Strong action against those involved in AMU campus violence: DM

The district administration today warned that strong action will taken against those involved in the AMU campus violence on May 2, when a row broke over a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah. "The magisterial probe which is currently being conducted has identified all those who indulged in hooliganism and violence in all the incidents which took place between May 2-8, Aligarh District Magistrate Chandra Bhushan Singh said. "Strong and exemplary action will be taken against those involved in the violence," he said in a statement. Singh said videographic evidence is helping the authorities identify those who played an active role in all incidents. AMU students clashed with the police on May 2 demanding action against right-wing protesters who had earlier entered the campus demanding the removal of the Pakistan founder's picture hanging on the walls of the student union office for decades. : Tamil scholar Arivoli died in a private hospital here today following a brief illness. He was 80, hospital officials said Born in Sikkal in Nagapattinam district, he had authored 120 books. He is survived by wife and two daughters. He worked as a professor in Anna University and Poompuhar College and was a debate moderator.

AMU VC meets Rajnath amid ongoing row over Jinnah portrait

Aligarh Muslim University Vice Chancellor Tariq Mansoor today met Home Minister Rajnath Singh to discuss issues concerning the premier academic institution, engulfed in controversy over a portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah on its premises, an official said. Singh assured Mansoor of all help from the Central government in restoring normalcy in the university, the official privy to the meeting said. Mansoor later told reporters that the meeting was fixed long ago and had nothing to do with the current controversy. "I have requested the home minister to send Central government officials for the recruitment of students in central services like the engineering service," he said. Punjab Board Class X results: Gurpreet Singh tops with 98%

The merit list for the class tenth examination of Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) was declared on Tuesday, with Ludhiana boy Gurpreet Singh topping the exams.A student of Shri Harikrishan Sahib School in Ludhiana, Gurpreet Singh secured 98 percent in the exams.Speaking to ANI, Singh said the results came as a surprise to him as he did not expect to bag the top spot."I am happy and quite surprised to know that I have topped the exams. Parents allege daughter injured due to school authorities negligence

The parents of a school girl have alleged that she sustained injuries in the school due to the negligence of the school authorities in southwest Delhi, the police said. The incident was reported to the police on April 24. The girl, a nursery student, fell down while playing in the school. Her parents in the police complaint alleged that it was due to the negligence of the school authorities that their daughter sustained severe injuries to her ears. Police said that they are yet to record the statement of the girl. No case has been registered in the matter yet, they added.

Goel visits Delhi govt school, announces Rs 25 lakh for its revamp

Union minister Vijay Goel today visited a Delhi government-run school in Mustafabad and announced a fund of Rs 25 lakh for its development. He said it is expected that the Delhi government will spend it to "change the face" of the school as it lacked facilities. The condition in which the students are studying, brought tears to my eyes, Goel said. "I am always happy to resolve matters of public interest," Goel said, announcing Rs 25 lakh from his MPLAD fund to revamp the school. He hit out at the AAP government for its "tall claims" of revolutionising the education sector in Delhi. "Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Education minister Manish Sisodia continue to make tall claims, but in reality the picture is quite grim," the union minister said. Tension simmers at AMU, student march foiled

Aligarh Muslim University students were stopped from marching to the district collectorate today as the Jinnah portrait row simmered despite a plea by the vice chancellor asking them to get back to their studies. Faculty members and university employees intervened to stop students from moving in a human chain from the Baab-e-Syed gate to the collectorate, demanding a judicial probe into the "police inaction" on May 2 when right-wing protesters had entered the campus. Tension prevailed on the campus for over two hours with the students announcing their plan to march to the collectorate and the police making it clear that they would not allow it. Punjab govt puts on hold release of Class 12 history book

The Punjab government has decided to put on hold the release of Class 12 history book till the newly-constituted oversight committee examined it and decided on the way forward, an official spokesperson said today. The spokesperson said here that following the chief minister's decision to set up the six-member oversight committee, headed by eminent historian Prof Kirpal Singh, it was felt that it would be better for the panel to undertake a review of the book before its further release. The Punjab School Education Board has also been directed to facilitate the committee for completing this task at the earliest. UK schools evacuated over bomb threat emails

The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) today launched an investigation after a number of schools across England received threatening emails warning of a bomb attack. West Midlands Police said the emails are believed to be "false and malicious" as schools across the country were advised to contact local police. "Police are aware of emails circulating to a number of schools in the West Midlands and nationally this morning (Tuesday May 8) making bomb threats at this stage it is believed they are false and malicious," a West Midlands Police spokesperson said. "Schools are some of the safest and most secure public spaces with well-rehearsed safety plans in place to deal with a range of emergencies. Staff are highly trained and the well-being of students is their top priority," the spokesperson added. 4 women hit by speeding car after police recruitment test

Four women candidates who had finished a police recruitment test in Mumbai today were injured after being hit by a speeding car. The women, aged around 20 years, were walking to the Vikhroli railway station after their test when they were knocked down by a speeding car, police said. They were rushed to the nearby Mahatma Phule municipal hospital, police said, adding that an investigation into the incident is underway. The injured women are identified as Kajal Karde, Deepali Kale, Chitrali Pange, and Chaitali Dorge, all from Pune district. They were students of a "police training academy" at Shirur and had appeared for the mandatory physical test of running. They were hit by the car at around 11 am on the Vikhroli eastern express highway, police said.

CBI arrests 3 for luring students into adopting unfair means in NEET

The CBI has arrested three persons for allegedly trying to secure seats for their candidates in medical colleges using unscrupulous means in the the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) held on May 6. Based on a complaint of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the CBI arrested Mohit Kumar of Uttar Pradesh's Khurja district, Manoj Kumar Sikka of Ludhiana, Punjab, and Ashwani Tomar of Akruti Education, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi. The CBSE alleged that the trio conspired with "unknown candidates" to get them seats in medical colleges using "illegal, unfair and unscrupulous means" in NEET-UG, "thereby depriving the deserving ones". "Searches were conducted on the residential and official premises of the accused in Delhi, Khurja and Ludhiana, leading to recovery of incriminating documents including original educational certificates, admit cards of NEET exam, blank cheques, rubber stamps of educational institutions, etc.," CBI spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said ...

7th CPC: HC seeks Delhi govt reply on plea over alleged delay in implementation in pvt schools

The Delhi High Court today sought response from the Directorate of Education (DoE) on a plea by a private unaided schools association alleging that the Delhi government was delaying the implementation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission's recommendations in such institutions causing hardship to teachers, students and parents. Justice Sunil Gaur issued notice to the DoE and the Lieutenant Governor on the plea but refused to stay a April 2018 decision of the DoE that barred several private schools from implementing the 7th CPC, while allowing others to go ahead. The counsel for the petitioner association, the Action Committee Unaided Recognised Private Schools, said the matter has far reaching consequences and private schools were entirely dependent on tuition fees. The counsel said the April 13 order of the government would also contribute to the delay in implementation of the recommendations, apart from leading to exodus of teachers from the schools, which have been barred for the ..

IIT KGP's VGSOM records 100 per cent placement

IIT Kharagpurs Vinod Gupta School of Management (VGSOM) has recorded 100 per cent placement during the final placement process for the class of 2018. The batch comprising 111 students bagged 126 offers at the end of final placement session, an IIT KGP statement said today. ITC Ltd, Titan, Amazon, JP Morgan, CRISIL, HSBC were top recruiters among the 68 companies that participated in the placement session, the statement said. Several companies such as Johnson & Johnson, Novartis, Nomura and Trident Group also visited the VGSOM campus for the first time, it said. Data analyst, product management, strategic analyst, financial analyst, operations manager and marketing manager were some of the roles that were offered by the different organisations.
