends 91 students to Silicon Valley

The Rajasthan government has sent 91 students under 'Student Startup Exposure Program' to Silicon Valley as part of its efforts to promote entrepreneurship in the state. As part of the two-week programme, from August 26 to September 10, the students visited Stanford University's various departments, including artificial intelligence centre, nano fabrication research centre and department of computer engineering on the first day, an official statement said. The students will also get an opportunity to learn various aspects of building a startup from renowned experts and receive mentorship to create a prototype and pitch it to prospective investors in Silicon Valley. According to the statement, during the programme, the students will also get a chance to acquire on the job training at some eminent organisations and interact with successful founders and other key professionals.
