Hry to create awareness among students about cyber security

The Haryana government has decided to create awareness about cyber security among students from Class 5 to Class 12 in the state's government and private schools, a minister said today. Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said the electronics and information technology department has prepared some tips for students on how to safely use the internet. Internet has become an important part of a student's life. They use it for their studies and to get other information, he said, adding that the programme will make them aware about cyber threats. The minister said contents have been designed considering various age groups of students. He said district education offices and district elementary education officers have been directed to put up the contents on notice boards or inform students about this during school hours. MoU inked to extend health programme services to Tribal Affairs Ministry-supported schools

The Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have signed an MoU to extend the services of the health programme to MoTA-supported schools, an official statement said today. As part of the agreement, training will be provided to teachers of all Eklavya Model Residential Schools (EMRS), ashram schools and other schools supported by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs (MoTA). EMRS have been set up in states and Union territories to provide quality middle and high level education to Scheduled Tribe students in remote areas. The MoU covers activities including "extending all aspects of the school health programme, that is providing weekly iron and folic acid supplementation, biannual deworming, basic first aid and health promotion activities through teachers designated as health and wellness ambassadors in all EMRS, ashram schools and other schools supported by MoTA in the states". HC ask Centre and Delhi govt to decide on unsafe condition of 99-yr-old school building

The Delhi High Court today left it to the Centre and the Delhi government to demolish and re-construct a government school's 99-year-old building which is "dilapidated and unsafe" for children. A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice C Hari Shankar expressed satisfaction over a report filed by the Delhi government's Directorate of Education (DoE) in which it proposed that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) should construct a new building on the land to run an aided school or it may hand over the complete possession of the land to the department for construction of a new school building. The court directed the MoD and DoE to workout the issue between themselves and submit a status report, and listed the matter for October 26. Varsity declines request for Rahul's visit on security grounds

Citing security concerns, Osmania University today declined permission for Congress chief Rahul Gandhi's proposed meeting with students on its campus during his visit to the state on August 13 and 14. University Registrar Ch Gopal Reddy said they declined permission as they had no mechanism to provide security to the congress leader. However, they might review the decision if local police or any other government agency such as the special protection group (SPG) assures the university of Gandhi's security, he said. Angry parents protest outside NDMC school where girl was raped

Parents today staged a protest outside a NDMC-run school, where a six-year-old girl was allegedly raped, and demanded security in its premises and a ban on entry of outsiders. Even if outsiders are allowed, their identity documents must be checked, the parents said. NDMC school says adequate security on campus, accused not staffer; claims disputed

Girl dies after being given iron-boosting pills in BMC school

A girl student of a civic body-run school here died today while over 160 other students were hospitalised due to suspected poisoning after they took iron-boosting medicines given by the school. The 12-year-old girl was administered iron and folic acid tablets on Monday at the Municipal Urdu School Number 2 at Bainganwadi in suburban Govandi, a statement from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)said. It added that she skipped school on Tuesday but attended classes on Wednesday and yesterday and died at her home last night after a "history of vomiting blood". The statement said the students of BMC-run schools were given iron, folic acid and deworming tablets as part of a Central government scheme aimed at fighting anaemia among children. 2 teachers arrested for teasing girl students in Jammu

Two teachers have been arrested for allegedly teasing and abusing girl students at a private pre-nursery school in Trikuta Nagar area of the city, police said today. Based on complaints filed by the victims' family, the police registered cases under section 354 of Ranbir Penal Code (assault or criminal force to women with intent to outrage her modesty) against three teachers of the primary school on Tuesday. Two of the accused were arrested on Wednesday, however the third accused was at large, officials. Hopeful of early solution in Presidency varsity impasse: Guv

West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi today said he was hopeful of an "early solution" to the Presidency University impasse over hostel allotment as the state education department and Vice-Chancellor Anuradha Lohia are "looking into the matter". Over 50 students of the university launched an indefinite-sit last Friday to protest against the delay in completion of renovation work at Eden Hindu hostel, adjacent to the institute campus. The agitators have demanded that they be allotted rooms in two blocks of the heritage hostel, where the repair work was nearing completion. The authorities, however, said it will take another four to five months to make the hostel "habitable and safe for the students". "The issue is being looked into by the Higher Education department and the VC. I hope they will be able to solve the matter soon," Tripathi told reporters on the sidelines of a programme in the city. Student of class two raped in Delhi school

A class two student of a New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) school in the upscale Gole Market area here was allegedly raped by an electrician in the institute's premises, police said today. The girl was leaving school on Wednesday when the accused, Ram Asre (37) allegedly took her to a pump room in the school premises and forced himself on her, they said. He also threatened the girl with dire consequences if she told anyone about it, the police said. Upon reaching home, the girl's mother found her bleeding from private parts and took her to a hospital where the doctors informed them that she had been sexually assaulted. Nationwide probe after Tokyo med school excludes women

Japan today launched an unprecedented probe into gender discrimination at all the nation's medical universities after a Tokyo medical school admitted altering the entrance test results of female applicants to exclude them. The education ministry has asked all 81 private and public medical schools to check their admission procedures for possible discrimination against female applicants. SIO announces nationwide campaign

Alleging colonisation of education and curtailing of rights of students from marginalised community, a students body today announced the launch of a nationwide campaign to raise their demands.
