Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan turned career counsellor for students in Bhopal on Monday and gave them useful career tips.The Chief Minister encouraged the students to take up a career of their choice.Sharing his experience with more than 70 students here, the Chief Minister said, while he was interested in Philosophy, his parents wanted him to become a doctor."I made a choice and took up Philosophy from Bhopal University and also won a gold medal," Chouhan said.He also enlightened students on the three purposes of education. Texans turn to God as school rocked by latest shooting

Teach freedom struggle martyrs' biographies in schools:Rajnath

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh today said biographies of martyrs of freedom struggle should be taught in schools, which he believes would increase patriotism. "The biographies of martyrs of freedom struggle should be included in the school syllabus so that (coming) generations can draw an inspiration from their sacrifice. This will also foster patriotism," Singh said at a function after unveiling statue of freedom fighter Thakur Ranmat Singh at Koti near here. He said schools, panchayats and health centres should be named after martyrs hailing from respective areas. "India is the land of diversity and the dream of turning it into a powerful nation could be achieved through unity," Singh said. Gehlot exhorts Rajasthan govt to have more hostels for SC, ST students in education hubs

Union Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot today asked officials in Rajasthan to approach the Centre for opening hostels for students belonging to the SC/ST categories in districts emerging as education hub. Gehlot, the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, made the pitch while reviewing the implementation of various social welfare schemes in Rajasthan. He told the officers concerned in the state to forward proposals to the central government for opening hostels for students belonging to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) categories in districts which are emerging as educational hub, according to a state government release. "These hostels will help the students get more facilities along with the studies," Gehlot said, noting that Rajasthan has performed well as compared to other states in terms of construction of hostels for SC and ST students. Start-up educating people in urban slums using tech

A Delhi-based tech start-up has begun educating people belonging to marginalised sections living in urban areas by using modern technologies such as augmented reality and virtual reality. The start-up, VRARMR (Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality), has completed its month-long pilot project in Faridabad near here educating those living in slums by using gears such as VR headsets and other tools that gave them immersive experience. "In the pilot project, we told them short moral stories using virtual reality and they expressed immense interest in it. Most of them have not received even basic education, but education through this technology makes them immerse in the concepts being taught for easy and better understanding," founder-president of the start-up Divyanshu Varshney told PTI. More boys called up CBSE helpline to beat exam stress than girls

More boys called up the CBSE counselling helpline with stress-related queries during exams than girls, statistics have revealed. The Central Board of Secondary Education's (CBSE) annual outreach programme to help students beat exam stress begins in February every year and provides counselling to students till April. However, students continue calling the helpline even after results are announced and the counselling team tries to address their stress-related queries ranging from break-up issues, the parent-children argument to difficulty in memorising, nervousness and others As per official statistics, the helpline received nearly three times more calls from boys than from girls from February 1 to May 16. The board provided counselling to a total of 3467 callers this year of which only 74 were career related calls. Zoo announces summer training workshop

The National Zoological Park will open its gates for school students for a summer training workshop from May 22 to June 5. "The zoo hosts summer training programmes for school students every year. The aim of such an exercise is to educate them about animal protection. A slew of events have been planned for the 15-day programme at the zoo premises," zoo director Renu Singh said. The workshop is being held in collaboration with the National Museum of Natural History. Singh said the students would be taken to field visits and shown documentaries prepared by the Wildlife Institute of India (WWI). "Apart from this, the students will also participate in slogan writing and poster making competitions. We have formed two categories of 'Green Cubs' for students from 8 to 12 years, and 'Green Teens' from 13 to 15 years," she said. College students in India check smartphones over 150 times a day: Study

On an average, a college student in India checks his mobile phone over 150 times a day, according to a study conducted by Aligarh Muslim University and the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR). The research, titled "Smartphone Dependency, Hedonism and Purchase Behaviour: Implications for Digital India Initiatives", has been conducted in 20 central universities, where 200 students each were interviewed. "Anxiety and fear of missing out on information make university students check their mobile devices as many as 150 times a day on an average, an activity which can have adverse effects on the students' health as well as academics. "Only 26 per cent of the respondents said they use smartphones primarily to make calls. The remaining respondents use smartphones for other purposes such as accessing social networking sites, Google searches and for entertainment such as watching movies," said Mohammed Naved Khan, the Project Director. DU announces free preparatory classes for PG entrance exams for economically weaker students

The Delhi University has announced two weeks of free preparatory classes for post graduate entrance examinations for students from economically weaker sections and minority communities. The classes will be held for eight disciplines -- Commerce, Law, Journalism (Hindi and English), Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Computer Science and Zoology. "For the third consecutive year, the varsity is conducting such classes to help students clear entrance exam for various postgraduate programmes. The purpose is to prepare students for the academic approach to be adopted to clear the entrance," the varsity said in a statement. Tentative dates for commencement of the classes are June 1 for Commerce, Zoology, Law, Journalism (both languages), Chemistry and Physics. Teacher arrested for trying to rape girl student in JK's Doda

A government teacher has been arrested for allegedly trying to rape a 13-year-old girl in a school in Jammu and Kashmir's Doda district, the police said today. The 48-year-old teacher, S K Manhas, was arrested from his house at Khellani village last evening after the girl's parents filed a complaint, alleging that the accused tried to rape her, said Muneer Khan, the Station House Officer of the Bhaderwah police station. The complaint alleged that the teacher called the girl to the classroom during the morning assembly on the pretext of searching her bag for lipstick. He then bolted the door and tried to rape her, Khan said. The accused fled the government middle school after the girl reported the incident to its management and her parents.
