Ghaziabad district magistrate orders unrecognised schools to be shut

The Ghaziabad District Magistrate has ordered all unrecognised schools in the district to be closed.Around 10,000 students studying in the Ghaziabad district will now be enrolled in recognised government schools by June this year.The district magistrate said that at least 5,000 students have been enrolled in council seasons.The measure has been taken to prevent the students' session being wasted.The Primary Education Department has issued a number of unrecognised schools running in the district. The Ghaziabad district administration has appealed to the parents to check the list before enrolling their child in any school.As per media reports, the district magistrate had earlier issued a notice to close 209 unrecognized schools in the district. At least 231 non-recognized schools were identified in the 2017-18 session. Student cannot appear for exams due to low attendance: Bombay HC

The Bombay High Court today said it cannot allow a homoeopathy student to appear for her first year repeat examinations as she was held ineligible by the college due to poor attendance. Fakeha Badami, in her petition filed earlier this week, claimed that her attendance was poor because the Sai Homoeopathic Medical College, located in Bhiwandi in the neighbouring Thane district, did not allow her to attend lectures as she wears the hijab. The college's lawyer, Sahil Salvi, refuted the allegations and said Badami, a resident of suburban Bandra, was held ineligible as she had low attendance. "The college is willing to let her appear for the second repeat exams, scheduled to be held in December this year, provided she attends all the repeat lectures that will be conducted till November," Salvi told a vacation bench of justices S J Kathawalla and A S Gadkari today. Woman teacher arrested for sexually exploiting boy

A 34-year-old woman school teacher has been arrested on charges of sexually exploiting a 15-year-old boy who used to visit her for tuition in Chandigarh, police said today. The woman, a science teacher, had been allegedly sexually exploiting him for the past two months, police said. The boy, a Class 10 student, lives in the same area as the teacher. "She was arrested yesterday on charges of sexually assaulting and exploiting the boy. She has been arrested under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO)," Sector 31 SHO Gurjit Kaur said. She was produced before the district court and sent to judicial custody. An NGO, which received a call about the matter, counselled the boy and he later disclosed that the teacher had been sexually assaulting him since March. Modi, Hasina arrives at Viswa Bharati University in Bengal

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina arrived at Viswa Bharati University this morning to attend the convocation ceremony. The PM arrived in his chopper at Panagarh in Bardhaman West district around 10am and left for the convocation venue soon after. He was greeted with a bouquet of flowers by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on his arrival. Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi and senior leaders of West Bengal BJP unit were also present at the helipad to welcome the PM. Both Modi and Hasina signed the visitors' book at the university before taking to the dais at the convocation venue. Earlier in the day, the university witnessed unruly scenes as youths were seen protesting outside the convocation venue over paucity of water, an official said. The youths alleged that some students fell sick as there were inadequate arrangements for water and other facilities at the venue. 25 bogus teachers booked in Mathura

Police have registered a case against 25 teachers for allegedly using fake education certificates to get employment. While an FIR was filed against 25 candidates for presenting bogus documents, show cause notices were issued to another nine erring candidates," Mukesh Agrawal, Principal at District Institute of Education and Training said. Their appointment of these teachers has also been cancelled, he said. He said that the police will now investigate the role of staff that had checked the certificates of the candidates. Agarwal did not rule out the involvement of staff of District Basic Shiksha Adhikari in the case.

Higher education institutions to award degrees for online courses

Higher Educational Institutions (HEI) can now offer certificate, diploma and degree programmes in full-fledged online mode, along with, as has been the norm, those offered in the regular mode, sunject to certain conditions, the government announced on Thursday.

Amarinder lashes out at Sukhbir for spreading 'lies' about SC students education

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh today lashed out at SAD Chief Sukhbir Badal for allegedly spreading "malicious lies" over free college education for students from Scheduled Castes. Amarinder said contrary to the SAD president's claims and allegations, his government had already disbursed Rs. 152 crore, post audit of 1,683 government and private institutes. Sukhbir's "falsehoods" had once again exposed the total lack of concern the Akalis had for the Dalits, who were not only deprived of their rightful dues under their rule but were subjected to all kinds of "victimization and harassment" at their hands, the chief minister said in a statement here. UGC approves regulations for online courses by universities

From this academic session, universities and higher educational institutions will be able to offer graduate, postgraduate and diploma programmes online, with the University Grants Commission (UGC) today approving regulations for such degrees. "In a landmark reform in the field of higher education, University Grants Commission has approved the UGC (Online Courses) Regulations. There was no such regulations earlier," Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar tweeted. "Today's decision will help top rated institutions to offer certificate, diploma & degree programmes in full-fledged online mode in only those disciplines in which it has already been offering the same or similar programmes or courses at graduation level in regular mode," he added. AMU urges HRD Ministry to roll back JNU's 'Islamic Terrorism' course

The Students' Union of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Thursday urged Union Minister for Human Resource Development Prakash Javadekar to ask Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) to roll back its proposed introduction of course on 'Islamic Terrorism'.President of the Students' Union, Maskoor Ahmad Usmani said in the letter that it is "disgusting and shocking" to see how JNU is giving "religious colour to terrorism.""It perhaps reflects their deep rooted agenda to malign a specific religion," he said.A course titled 'Islamic Terrorism' will only promote a disconcertingly convenient understanding. It will not urge the students to take a plunge into the inner folds of this complex phenomenon. DUTA protests outside UGC office against 'forced autonomy' to clgs

The Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) today protested outside the office of the University Grants Commission (UGC) here over reports of forced autonomy to DU colleges. DUTA president Rajib Ray said the Delhi University (DU)has its own statutory autonomy inscribed in its founding Delhi University Act, and any move that "violates its founding act, statutes and ordinances is legally tenable". "We held a demonstration outside the UGC office while its Full Commission Meeting was on. Senior UGC officials informed us this morning that the item on granting autonomy to St Stephen's and Hindu College has been dropped from the agenda of the meeting. "This deferral is, however, no guarantee against the Centre's plan to privatise the premier public-funded higher educational institutions," he said. Medical college director held on cheating charges

The director of a private medical college here has been arrested for allegedly cheating students. Ramesh Badlani (70), director of Modern Institute of Medical Sciences, was arrested by Delhi police from a hotel in the national capital yesterday, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Harinarayanachari Mishra told reporters here. He was brought here today. Badlani was absconding and police had announced a reward of Rs 20,000 for any information leading to his arrest. He is accused of collecting fees of upto Rs five lakh from more than fifty students for admission to medical and nursing courses at the institute, and discontinuing the classes later citing financial difficulties. The college staff too wasn't allegedly paid their salaries. The students who had taken admission to the institute held a protest last month, following which police registered a case under IPC sections 420 (cheating) and 406 (criminal breach of trust) against him. DU to translate and publish world classics into Hindi

In a first, the Delhi University will translate and publish world classics of foreign countries in Hindi language, the varsity announced today. The first-of-its-kind initiative, according to the university, was taken to widen students' understanding of global thought. "The initiative aims to strengthen bilateral, social and cultural ties further. This would make our citizens and students aware of these classics and would widen their understanding of global thought," Registrar Tarun Kumar Das said. Education was not a subject for politics and would not be poll plank for the 2019 elections, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar said here today. "Education is not a subject for politics..it will also not be a subject for 2019 elections. It is a subject of future generations and everybody must have an access to it," he said at an event. The minister was addressing a gathering at the launch of "Samagra Shiksha", an integrated scheme for school education from pre-school to senior secondary levels. DMRC terms Magenta Line as 'knowledge corridor'

The Delhi Metro's Magenta Line, covering the city's arterial Outer Ring Road, is touted as the 'knowledge corridor' as it connects four major universities of the National Capital Region. UNICEF launches data visualisation app

The UNICEF today launched a 'data visualisation app' which provides a user-friendly visual representation of complex analytics of the education scenario in the country. The app has been made with technical inputs from the UNICEF, in collaboration with the National Institute of Education Planning and Administration (NIEPA) and the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT). It uses the UDISE (Unified District Information System for Education), the NAS (National Assessment survey) and demographic data and can be used as a visual tool by policy makers, senior government officials, academia, and researchers to address gaps and monitor programs in the field of education.
