JNU makes attendance compulsory for teachers

The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has made attendance mandatory for teachers.The decision was taken at the university's 146th Academic Council meeting on Friday."While JNU had already implemented the rules of attendance for students and administrative staff, the 146th AC meeting through its resolution has made attendance mandatory for the teaching community as well, JNU faculty need to give attendance at least once in a day," JNU rector-1 Chintamani Mahapatra said in a statement.The university, during the meeting, took a series of decisions on various issues that would "bring about major improvements in academic and research activities of the university."At the AC meeting, it was also decided that entrance examinations to JNU will go completely online from next session in order to ensure "fair and bias-free" examinations."An important decision has been taken by the AC to make JNU Entrance Examinations completely computer-based, i.e. online mode. Demand for hostel accommodation: CMCH senior students' fast enters day 4

Six senior students of the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital were on an indefinite fast for the fourth day today demanding accommodation in the new hostel which is allotted only for first year students. One of the fasting students fell ill but continued his fast and was under observation and his condition was stable, Sayan Roy, a third year student said. The fasting students belonged to second, third and fourth year. Principal Ucchal Bhadra said a meeting was convened among the Principal, the students and the hospital administration to sort out the issue today but there was no breakthrough. JNU academic council approves computer-based entrance exams for all courses

The Jawaharlal Nehru University Academic Council today approved making the entrance examinations to the varsity completely computer-based, amid opposition from a section of teachers who raised apprehensions that it won't be "financially viable" and suitable for many courses. This was the first academic council meeting where the members of the JNU Students' Union were not present since they were not invited due to an ongoing inquiry against them for an alleged act of indiscipline in the last Academic Council (AC) meeting. The AC also took a "student-friendly decision" by making it mandatory for all teachers to show the corrected answer scripts of all exams ( sessional, mid-semester, end semester) to the students before finalising the grades, the statement said. School principal and son found dead at home

The bodies of a principal of a school and her 10-year-old son were found from their home here today, police said. Ranchi Superintendent of Police Aman Kumar said that the body of the 50-year-old principal, Arati Devi, and her 10-year-old son were recovered from their residence at Doctors Colony at Bariatu in Ranchi city. Her husband passed away last year following heart attack. The police said that her husband had a school at Hill View Road and Devi was the principal of that school. The police have sent the bodies for post mortem and investigation is on, the police said.

Counselling fee hike: Protests continue at Presidency Univ

Presidency University students union members have been continuing with a sit-in at the campus since yesterday to protest against an "bnormal hike" in counselling fee to courses in BA and B Sc streams. "The sit-in was held outside the offices of the registrar, Deans of different faculty to protest against the authorities' decision to charge Rs 500 instead of the earlier fee of Rs 100 as counselling fee," Ayan Chakraborty a spokesman of the SFI, the student wing of the CPI(M), said. Members of Independent Consolidation, another students' organisation, was also taking part in the agitation. NCPCR recommends 10-pc yearly cap on fee hike in private, unaided schools

The NCPCR has recommended to the HRD Ministry to put a 10-per cent yearly cap on fee hike in private, unaided schools, an official with the child rights body said today. Priyank Kanungo, a member of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said the body came up with a framework of recommendations after they received reports that children were being harassed by school administrations and that they considered committing suicide over the fee hike issue. "We have made the recommendations to the HRD Ministry and has proposed the setting up of a district fee regulatory authority in states to monitor school fee increases," he said. Kanungo said they have been receiving numerous complaints of mental and emotional harassment of children due to fee-related disputes between parents and school administrations, following which the body has come up with a model fee regulatory framework for unaided private schools. School toilets to be cleaned in three districts: Minister

Toilets in all schools in the districts of Erode, Coimbatore and Tirupur would be cleaned, keeping in mind the health and hygiene of the students, Tamil Nadu Minister A Sengottaiyan said today. The first phase of the toilet-cleaning project, sponsored by the Rotary Club International, would take off in September, Education Minister said while inaugurating 'smart classes' at a government higher secondary school here. Under the project, the club has granted 1,000 vehicles which would go to every government, municipal and panchayat school, clean the toilets and septic tanks, he said. In the first phase, toilets in 20,000 schools would be cleaned and it would be implemented in other districts on phased manner. HC seeks Centre, Cantt Board response on deplorable condition of govt school

The Delhi High Court today sought the response of the Centre, the Delhi government and the Delhi Cantonment Board after going through photographs showing deplorable condition of a government school, built on the land belonging to the Ministry of Defence, and lacking adequate infrastructure and teachers. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said though the Delhi Cantonment Board, in another matter, has recently submitted an affidavit that all the government buildings in its area are disabled friendly, the photographs showed that the school was not at all disabled friendly. Haryana govt decides to increase salary of guest teachers

The Haryana government has decided to increase salary of serving guest teachers by 20 to 25 per cent, an official spokesman said today. Besides, the government has also decided to raise their salary twice a year in the month of January and July equivalent to cost of living index, he said. Now the guest teachers serving as JBT/Drawing teacher, master or school lecturer would get Rs 26,000, Rs 30,000 and Rs 36,000, respectively from July 1, 2018, the spokesman said. The decision was taken in a meeting held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar with the unions of the guest teachers today. Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma was also present in the meeting. The students and faculty members of Manipur University, who had been observing a strike over the past 44 days, today sought details of the extortion letter that was apparently sent to Vice Chancellor (VC) Abya Prasad Pandey by an "underground" group. Chief Minister N Biren Singh, during a press meet yesterday, said Pandey had received a letter, demanding Rs 5 crore. He, however, did not disclose the date of receipt of the letter. Govt school painted to resemble train to attract students

In a bid to check migration of children to private schools, authorities of a government school in a remote village of Mysuru has painted it to look like a train to attract students. The school is located in Nanjangud Taluk. "Government schools are shutting down these days because children are going to private schools. The same was happening with our school too. This made us think why not we paint the school to make it look differently," Block Education Officer of the school M Narayana told PTI. Revenue officials conduct GST training for budding lawyers

To groom and enhance students' professional skills in helping small businesses file GST returns, officials from the Kolkata North CGST and CX Commissionerate in association with the CII conducted an outreach programme at the NUJS campus here today.
