The Haryana government has decided to remove the burden of school bags from primary school students, Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma said today. "We have decided that students would go to primary schools without bags," Sharma said in a statement. He said two schools in each block would be made English-speaking education institutions, starting from July 1. Sharma said 238 schools at the block-level would be made English-speaking. He said the number of English-speaking schools in the state has already reached 418.
Over 4,340 CCTV cameras are planned to be installed across 344 municipal-run schools in south Delhi to bolster the surveillance mechanism and build confidence among parents about safety of their wards, officials today said. Chairperson Standing Committee of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Shikha Rai in a statement issued by the SDMC said the project would cost over Rs 5.53 crore. "The SDMC is committed to provide foolproof security to its the students and ensure a reliable surveillance system to prevent incidents of any security lapse," she said. This would also help in allaying any fear in the minds of students as there have been some unfortunate incidents in a few schools in Delhi-NCR, the civic body said. The Delhi High Court today directed the Delhi University and St Stephen's College to permit a student, who has applied for admission under the sports quota, to provisionally participate in sports trials commencing from June 18. Justice C Hari Shankar also sought response of the university and the college on the petition and listed it for hearing on July 3. "Respondents (DU and college) are directed to permit the petitioner (student) to provisionally participate in trials commencing from June 18 in A-2 category. Participation of the petitioner in trial is entirely at her risk and shall remain subject to outcome of this petition," the court said. While the counsel for DU sought time to respond to the plea, no one appeared for the college despite advance service of the petition. Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling was today conferred with a Doctorate degree by a private university. About 96 per cent of young girls in India between the age group of 7 and 14 years expressed their desire to learn more about technology in schools, according to a survey of 200 participants. The survey was conducted by global digital payments platform PayPal, as part of a two-week annual initiative conducted across its tech centres in India. As many as 61 per cent of the girls surveyed said they pursue their interest in technology through active reading and workshops outside school as the existing curriculum does not cover enough. About 51 per cent of the participants also said that their mothers inspired them the most to pursue technology careers, followed by 34 per cent crediting their fathers while the rest (15 per cent) said their teachers inspired them the most. "The average gap in the availability of skilled talent in India has risen from six per cent in January 2014 to 12 per cent in January 2018 in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) sector," said Guru .

The Delhi University Teachers' Association today appealed to Delhi University vice-chancellor (V-C) to resolve all issues. The DUTA, in its general body (GB) meeting yesterday, had decided to continue its evaluation boycott, that it had begun last month. The association's GB has categorically demanded that the UGC's Roster Notification of March 5 must be put in abeyance to ensure that no working ad-hoc or temporary teacher is displaced in the new academic session, the appeal read. "The DUTA General Body noted with dismay that despite several representations and action programmes, there are no visible steps taken by your (V-C) office to resolve issues related to the counting of past services for promotions and absorption/regularisation of all ad-hoc and temporary teachers," the appeal said. Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani today launched the annual school enrolment drive from a tribal-dominated village in Sabarkantha district. This is the 16th edition of the state-government's annual school enrolment drive - Shala Praveshotsav - which aims to improve the school enrolment ratio in the state, an official release stated. The drive was started by Narendra Modi when he was chief minister of the state. On the first day of this statewide drive, Rupani was at Lambadia village of Sabarkantha district to welcome newly enrolled students of class 1. Anganwadi children, along with students of class 9 and class 11, were also enrolled during the function, said the official release. While speaking at the function, Rupani asked the locals, who are mostly tribals, to promise that they would send their children to schools. He added that the state government spends Rs 27,000 crore on education.
The Delhi High Court has directed the AIIMS to pay Rs 50,000 as costs to an MBBS aspirant, who was not allowed to write the entrance exam after his Aadhaar card could not be scanned at the centre, and also issued a slew of direction to avoid a repeat of the incident. The court observed that the controller of examination of AIIMS adopted a callous attitude in unnecessarily depriving the student from appearing in the exam. Turning back a student from an entrance examination centre would result in a fait accompli, as has happened in this case, which has to be avoided under all circumstances, it said. The court, however, refused to order a re-exam, saying it would cause a lot of disturbance to other students who have already appeared in the test and it would be unfair to impose the burden of another exam on the other candidates. The Himachal Pradesh Cabinet today decided to enhance the honorarium of part-time water carriers working on contract basis in the education department from Rs 1,900 to Rs 2,200 from April 1.
