It has been eight years since the Right To Education Act came into force, but if the mounting court cases filed under this historic legislation as revealed by a World Bank report are any indication, a large number of intended beneficiaries are still to draw benefit from it. According to the World Bank policy research paper, more than 40,000 cases have been filed in India under the RTE Act since 2010. The study - Using courts to realise education rights - said a majority of the cases relate to guaranteeing 25-per cent reservation in private schools for the poor. Other cases relate to private schools challenging the Act in terms of teacher eligibility, norms and recognitions. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) today announced results for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, with Panchkula boy Pranav Goyal bagging the first rank scoring 337 marks out of 360. The second position has been secured by Kota's Sahil Jain while Delhi's Kailash Gupta got the third spot. Kota's Meenal Parekh has emerged as topper among girls with 318 marks. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar urged the state universities to introduce new global standard courses based on skill education and digital technology to impart quality education to the youth. "Every university in the state should prove its excellence in at least one subject. By doing so, an identity of the state universities at national and international level would be established and Haryana can emerge as an ideal state in the field of higher education," he said. He further said that the state government has identified 29 more places where new colleges are required. After colleges are set up there, girls and the rural youth in Haryana would not have to go to towns for higher education.
A six-member oversight committee, set up to examine the recommendations of a 2014 panel that reviewed the Punjab School Education Board's history syllabus for classes 11 and 12, has suggested "replacing" the Class 12 history book in the next session. The committee has in its preliminary findings "rejected" the Class 12 history book of the state education board after spotting mistakes in it and has suggested using "the old history book" in this session, a committee member said. The committee has held two meetings. The next meeting will be convened on June 21 and it's there the "mistakes" found in the Class 12 history book will be placed before the board, he said. The maximum number of applicants out of over 2.70 lakh registrations for admission to Delhi University's undergraduate courses are from the national capital, according to the varsity's admission portal. Delhi is followed by Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Bihar and Rajasthan, the data showed. The least number of applicants are from Karnataka, followed by Chandigarh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, according to the figures shared by the varsity. Around 1,38,450 applicants are from Delhi, 76,042 from UP, 45,542 from Haryana, 16,838 from Bihar and 11,625 from Rajasthan for over 56,000 Delhi University seats, the portal showed. Only 364 applicants are from Karnataka, 557 from Chandigarh, 698 from Arunachal Pradesh, 784 from Gujarat and 801 from Tamil Nadu, the data stated. At a programme organised by representatives of the Namdhari community against drug addiction at Jivan Nagar in Sirsa, he said stern action will be taken against those involved in such illegal activities. Assam Governor Jagdish Mukhi has approved the report of the Common Pay Committee (CPC) 2017 for the non-teaching staff of seven universities in the state, an official release said today. The governor asked the university authorities to take up the matter with the Finance, Higher Education and departments concerned to disburse salaries and allowances of the non-teaching staff of the universities as per the recommendations of the CPC, it said. The seven universities are Gauhati University, Dibrugarh University, Assam Agricultural University, Bodoland University, Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, Cotton University and Kumar Bhaskar Varma Sanskrit and Ancient Studies University, it said.
The Madras High Court today directed the state CB-CID, probing the alleged sex scandal involving a woman assistant professor at a college in Virudhunagar district, to file its counter in two weeks. The first bench of Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Juctice P T Asha passed the interim order and posted the plea to July 2 for further hearing. On May 11, the High Court had passed the interim order restraining the circulation of the contents of retired IAS officer Santhanam committee report on the issue. The court ordered the government to keep the report in a sealed cover till further orders. The Delhi University today appealed to its teachers to end their evaluation boycott in the larger interest of the career of students. Reacting to the development, the Delhi University Teachers' Association said in a statement that instead of reminding teachers of their duties, the DU administration should enter into a genuine dialogue and take concrete, visible steps and give assurance towards resolution of issues which can be resolved at the university level. The DUTA had begun the evaluation boycott from May 9. Over two-and-a-half-lakh students registered for undergraduate courses in Delhi University (DU) on its admission portal this year, an increase from the last year. The DU threw open its admission portal for aspirants of various undergraduate courses (UG) on May 15. The registration for the UG programmes ended at 11.59 pm last night. The varsity has, for now, announced a total of five cut-offs with the notification for the first cut-off scheduled to be issued on June 19. Total male applicants were 1,44,248, female 1,34,297, and other applicants 29, he said. According to an official from the university, 2,78,544 aspirants made payments. Last year, around 2.20 lakh candidates had made payments, he added. The number of unreserved applicants stands at 1,75,719 and SC and ST applicants number 34,932 and 7,547 respectively.
Noting that Rs 25-35 lakh fee per annum for medical courses was "prima facie far too high", the Madras High Court today directed deemed universities in Tamil Nadu to collect Rs 13 lakh for MBBS courses as an interim measure, pending University Grants Commission's (UGC) fee fixation committee's decision. A bench comprising Chief Justice Indira Banerjee and Justice P T Asha gave the direction while disposing of a PIL by Jawaharlal Shanmugam, who submitted that these institutions were charging exorbitant tuition fees and gave details in a tabular column. "It appears to us that fees varying between Rs 25 lakh to Rs 35 lakh per annum is prima facie far too high and the fee committee constituted by UGC ought to make an in-depth study and recommend the fees to be collected by the institutions," the bench said in its order. It recorded an undertaking given by the UGC to constitute a committee by June 30 to fix the fee structure in these universities. Making it clear thatr there was a .
