Haryana government has decided to start 31 government colleges for girls from July, said Education Minister Ram Bilas Sharma. The minister said this at an event here yesterday, adding that all the 31 colleges, till the time their construction is complete, would function from "vacant buildings of government schools or other organisations" starting July 2018. "Till the construction of college buildings gets completed, these colleges would run in vacant buildings of government schools or other organisations so that girls would not have to travel far places for education," Sharma said. Sharma further said that the government has been making concerted effort to promote education for girls in the state.
At least three Banaras Hindu University students were injured after two groups from the Birla and Lal Bahadur Shastri hostel clashed among each other during which stones and petrol bombs were also hurled, police said. The incident was fallout of a recent attack on a BA second year student, Ashutosh Maurya, who lives in Shastri hostel, by a group of students from the Birla hostel, with whom he had some enmity, they said. The clashes occurred shortly after midnight today, following the police force deployed in the campus was withdrawn, finding that the situation has improved, police said. The students pelted each other with stones and hurled petrol bombs, damaging vehicles and public property near their hostels in the university campus, they said. The police soon reached the campus on receiving information and had to face tough opposition from the students. As many as 450 students of Delhi University's Law Faculty will not be allowed to write exams due to attendance shortage, according to a notice issued by the varsity. The students detained (not allowed to appear in the exam) belongs to the Law Centre 1 and Law Centre 2 (Under the Faculty of Law) studying in various terms, the notice said. On the notice, All India Students Association's Delhi University president Kawalpreet Kaur, who is also a student of Law Faculty, said, "The attendance have been given in an arbitrary manner." In a relief for the students who fail to secure admission to MBBS in the first attempt and settle for some other course, the Gujarat government today said such students can get into the MBBS course if they get the required score in the 'second trial' of the NEET. The norms were changed to give a second chance to "bright students" who want to pursue MBBS but fail to do well in their first trial of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET), Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said. Several students can not secure admission to the MBBS course in the first trial for various reasons, such as a death in the family or illness at the time of NEET, he said. "As a result, such bright students have to settle for other streams, such as Homoeopathy or Ayurveda," he said. The Madras High Court today dismissed a PIL challenging the appointment of a committee by Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to inquire into the alleged attempt by a woman college teacher to lure students to extend sexual favours in return for higher marks. Justices S Govindaraj and G R Swaminathan of the Madurai Bench held that the governor has the powers as the chancellor (of state-run universities) to order such an inquiry. Dismissing a PIL seeking to declare as null and void the order of the governor appointing the committee headed by retired IAS officer R Santhanam, the bench said the court cannot interfere with the powers of the governor. The Delhi Cabinet today approved restructuring of the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and creation of two new District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs). Currently SCERT Delhi is led by a Director and Joint Director and has a sanctioned capacity of 44 academic faculty posts and 101 non-academic posts. "The Delhi Cabinet has decided to restructure the SCERT and set up two new DIETS in Shahdara and South-East Delhi," Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia told reporters after the Cabinet meeting. According to a Delhi government official, "After restructuring, SCERT Delhi will be led by Director (Academic) and Joint Director (Administration)". "SCERT will have a total of 12 administrative divisions with a total of 103 academic faculty, five post-doctoral fellows and 191 non-academic staff. Girls outshone boys in the results of class 10 and class 12 examinations announced today by the Chhattisgarh State Board of Education (CGBSE). The overall pass percentage of students of class 12 and class 10 stood at 77% and 68.04%, respectively. The results were announced by School Education Minister Kedar Kashyap in presence of senior officials of his department. This was for the first time that the results of both the board exams were declared on a same day. For class 12, the pass percentage for girls and boys stood at 79.40% and 74.45%, respectively, while for class 10 it stood at 69.44% for girls and 66.42% for boys. Out of 2,73,013 students who had registered for the CGBSEHigher Secondary School Certificate Examination(class 12), a total of 2,70,043 students, including1,31,234 boys and 1,38,809 girls, actually appeared for the exam. When the petition came up for hearing today, the court issued notice to the Tamil Nadu School Education Secretary and Director.
