As per the bill, the government shall set up one or more Fee Regulatory Committees to determine the fee structure for any standard or course of study in any non-government schools imparting education in primary, middle, secondary and higher secondary level. The committee would headed by a government nominated retired district or sessions judge or an official of All India Service. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma today said his government has prioritised education and allotted nearly Rs 1000 crore for the sector. Replying to a debate on the Governor's address, Sangma said, "We have allotted nearly Rs 1,000 crore for the education sector. But this is not enough as the financial burden in this sector is high." He said the government has also set up a task force to study the education policy and it is expected to submit its report within three months. The chief minister highlighted the need to release salary of Sarva Siksha Abhiyan school teachers which was lying pending for the last 7/8 months was a big task for the new government. The Supreme Court has rapped the Kerala government for promulgating an ordinance nullifying its last year's order freezing illegal admissions to two medical colleges in the state and stayed its operation. The court's direction came on an appeal by the Medical Council of India against regularisation of these admissions made in self-financing Kannur and Karuna medical colleges in 2016-17. Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today said the government will focus on quality of teachers and will not accept certificates from any doubtful institutes while appointing them. Sarma, during a discussion on education in the Assembly, said his focus is to improve the system, keeping in mind the students' interest on top. The HRD Ministry has warned students and parents against "fake leak mafias", saying a purportedly leaked political science paper is doing rounds on social media. Examination for the board's Class 12 Political Science paper was held today. "Fake leak mafias are at it again. Students and parents are advised not to fall prey to such mischiefs. The political science paper purported to have been leaked is fake. Similar attempts were made in the past to disrupt smooth conduct of CBSE exams," HRD's School Education Secretary Anil Swarup said. The superintendent of an ashram school run by the Maharashtra government has been booked on charges of molesting girl students, police said today. Ashram schools are government-run educational institutes for tribals. The 36-year-old superintendent molested the girls repeatedly in the school premises located in Talasari area of Palghar district, they said. Last evening, one of the victims approached the police following which a case was filed against the school official, the police added. He has been booked under IPC section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act and also the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, they added. Last month, the superintendent was arrested after two girl students of the school, aged 16 and 17, filed a complaint accusing him of molestation and harassment, police added. He was later released on bail.

Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor today urged HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar to exempt CBSE Class 12 students from the economics paper re-test on "compassionate grounds". In a letter to Javadekar, Tharoor said the class 12 students are already in the process of preparing for competitive examinations and are under considerable stress and anxiety, and should be exempted from taking the exam again. The HRD Ministry had last week announced that a re-examination of the CBSE Class 12 economics paper would be held on April 25 following the leak of the paper. It had said the Class 10 mathematics re-test, if required, would be conducted only for the Delhi-NCR region and Haryana in July. The Jammu and Kashmir government today ordered, with immediate effect, detachment of the officials of the school education department, including teaching staff, presently attached in other departments. All the detached employees shall be deemed to have been relieved with immediate effect and directed to report back to their original places of postings in the school education department from where they have been attached, an order issued by the secretary to the government, school education department, said. A researcher killed four fellow staff members in a shooting today at a university in the western Turkish city of Eskisehir, in one of the deadliest incidents of its kind seen in Turkey. Deadly shootouts -- often caused by arguments that degenerate into violence -- are relatively common in Turkey. But a shooting on a campus is highly unusual. Those killed were the deputy dean of the education faculty, faculty secretary and two lecturers at Osmangazi University, the university said in a statement.
