The Bihar government has made it mandatory for students and staff for schools run by it to hold morning prayers in which state songs be crooned using loudspeakers to instill discipline and punctuality among them. An order to this effect has been issued by Principal Secretary of Education Department R K Mahajan to all the District Education Officers (DEOs) and District Programme Officers (DPOs). The order issued on August 9 instructs to ensure holding of morning prayer with immediate effect in over 76,000 government schools and government aided ones. Mahajan told PTI that the purpose behind the exercise is to promote discipline and punctuality among the students and the staff in schools. "It has been decided to hold 'Chetna Satra/Prarthna Sabha' in every school (primary, middle and senior secondary) of the state using loudspeakers for qualitative running of the schools," the letter issued by Mahajan said. Three students were drowned in the Jyonha waterfalls in Ranchi district while taking bath, the police said. The students went to Jyonha waterfalls for picnic. They went for a bath and drowned, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Ajit Peter Dungdung said. One student was saved from drowning by the villagers, he said. The identities of the students were yet to be established, the SP said. The SP said all the bodies were recovered from Jyonha waterfalls, situated under Angara police station.
The Ravenshaw University authorities here today suspended a final year BBA student for four semesters on disciplinary grounds. This decision of the authorities came following an adverse report submitted by the University Disciplinary Committee against the student who was charged with indiscipline in the campus. "The student has been debarred from entering the hostel and university campus till June 2020," university Registrar Maheswar Agasti said. The Disciplinary Committee was asked to probe and submit a report on the fracas that took place in the Lalitgiri Hostel of the university in May and the student was found guilty by the panel, Agasti said.

No university in the country has established Mahatma Gandhi chair despite the nod from the University Grants Commission (UGC), according to HRD Ministry officials. In order to enrich the academic resources of the university system, the UGC has formulated a scheme for establishment of chairs in universities in the name of nobel laureates, illustrious persons and persons of eminence in areas of their outstanding contributions. "Mahatma Gandhi chair is one of the chairs approved by the UGC in the subjects or areas of peace and non-violence, freedom movement and national integration. However, Mahatma Gandhi chair has not been established in any university and no proposal was received by UGC from any varsity in this regard," a senior HRD Ministry official said. The Madras High Court today pulled up the CBSE for not issuing a circular to all affiliated schools to implement the court's recent order banning homework for students of classes I and II. "The Central Board of Secondary Education has not understood the seriousness of this case and the directions issued by the court. CBSE authorities think they are like CBI but that's not so," Justice N Kirubakaran said. He said the CBSE secretary should appear in the court if the circular was not issued by August 17. The court also directed the appearance of education secretaries of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry if they failed to respond to a circular issued by the central government in connection with the no homework rule by that date. The Delhi High Court today pulled up the AAP government for not admitting in schools the students who have not scored a minimum of 55 per cent in their class 10 exams conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS). Justice Siddharth Mridul was of the view that the Delhi government ought not to adopt a policy of exclusion in the matter of admissions in Delhi government schools. The Gujarat Government today announced various schemes for students and young entrepreneurs from economically backward sections of general category communities who do not get benefit of reservations. The announcement comes ahead of Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel's proposed hunger strike from August 25. To qualify for 'economically backward' category, the person's family income should not exceed Rs 3 lakh per annum. The schemes were devised by the Gujarat Unreserved Educational and Economical Development Corporation (GUEEDC), set up by the BJP government in the state this year in the wake of Patidar quota agitation. The Arunachal Pradesh cabinet today decided to close down all schools running without students by the end of this month after proper verification, an official release said here. The number of such schools would be known only after completion of the verification, sources in the Chief Minister's Office said. The cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pema Khandu also decided to send teachers from those schools to other schools running with deficit teachers. The release said the cabinet took serious note of reported out-of-turn promotions in the education department and approved immediate revocation of all such promotions. The cabinet also okayed the proposal of the District Re-organisation Bill, 2018 for creation of three new districts - Lepa Rada, Pakke-Kesang and Shi-Yomi. The bill would be introduced in the forthcoming assembly session from August 27, the release said.
