Govt warns of action if eligible students are charged excess

The Maharashtra Government today warned colleges of stringent action if they charged more than half the prescribed fees to the students whose family income is below Rs 8 lakh per annum. Under the Rajarshee Shahu Educational Fee Scholarship scheme, the government bears 50 per cent of the fee burden of these students by transferring the money directly to colleges. A government statement said that the Director of Technical Education has been instructed to take strict action against the institutes taking excess fee from such students. Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil said the government pays half the fees of students seeking admission to agriculture, medicine and 605 other professional courses under the scheme. But there were complaints that some colleges were still demanding full fees from the students whose parental income is less than Rs 8 lakh per annum, or denying admission if the full fee was not paid, he said.

HP govt to train youth to enhance their employability skills

The Himachal Pradesh government will impart training to 3180 youngsters during the current financial year to assist them in finding suitable jobs, a senior official said today. As part of the Himachal Pradesh Kaushal Vikas Nigam (HPKVN)-- a state government undertaking-- of the total candidates, 1440 were undergoing training in 37 centres in different streams, Principal Secretary (Technical Education and Industries) R D Dhiman said. Presiding over a review meeting of Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Yojana with Training Service Providers (TSP) here, Dhiman assured to strengthen HPKVN district teams for support to the TSPs and quality audits of training programme. He advocated a robust mobilisation strategy with the support of HPKVN district coordinators and forging linkages with industry to assess the demand of skilled manpower for sustainable placement opportunities. Online skill enhancement from digital platforms is an immediate need for all faculty, said Prof Saikat Mitra, Vice Chancellor, Moulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT). Prof Debashis Chatterjee assumes charge as Director of IIM-K

Prof Debashis Chatterjee today assumed charge as Director of the Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode (IIM-K) for the second term. IIM-K, which did not have a full time director for nearly four years after Prof Chatterjee completed his term from 2009 to 2014, is the first institute to appoint its own director autonomously after the President gave concurrence to the Indian Institute of Management Bill, 2017 on December 31. Maha to approach SC against HC order on minority college quota

The Maharashtra government will approach the Supreme Court against a Bombay High Court order to quash quota for students belonging to backward communities in minority degree colleges, state ministers Vinod Tawde and Rajkumar Badole have said. According to a circular the Mumbai University had issued over a decade-and-half ago, minority colleges were required to reserve seats for students belonging to OBC and SC and ST communities apart from the 50 per cent reserved for students from minority communities. The Bombay High Court had scrapped this circular in November last year. Several students' bodies, including the Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena, National Students' Union of India and others, had raised the issue before Tawde and Badole during a meeting held at the state secretariat yesterday. Javadekar assures students will not have to travel outside

Union Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javadekar today said students would not have to travel outside their state for appearing in NEET from next year as more centres would be set up based on the requirement. "Next year, students travelling to other parts of the country would not happen," he told reporters here. He was responding to questions on complaints about several students from Tamil Nadu being alloted centres outside the state for this year's national eligibility-cum-entrance test. The minister said this year the number of cities were increased to 150 from 107 in the previous years for the exam. "Now apart from those, any district which has more than 4,000 students will be made a centre. It will accommodate all students from that district and surrounding districts," he added. A New Jersey township high school has surprised a 92-year-old World War II veteran with the high school diploma he would have earned if he hadn't dropped out to join the Army. Vito Trause was presented with his "East Rutherford High School" diploma Wednesday, in a nod to Becton Regional High School's name during Trause's era. Over 11,000 admissions after DU's first cut off list, 6 times more than 2017

Over 11,000 students took admission in various colleges of the Delhi University after the first cut-off list, almost six times the number last year, an official said. The last day of the admission process for the first-cut-offs finished today. According to a university official, out of over 56,000 seats, over 11,000 were filled which was a record-breaking number. Last year, around 2,000 seats were filled. The top five colleges where students took admission were Hindu College, where 785 seats were filled, followed by Gargi College, where 674 seats were filled, Miranda House, where 628 seats were filled, Lady Shri Ram College, where 579 seats were filled, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh College where 575 seats were filled, according to data shared by the varsity. HC issues notice to MCI, JIPMER

The Madras High Court today issued notice to the Medical Council of India and Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research on a plea seeking a direction to the institute not to allot seats reserved for 'Puducherry Scheduled Community' (P-SC) to non-Puducherry SC students. Admitting the plea moved by A Sarandev, who was denied a seat in the institute, Justice K Kalayanasundaram directed the MCI and JIPMER to file their responses by June 26. According to the petitioner, JIPMER has reserved six seats in MBBS course under P-SC category and such seats are available only to persons belonging to scheduled caste students-Puducherry. Recently, the institute released its merit list for P-SC category in which the petitioner was ranked 10th. A scrutiny of the list revealed that students ranked 1,2,4,6,7 and 8 do not fall under P-SC category since their origin was not Puducherry, counsel for the petitioner Srinivasan said.
