A Bill to allow private universities in Telangana was passed by the state Assembly today. The 'Telangana State Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 2018', introduced by Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Kadiam Srihari in the Assembly yesterday, was passed after discussions today amid a walk out by opposition parties, including the BJP and TDP. During the discussions, Srihari said setting up of private universities was aimed at ensuring availability of worldwide educational and research opportunities to students in Telangana. "State run universities will be developed. Private universities will not be accorded a red-carpet welcome at the cost of state universities. In that connection I give an assurance on behalf of the state government," he said. Over one lakh children in Kerala have left columns relating to caste and religion blank in school admission records in Kerala last year, Education Minister C Ravindranath told the state Assembly today. In a written reply, he said that as many as 1,24,147 children had not filled up the columns while enrolling in different standards of the government and government-aided schools during 2017-18 academic year. Most of these children were students of classes 1 to 10, he said. As many as 275 of them were studying in plus one and 239 in plus two, he said. However, no students had skipped the respective columns during admission in any vocational higher secondary schools in the state, the minister said in a reply to a question by D K Murali of CPI(M).

The Manohar Lal Khattar government in Haryana has hiked the financial assistance for education given to the children of registered workers by 50 per cent, an official said. Besides, for the first time, an incentive amount will be given to the students excelling in class X examination as an encouragement to perform even better, Minister of State for Labour and Employment Nayab Singh Saini told reporters here today. He said the financial assistance to students from class I to VIII has been increased from Rs 3,000 to Rs 8,000, for students of class IX to XII and of ITIs from Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000. For students pursuing graduation it has been raised from Rs 8,000 to Rs 15,000 and for post graduation from Rs 12,000 to Rs 20,000.
