Presidency teachers urge students to withdraw agitation

A group of 36 teachers of the Presidency University has jointly urged the agitating students of the institute to withdraw their 12-day-old stir promising them to monitor renovation work of the Hindu Hostel building. Altogether 50 students have been on an indefinite sit-in at the university campus demanding that they be allowed to stay at the Hindu Hostel which has been on renovation for the past three years. Ayan Chakraborty, an activist of students' body Independent Consolidation (IC), today said 36 teachers handed over yesterday a joint letter to the agitating students who comprises members of the IC, SFI and a few others who are not affiliated to any union. "In the letter, the faculty members urged us to withdraw the movement stating that it is affecting the normal functioning of the institute and promised to monitor the renovation work of the Hindu Hostel," Ayan said. JNUTA condemns attack on JNU student leader Umar Khalid

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association condemned the attack on the varsity's student leader Umar Khalid. An unidentified man targeted the JNU student leader outside the Constitution Club here and gunshots were heard, but he escaped unhurt, according to witnesses even as the police asserted it will verify the incident. Odisha Governor Prof Ganeshi Lal today released the Odia edition of "Exam Warriors", a book written by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on how to tackle examination woes. In his address, Lal said a common student can be a superman with his strong determination and will power. Two held for sharing doctored video on WhatsApp group

A government school teacher and a college student were arrested in the adjoining Rajauri district near here for sharing and circulating a sensitive WhatsApp post with potential to create law and order problem. Teacher Anwar Hussain of Ladhote Government School in Rajouri and local college student Shokat Ali were arrested for sharing and circulating a highly sensitive video on their WhatsApp group 'Daily News & Notification, said a senior police official, adding that the teacher was the group administrator. The police launched the crackdown, taking a stern view of the doctored video, shared by Ali, a 3rd semester student of Government P G College, Rajauri, the official said. The police registered an FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act and arrested the duo, who have been sent to Dhangri District Jail under judicial custody, the official said. Udhampur govt college to get pink toilet under SBA

The Government College for Women, Udhampur district, will soon become the first public space in Jammu and Kashmir to have a pink toilet. The foundation stone for the new concept washroom was laid today by district development commissioner Ravinder Kumar, an official spokesman said. He said the first-of-its-kind facility will be constructed by the rural development department under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. During an interaction with students, Kumar said the pink toilet is a rare facility for girls in the country.

Parents of students demand action against Dalit cook

Parents of a section of students of a school mirred in a controversy over posting of a woman Dalit cook today petitioned the Tirupur District Collector seeking action against her for 'negligence' which they alleged led to food poisoning of 12 wards recently. The parents who came to the Collectorate along with their wards raised slogans against Pappal, who cooks the noon meal at the school, and demanded action against her, police said. The parents submitted a memorandum, seeking an inquiry by the education department into the incident, which had occurred a day after the husband of Pappal sought police protection to his family. Twelve of the 31 students of the government high school in Thirumalaigoundenpalyam had complained of nausea and vomiting after eating noon meal on August 7 and were hospitalised. It was alleged that a dead lizard was found in the food and based on a complaint by headmistress Sasikala, police had registered a case against the cook under IPC section .

Rains: New books,special classes to help kids in relief camps

The monsoon fury over the past few days have compounded the worry of children housed in relief camps in the state with their text books and study material washed away in the heavy rains and the first term exams looming large. Microsoft, CBSE conduct pilot digital encryption of question papers for class 10th

Tech giant Microsoft today said it has partnered with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) to run a pilot to digitally encrypt question papers for class 10th compartmental examinations, aimed at enhancing security and seamless distribution of the papers. The solution was successfully tested as a pilot project in the recently held Class 10th compartmental examinations across 487 centres with about 4,000 students, Microsoft said in a statement. It added that the Controller of Examination could track the entire process using a software solution built on Windows 10 and Office 365 and that the technology was deployed by CBSE without a security breach. The overall process was automated to be highly secure with encryption, two-factor authentication and access to download the exam papers at the examination centre was given only 30 minutes prior to the start time, the statement explained. China to UN panel: no arbitrary detention in Uighur region

China is insisting that there is no "arbitrary detention" and there are no "re-education centres" in the Xinjiang region after a UN human rights committee raised concern over reported mass detentions of ethnic Uighurs. Beijing responded today to questions raised by the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. A committee member cited estimates that over a million people from Muslim minorities are held in "counter-extremism centres" and another 2 million have been forced into "re-education camps." Student loses portion of finger, 3-member panel to probe alleged negligence

A class 6 student of Delhi's prestigious St Columbus School lost a portion of his right hand's ring finger when it got stuck in a door, following which his parents accused school authorities of negligence. The school administration formed a three-member fact finding committee today to probe the issue after a group of parents staged protest outside the school premises. "I got a call from the school on Friday that there is a cut on my son's hand and he needs to be taken to the hospital. Neither the school officials made any effort to rush him to get medical aid nor I was informed that the injury was this fatal," the student's mother said. "When I took him to a hospital later, the doctor asked us for the lost portion of the finger. 'JNU better than other varsities when it comes to perception towards differently-abled students'

Jawaharlal Nehru University's differently-abled scholars feel the university is quite inclusive and even the perception towards them on campus is without any bias. Twenty-nine-year-old Ranjith Rebello, who was conferred his doctorate degree at the varsity's convocation on August 8, said JNU was much better than many universities in India and even abroad in its attitude towards the differently-abled students. Raj: Video of teacher beating student in classroom goes viral

A physical education teacher in Rajasthan's Dausa district was today put on awaited posting order after a video purportedly showing him beating a student in classroom surfaced on social media. In the video, the teacher, Jagmohan Meena, is seen repeatedly slapping the class 10 student of Swami Vivekanand Model School in Deedwana village. A complaint was filed against the teacher by family members of the student yesterday. An investigation has been initiated in the case, SHO, Lalsot police station, Rajendra Kumar said. He added the police was investigating what led the teacher to beat up the student. Additional district education officer Manisha Sharma said the accused teacher has been put on the awaited posting order (APO). ISRO plans to launch TV channel to promote scientific temper

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is planning to launch a TV channel to promote scientific temper among people and conduct training camps for school students. "ISRO will organise capacity building programmes for students from class 8 to 10 to inculcate scientific temper among them," ISRO chief K Sivan told reporters here today. The space agency will select students and organise training camps for 25 to 30 days, he said, adding during this period the students will be allowed to visit laboratory and make their small satellite. Many Delhi schools to start at 10 am tomorrow due to I-day rehearsals

Many schools in the city which are likely to be affected by police arrangements due to the full dress rehearsal of Independence Day celebrations tomorrow will start at 10 am to avoid any inconvenience to the students, a communication said. The Directorate of Education (DoE) issued the directive to schools following Delhi Traffic Police's recommendation in this regard.
