No Central University was awarded the Visitor's Award by the President this year, a first since its inception in 2014, and going by the reply from the President's office, it is safe to surmise that the award will not be conferred in coming years as well.

Govt duty to protect interest of parents, says Kejriwal after asking Delhi school to rollback fee hike

It is the government's duty to protect the interest of parents and ensure that schools remain financially viable, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said today, a day after he ordered action against a school which increased the fees in the name of implementing the 7th pay commission. "First govt in history which has stopped pvt schools from hiking fee illegitimately n also forced some schools to rfund illegitimate fee hike. 120 children fall ill after consuming food at school hostel

Altogether 120 children had fallen ill due to food poisoning at a government-run school in Bihar's Lakhisarai district, police said today. The students at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, in Barahaiya area of the district, complained of nausea and stomach ache last evening after consuming dinner at the school hostel, Superintendent of Police Kartikeya Sharma said. Many also vomited multiple times, following which they were rushed to a local hospital by school authorities, the SP said. "The students were served rice and paneer curry for dinner. Soon after taking their food, they started feeling uneasy and sick. Of the 120 affected students, 70 were taken to Barahaiya-based referral hospital," he explained. The doctors attending to the children said they were out of danger, Sharma said, adding that 20 students, who complained of discomfort even after treatment at Barahaiya hospital, were admitted to Sadar hospital as a "precautionary measure". Presidency students demonstrate against counselling fee hike

Presidency University students union members today held a sit-in at the campus today in protest against what they describe as "abnormal hike" in counselling fee to courses in BA and BSc streams. The demonstration was held outside the offices of the vice-chancellor, registrar and senior officials to protest against the authorities' decision to charge Rs 500 instead of the earlier fee of Rs 100 as counselling fee, a spokesman of the SFI, the student wing of the CPI(M), said. Members of Independent Consolidation, another students' organisation, also took part in the agitation. Action sought against 10 Puducherry medical colleges for flouting admission norms

The Madras High Court has issued notice to the authorities concerned on a PIL seeking a direction to 10 medical colleges and deemed universities in Puducherry to surrender 883 MBBS seats in lieu of those filled by them allegedly flouting norms in the previous two academic years. The public interest litigation also sought penal action against the institutions. Underground group has demanded Rs 5 cr from Manipur Univ VC: CM

Chief Minister N Biren Singh today said an underground group has demanded Rs 5 crore from Manipur University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Adya Prasad Pandey even as the agitation by students and teachers, demanding the VC's removal, entered its 43rd day. Singh told reporters here that the state government had a copy of the extortion letter sent by the underground group to Pandey, demanding Rs 5 crore from him. Kejriwal directs Delhi govt to take stern action against school for increasing fees inappropriately

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has directed the Delhi government to take stern action against a school that increased its fees in the name of implementation of 7th pay commission. Bal Bharti Public School increased 10 per cent fee for academic session 2017-18, over the previous academic session 2016-17. The Directorate of Education (DoE) has been directed to take stern action against the school, according to a government statement. The school will communicate to the parents through website, notice board and circular about rejection of fee increase proposal of the school by the DoE. The school will pay salaries and allowances to the teachers and staff from its savings, it said. Based on analysis of financial statements of school, fund availability of the school has been assessed. The school is also having a surplus of fund of Rs. 11,08,35,825, it said. Centre supports Bihar govt stand on contractual teachers

The Centre today supported Bihar government's stand in opposing 'equal pay for equal work' for contractual teachers in the state, appointed under a 2006 law, saying they were not equal to those appointed before the law was enacted. The Centre, in its affidavit filed before a bench of Justices A M Sapre and U U Lalit, said, "the state government has tried to create a balance between the larger public interest and the claim of pay parity between the previous state government teachers and Panchayat teachers". It contended that "there cannot be a claim of parity between a dying cadre and a permanent alive cadre when the state has taken a conscious decision to adopt new service condition rules for newly-appointed panchayati raj teachers." No counselling of candidates before publication of merit list: Calcutta HC

The Calcutta High Court today directed the West Bengal School Service Commission (SSC) not to proceed with the counselling of candidates for recruitment as teachers for class XI and XII till a merit list was published. The SSC had issued a notification on July 6 stating that counselling would commence from July 16, without publishing the merit list of successful candidates, petitioners Biswajit Pal and 22 others claimed. Hearing the petition filed by the examinees, Justice Shekhar Bobby Saraf directed the SSC not to go ahead with the process before publishing the merit list of successful candidates in the recruitment examination held in December 2016. The counsel for the SSC could not produce any document to show that it had published the list of successful candidates. Petitioners' lawyer Ashish Chowdhury told the court that SSC appointment rules stated that candidates could be called for counselling only after publication of the list of successful candidates. 3 school boys thrashed by teachers for 'scratches' on car

Three Class VII students were allegedly beaten up with sticks and belt and locked in a room for about three hours by two teachers of their school in Chhattisgarh's Koriya district over a minor issue, police said today. According to police, the teachers were apparently angry as the car belonging to one of them suffered scratches and its number plate got damaged when the students were playing on the campus of their residential school. The incident took place yesterday in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (government residential school) in Baikunthpur town of the district. "A case has been registered against the teachers- B P Gupta and Jiyut Kumar Chakraborty- based on a complaint filed by the school's acting principal late last evening," station house officer (SHO) of Kotwali police station R K Anant said.
