Classes covering the ambitious "happiness curriculum", introduced by the Delhi government for the students of nursery up to the 8th standard in its schools, will begin from next week, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said today. An estimated 9-10 lakh students of the Delhi government schools will be taught in these classes. The government was also in talks with the municipal corporations that ran primary schools in the city for conducting these classes, Sisodia said at an orientation programme for teachers here. "The classes covering the happiness curriculum will begin next week. We are also talking to the municipal corporations. If the students of the corporation schools are added, the number of children to be covered under the happiness curriculum will go up to 15-16 lakh," he told reporters later. Maharashtra Education Minister Vinod Tawde on Thursday clarified that it was Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, which intended to distribute Bhagwad Gita in colleges and not the state government.This came hours after it was reported that the Directorate of Higher Education has decided to distribute Bhagwad Gita in Maharashtra colleges.Twade further said if someone wants to distribute the Quran or the Bible, the government will facilitate them as well."Government is not distributing Bhagwad Gita. Puducherry government today signed an MoU with Bengaluru-based Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide 'nutritious and hygienic' food under the mid-day meal scheme in the Union Territory. Secretary to Education A Anbarasu and the vice-chairman of the foundation Chanchalapathi Dasa signed the Memorandum of Understanding here in the presence of Chief Minister V Narayanasamy and Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan, a release said. The foundation, involved in preparation and supply of mid-day meal for students in different parts of the country for the past 17 years, would operate the scheme in Puducherry from June next year and cover 50,000 students of 300 schools. It would modernise the central kitchen of the Department of Education here at a cost of Rs 13 crore, the release said. Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan told reporters that the territorial government had been implementing the mid-day meal scheme for years, covering students from pre-primary level to Class XII.
West Bengal Governor K N Tripathi today said he had "nothing to say" about the decision of Jadavpur University to reintroduce entrance tests in the Arts faculty, and said the varsity's executive council was within its rights to lay down admission norms. "The admission committee has been formed by the EC, it has laid down certain norms to conduct admission tests (to six humanities streams). A seven-year old boy who found a bundle of Rs 5O0 notes totalling Rs 50,000, while playing in front of his school, has come in for praise from the local police after he handed it over to them. Mohammaed Yasin, studying in the second standard at the Chinnasemur Panchayat Union School, near here, found the money during the school interval around 11 am yesterday, and gave it to his teacher. She took the boy with the bundle to the headmaster, who took Yasin with the cash and handed it over to the superintendent of police Sakthi Ganesh. The official was all praise for the boy and arranged to buy garments for him as reward for his deed, police said. Ganesh said the boy would also be given a certificate for his honesty on July 19 during the district police officers meeting. Delhi University announced its fifth cut-off list for admission to undergraduate courses tonight. There has been a drop of 0.5-3 per cent in cut-offs across colleges. Around 50,000 students have taken admission in colleges of the university, with over 6,000 seats still lying vacant. Many colleges such as Hindu College, Hansraj College, Institute of Home Economics, Rajdhani College have closed admissions for general category students in many courses. Shri Ram College of Arts and Commerce has not issued a fifth cut-off list for admission for general category students for admission to its B.Com (Hons) and BA(Hons) Economics courses. The varsity threw open its admission portal for aspirants of various undergraduate courses on May 15. The registration for these courses ended on June 7.
