The Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights has come down heavily on St. Columba's School after a sixth standard student lost a part of his finger in the institution's premises.Taking cognizance of the case, the commission has issued a notice to the school directing them to state the sequence of events on an affidavit, along with the names of persons involved and of those who accompanied the child to the hospital.In the notice to the principal, the child right's body has asked the school to describe the reasons behind occurrence of the incident and those for delay in providing adequate medical attention. The institution has also been asked to furnish its existing plan of action to deal with similar occurrences and details of action taken against those responsible.Putting the onus of the child's well being on the school, the commission has also asked them to submit details of steps taken to mitigate the damage caused to the student's physical and psychological health.The school

At least 16 students and a staff member of a private school here were hospitalised today due to suspected food poisoning, a civic official said. The Class 7 students and the staff member ate food (dal khichdi) served to them at the Sahyadri Vidya Mandir in suburban Bhandup following which they complained of stomachache. They were admitted to a hospital in Mulund, the official of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said. The students -- 12 girls and four boys -- and the school staffer were responding to the treatment and will be kept under observation for 24 hours, a doctor attending them said. Food poisoning is suspected to be the cause of the illness, the civic official said, adding that an inquiry would be conducted into the matter. On August 10, a girl student of a civic-run school in Govandi area here died while over 400 other students were hospitalised due to suspected poisoning after they took iron- boosting medicines given by the school.
A case of treason has been filed against three teachers of a madrasa here after a video purportedly showed them stopping children from singing the national anthem during the Independence Day function, the police said today. The video of Maulana Zubaid Ansari of madrasa Arbia Ahle Sunnat stopping the children from singing the national anthem during the I-Day function after unfurling of the national flag went viral in the district yesterday. District Magistrate Amarnath Upadhaya ordered an inquiry by district minorities officer Prabhat Kumar and a case was lodged against three teachers under various sections of the IPC, including treason. One of the teachers has been arrested and a hunt was on to nab the remaining two, police said.

Rajasthan will observe September as the "month of nutrition" to create awareness among people living in the state, Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said today. Addressing the state from the SMS stadium here on Independence Day, Raje announced that from next month, students of Class 1 to 8 of government schools will be given milk daily instead of thrice a week. The government had introduced a scheme to provide milk to students in government schools thrice a week last month. From September, the students will get milk on a daily basis for which additional funds of Rs 203 crore will be allocated, she said. In the month of nutrition, the chief minister said, awareness in rural as well as urban areas will be created for nutrition. Tamil Nadu Higher Education Secretary Sunil Paliwal and Anna University Vice Chancellor M K Surappa today rejected allegations of a scam in admission of engineering students to the varsity's constituent colleges. Addressing a joint press conference, they referred to reports in a section of media about admission of more than 60 students, whose names were not mentioned in the final admission list, in 2017-18 academic year. : A 13-year-old school boy drowned while participating in a swimming competition organised at a temple pond at Thalassery in Kannur district. Ritwick was a ninth standard student of the New Mahe M M High school, police said. He along with 150 students were participating in the competition, organised by a group of government schools of Thalassery sub-district. Police said the boy drowned in the second round of competitions when he was in the middle of the pond. Noticing him struggling in the water, some people jumped in, but could not save him. Police and fire force personnel pulled out the boy, who was declared broght dead at a hospital here. The Haryana government has decided to increase salary of guest teachers by nearly 25 per cent, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said today. Besides, women guest teachers have been given five additional days of casual leave, Sharma said. He said Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had accorded approval to this proposal. "The monthly salary of PGT or lecturer (guest teachers) has been increased to Rs 36,000 from Rs 29,715, whereas the salary of TGT and C and V guest teachers has been increased to Rs 30,000 from Rs 24,001, and the salary of JBT and C and V guest teachers has been increased to Rs 26,000 from Rs 21,715," Sharma said in an official release here. The women guest teachers used to get 15 days casual leave in a year, which has been increased to 20 days.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh inaugurated today a government senior secondary smart school in the Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) campus here to boost education standards in the state. To be equipped with laptops, multimedia projectors and high-speed internet, the smart schools will make the teaching-learning process easier and more effective, said the chief minister, adding that a total of 261 government-run schools in the state would be transformed into smart schools. Students in Maharashtra who have cleared their 10th and 12th standard re-exams can seek admissions to professional courses by August 31, Education Minister Vinod Tawde today said. Addressing a press conference here, he said the state government had urged the Supreme Court to allow such students to take admissions by August 31 and the SC had acceded to its request. He said the re-exams are conducted in July but results are declared by August-end. As per orders of the apex court, admissions to professional courses need to be completed by August 15. Due to this, students who appeared for re-exams would not have been able to seek admissions in such courses. The state government had sought permission from the apex court to allow students whose results would be declared towards the end of August to take admissions in professional courses by August 31.
