Jitendra Singh felicitates successful students of 'Kashmir Super 30'

Union Minister Jitendra Singh today felicitated around 32 students of 'Kashmir Super 30' -- a coaching endeavour of the Army styled on Bihar's 'Super 30' to train students for the prestigious IIT-JEE examination. Total 50 students were enrolled under the project this year of which, 32 students qualified the JEE Mains Exam, 2017-18, a statement from the government said. Out of these successful students, seven students cracked the JEE Advance test and made it to the prestigious IITs, it said. These students were felicitated by Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State for Prime Minister's Office, at a function here. Addressing the gathering, the minister said the students have set an example for others to follow and appreciated them for their hard work and focused approach. Minor girl raped by three men in Odisha

A minor girl was allegedly raped by three men in Balasore district, police said today. The girl, a class 9 student was returning home alone after tuition yesterday evening when the three men allegedly raped her at Kasaba Jaypur village, they said. The girl informed her mother about the incident and the family lodged a case at the police station. The police have nabbed one of the three accused, who allegedly sexually assaulted the girl, a police officer said.

NITI announces 3,000 additional Atal Tinkering Labs

Government think tank NITI Aayog today said that its Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) has selected 3,000 additional schools for the establishment of Atal Tinkering Labs (ATLs), bringing the total number of ATL schools to 5,441. The selected schools shall receive a grant of Rs 20 lakh spread over the next five years to establish Atal Tinkering Labs for nurturing innovation and entrepreneurial spirit among secondary school children across India, NITI Aayog said in a statement. It further added that ATLs will soon be established in every district of India, seeking to enable an innovation ecosystem, which will facilitate transformational change in technological innovation and pedagogy. The AIM of the government's flagship initiative is to promote a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in the country.

English most sought-after subject in Delhi University

English is the most sought-after subject in Delhi University, according to the varsity. As many as 1,26,327 students have applied for the BA (Hons) English programme, followed by 1,05,818 students for BA (Programme), according to data shared by the varsity. BA (Hons) Political Science course saw 1,05,590 applicants, while BA (Hons) Economics had 96,709 applicants. The least number of applicants were for vocational courses -- 49,378 applicants for BA(Voc) Tourism Management, followed by 53,207 for BA (Voc) Human Resource Management. BA (Hons) Applied Psychology was the third least popular with 57,584 applicants. The varsity threw open its admission portal for aspirants of various undergraduate courses on May 15. The registration for these courses ended on June 7. The university has, for now, announced a total of five cut-off lists with the notification for the first cut-off scheduled to be issued on June 19. Parents feel maths toughest subject for kids, not taught well in schools: Survey

At least 89 per cent parents feel that Maths is the toughest subject for their kids and 77 per cent of them are of the opinion that the subject is not taught well in schools, thus making tuition classes mandatory, a new survey has revealed. The survey was conducted by Cuemath, a beyond-school, multi-format math learning program that brings together technology and personal teaching. On the basis of interviews of 1,000 parents from across the country, the survey stated that a child's performance in Mathematics was of utmost importance to 81 per cent of parents followed by their performance in Science. According to the survey, 82 per cent parents believe some children have a "natural flair" for Mathematics while it is difficult for others. Water damaged more answer-scripts than flames: varsity panel

Around nine per cent of the answer-scripts of the undergraduate B Sc degree course were gutted in the fire that broke out at the spot valuation centre of Osmania University here last week, the varsity said today. A committee, probing into the fire, said a 'meagre' nine per cent of the scripts of the87,000 BSc scripts (regular and backlog) kept in the coding room were damaged and remaining scripts partially damaged, a press release from the university said. The committee recommended holding the BSc examination in certain select subjects in the last week of June. Further, it suggested an overhaul of the infrastructure, security and safety measures at the spot valuation centre to prevent any such accidents in future. College expels students, sacks staffer over campus 'stripping'

The authorities at a reputed north Kolkata college has expelled two of its students and sacked a non-teaching staff member in connection with an alleged stripping incident on campus. The decision to dismiss the second-year students and the staffer was taken by St Paul's Cathedral College yesterday on the basis of report submitted by a seven-member committee that probed the incident, a spokesman said today. A first-year student, who claimed to be a member of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) unit of the college, had alleged that he was "stripped naked" and "filmed" on the premises on May 17. In the FIR, the student had named the two expelled students, the sacked non-teaching staff and another outsider. The video clip of the incident, which went viral on social media, showed the student pleading for mercy even as he was forced to remove clothes in front of a group of people. Rajasthan govt schools to hold lectures of 'Saints-Mahatmas'

The government schools in Rajasthan will hold lectures of Saints-Mahatmas' on every third Saturday of the month as an extra-curricular activity, the academic calendar of the School Education department said. As per the calendar released recently for the session 2018-19, the schools will hold 'Bal Sabhas' for five minutes on Saturdays. The calendar has fixed schedule of five Saturdays, including review of issues of national importance or lecture of any great personality or lecture of 'Saints-Mahatmas' on the third Saturday. The event can also be held apart from 'Bal Sabhas' during the zero hour after morning prayer, the calendar stated. The academic calendar for the year 2018-19 has been circulated to all the district education officers in the state by the director of the secondary education department to ensure the activities are implemented in all government schools. IMA launches awareness drive on sexual health

The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has launched a nationwide movement to eradicate the social taboo associated with sexual health. Dr Ravi Wankhedkar, the IMA national president, stressed the importance of the initiative and said that sex still being a taboo, doctors across India needed to break all the barriers and clinical inertias. This is the first-of-its-kind initiative launched by the IMA for over three-and-a-half lakh doctors to motivate them to dispel the taboo associated with this subject. No student would be denied higher secondary education: Ker CM

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today assured that no student in the state would be denied a chance to pursue higher secondary education due to shortage of seats for plus one course in government and aided schools. However, he admitted that there was some disparity in the availability of seats in the state, especially in Malabar (north Kerala) region, where there is a dearth of the same. "The governmentwould adopt a practical solution to address the problem," Vijayan said. The Chief Minister said this in the state Assembly when the Congress-led UDF opposition raised concerns about non-availability of sufficient seats in government and aided higher secondary schools in northern districts. Rajasthan: Sermons by saints to be part of schools' co-curricular activities

School students across Rajasthan will now have to listen to sermons of saints every month.A release from the Secondary Education Director, said that a session in the regard will be held on the third Saturday of every month.The release added that more activities will be held in addition to the children listening to the sermons of saints.On the first Saturday of the month, biographies of well-renowned persons will be read out to the students. On the second Saturday, stories on inspiration and moral values will be read out.Further, on fourth Saturday, a quiz programme will be held. On the fifth Saturday, plays on moral values will be enacted, while on the sixth Saturday, students will be made to sing patriotic songs.The release further stated that the above directions have to be made mandatory in all government, non-governmental, CBSE affiliated schools, residential schools, specialised training camps and teaching training schools.

Evaluation boycott: Don't jeopardise students' careers, ABVP asks DUTA

Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) here today demanded that the Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) withdraw their decision to boycott evaluation and not "jeopardise" the careers of students. Scores of activists of the RSS-affiliated students' organisation held a protest demonstration outside the Press Club of India (PCI), where as a press conference of DUTA was underway. The conference was attended by representatives of various political parties which supported the teachers' body. DUTA has been boycotting the evaluation for a month now to protest the new faculty reservation mechanism in universities and a host of other issues. Delhi University U-G admissions: Maximum applicants from CBSE

More than 85 per cent of applicants out of the over 2.70 lakh registrations for admission to Delhi University under-graduate courses are from the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), according to the varsity. As many as 2,49,694 applicants are from the CBSE, followed by 22,266 from the Uttar Pradesh board, 10,858 from the Board of School Education, Haryana, and 9,681 applicants from the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations for over 56,000 Delhi University seats, according to a data shared by the varsity. PIL in HC against GGSIPU affiliations to outside Delhi clgs

The Delhi High Court has sought response of the AAP government, University Grants Commission and Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University on a PIL challenging the affiliations given by the varsity to educational institutions outside the national capital territory. A bench of Acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Delhi government, UGC and GGSIPU, and asked for their stand on the plea moved by an NGO which has sought striking down of a provision in the Indraprastha Vishwavidyalaya Act, which allows the varsity to grant affiliations to institutions in other states. The court asked the city government, UGC and the varsity to file their affidavits before the next date of hearing on October 1.
