Iraqi Roma village school reopens 14 years after destruction

Carrying her bag on the way home from class, Malak is glowing: the 10-year-old girl has just finished her first-ever semester of school in her Iraqi Roma village. In 2004 armed Islamists attacked the village of Al-Zuhour in Iraq's Diwaniya province, 200 kilometres (125 miles) south of Baghdad, destroying the only school for the marginalised Roma community. "On television, I would see other children with school bags and they looked happy," Malak told AFP. "I was a bit jealous because our school was destroyed years ago," she said. The 2003 US-led invasion and the fall of Saddam Hussein's regime had changed things dramatically for the Muslim Roma minority, who had come to Iraq centuries before from India. During the dictator's rule, Iraq's Roma - also called "Kawliya" or gypsies - were primarily known as professional musicians and dancers invited to feasts, weddings and parties. But since the rise of hardline Islamist groups in Iraq after Saddam's fall, the Roma have increasingly been ...

Music lessons may boost your kid's grades: study

Music lessons can enhance children's memory, reasoning and planning abilities, leading to improved academic performance, a study has found. Visual arts lessons also significantly improve children's visual and spatial memory, researchers said. Music education has been decimated in schools around the globe, due to competition with academic subjects and an increasing lack of funding. These days, the opportunity to learn an instrument is seen as more of a luxury than a necessary part of education, researchers said. "Despite indications that music has beneficial effects on cognition, music is disappearing from general education curricula," said Artur Jaschke, from VU University of Amsterdam in Netherlands. "This inspired us to initiate a long-term study on the possible effects of music education on cognitive skills that may underlie academic achievement," said Jaschke. Published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, the research is the first large-scale, longitudinal study to be adapted into the ..

Gujarati becomes compulsory in all primary schools

Students of the primary schools affiliated to the CBSE and ICSE boards as well as those of Hindi and Urdu mediums in Gujarat will now have to learn Gujarati language from class 1 to 8, the state government told the Legislative Assembly today. Education Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama said the decision would be implemented from this academic year. He said though the Kothari Commission, set up by the Centre in 1960s, recommended that mother tongue be given a preference in education, many non-Gujarati medium schools in the state as well as those affiliated with other Boards are not teaching Gujarati. "As a result, children of this state are unable to understand or speak proper Gujarati. We are confident that this decision would make such children familiar with the language of this state," Chudasama told the House. The minister said the decision was taken with a view to make students of other boards and mediums familiar with Gujarati language. "This will be applicable to ...

"But I have said that a university needed to do whatever it deems fit to ensure that CBSC is rolled out successfully," he said. The CBCS provides a learning platform wherein the student has the flexibility to choose his/her course from a list of elective, core and soft skill courses. The minister said e-pension for teachers in government and government-aided higher educational institutions from the next financial year. On the problems faced by four state
