Health Ministry bars 82 medical colleges from admitting students in 2018-19

On the recommendation of the Medical Council of India (MCI), the Health Ministry has barred 82 medical colleges in the country to admit students for the academic session 2018-19. The MCI has pointed out various "deficiencies" in the colleges on the basis of its inspections of these medical institutes. It highlighted inadequate infrastructure, faculty and resources as some of the major reasons. "The medical colleges have been denied permissions to admit students for the academic session 2018-19 on the basis of the recommendations of the MCI which during its inspection to the colleges observed various deficiencies in terms of inadequate infrastructure, faculty and resources among others," a government official said. The order of banning 82 medical colleges, which includes 70 private and 12 government, means more than 10,000 MBBS seats out of the total 64,000 available will be blocked. Guv requests HRD to open Kendriya Vidyalas in border areas

Arunachal Pradesh Governor Brig (Retd) Dr B D Mishra has requested the Union Human Resources Development ministry for opening up of residential Kendriya Vidyalaya schools in few border districts of the state in conjunction with Navodaya Vidyalayas. The governor, who is presently in the national capital, called on Union HRD Minister Prakash Javedkar yesterday and emphasized on opening of such schools in remote areas and higher reaches of the border districts, a Raj Bhawan release said here today. "In addition to the help for our school going children, the people living in these areas will also be benefited by such schools in great measures. This initiative will also help in the development of the area, generation of employment and livelihood," he said. Govt, DMK spar over "delay" in mangalsutra assistance scheme

Principal opposition DMK and treasury benches today sparred in the Tamil Nadu Assembly over distribution of marriage assistance in the form of gold for mangalsutra, to women beneficiaries. DMK legislator P Seethapathy, participating in the debate on demand for grant to the social welfare department, alleged that there was delay in distribution of assistance under the "Thalikku Thangam," (gold for mangalsutra) scheme. Since AIADMK assumed power in 2011, the Tamil Nadu government is implementing the plan to help indigent parents conduct the marriage of their daughters, whereby a four gram gold coin was provided. From 2016, when AIADMK retained power, an eight gram gold coin was provided. The gold plan also includes a cash assistance of upto Rs 50,000 for eligible beneficiaries. Teacher arrested for sexually assaulting student

A teacher of a private school in Haryana's Nissing town was arrested today for allegedly sexually assaulting one of his students, police said. The 20-year-old student of SD Model School today lodged a complaint against her physical education teacher Manoj Kumar allegeding that he sexually assaulted her, they said. She alleged that Kumar assaulted her several times between January and March this year when she studying in Class XII, the police added. The victim passed out of school this year. The police said that the victim had attempted suicide last evening by jumping in a canal near Nissing, but was rescued by a passerby. An investigation is underway.

Maharashtra Congress chief Ashok Chavan today said his party will not contest the June 25 biennial polls to the Legislative Council, and support the candidates of "like-minded parties" instead. Raj govt to introduce scheme to provide milk to school students: Min

To improve health of school children, the Rajasthan government will introduce a scheme to provide milk to the students from class 1 to 8 from the new academic session, state School Education Minister Vasudev Devnani said. Milk will be supplied on alternate days in both the rural and urban areas under the 'Annapurna milk distribution scheme' from July 2. Milk will be provided to students of the urban areas on Monday, Wednesday and Friday while the students of the rural areas will get milk on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The scheme of supplementary milk distribution will enhance the health of students. The scheme will be implemented with a budget of Rs 218 crore, Devnani said. Nearly 64 lakh students will be benefitted and 5 lakh litre milk will be consumed, 150 ML milk will be served to class 1 to 5 and 200 ML milk will be given to students from classes 6-8 immediately after the morning assembly, he added. Over 85 pc students pass Madhyamik examination

An estimated 85.49 per cent candidates of over 11, 02,726 students passed in the class X board examinations of West Bengal this year, the state Board of Secondary Education said today. The pass percentage had a slight dip of .16 per cent - 85.49 per cent this year from 85.65 per cent last year, it said. Altogether 8,99,564 candidates passed the examinations. Sanjibani Debnath of the Suniti Academy, Coochbehar ranked first getting 689 marks followed by Sirshendu Saha of the Satgachia High School, East Burdwan who got 688 marks, as part of the merit list and results announced by the WBBSE president Kalyanmoy Ganguly here. The third spot was jointly held by three students - Mayurakshi Saha, Nilabjo Das and Mrinmoy Mondal all having got 687 marks. Saha was from a school in Coochbehar and the other two from a school in Jalpaiguri respectively. 96.13 per cent students passed from East Midnapore, the highest among all districts, the Board said. Answer sheets gutted in fire at Hyderabad's Osmania University

Several bundles of answer sheets of a degree exam were gutted in a fire that broke out at a spot valuation centre at the Osmania University in Hyderabad on Tuesday.The fire tenders reached the spot to prevent the flames from spreading to other rooms where more answer sheets were stored.The answer sheets of BSc (Botany) exam were kept in four rooms for valuation at the centre behind men's hostels in the university campus.According to fire officers an electrical short circuit could be one of the main causes for the fire.University Vice-Chancellor S Ramachandram also visited the valuation centre and took stock of the situation.The university in a press release said that officials swung into action and made concerted efforts to avert a major fire.Meanwhile, Kumar Molugaram, Controller of Examinations, Osmania University wrote a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Police (East Zone) asking him to 'investigate the matter'.

Pvt management institutes asked to give stress on placement

West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee today asked private management institutes to reduce the number of branches if they failed to secure jobs for students. "Those who are not being able to ensure placement of students, think about it - if you can reduce the four-five branches to one or two. Think about the creation of jobs and employability factor," Chatterjee said. Speaking at a meet organised by the Association of Professional Academic Institutions, Chatterjee said the employers should have confidence in the private institutes. "You have to build confidence. Jobs are there but every employer will ponder over the issue of return of investment," he said. The minister said the state government would not meddle in the running of private engineering institutes but the government has certain roles to play to keep tab on their activities and step in accordingly.
