Rajan, corp leaders team up for Rs 750-cr liberal arts varsity

The past governor of Reserve Bank Raghuram Rajan, captains of corporate India and some eminent academics have teamed up to transform the undergraduate education by announcing setting up of Krea University at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh. R Seshasayee, chairman of IndusInd Bank and the chairman of the supervisory board of the university said the proposed liberal arts university will attract an initial investment of Rs 750 crore in the first phase. "There is a clarity on 70-80 per cent of the Rs 750-crore investment needed. The corporates are doing it as part of their philanthropy activities," he said. The first batch will commence in July 2019, admissions for which will start this November. The fees will be Rs 7-8 lakh inclusive of hostel facilities. The university will initially will run courses from the IFMR campus in Sri Coty, and eventually shift to its own 200-acre campus which will be ready by 2020. Odisha signs MoU with British Council

The Odisha government today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the British Council to strengthen educational and cultural cooperation. Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik was present when Alan Gemmell OBE, Director British Council India signed the MoU with GB Reddy, OSD and Special Secretary of State Handicrafts Museum here. British High Commissioner to India Sir Dominic Asquith KCMG was also present. The British Council will support the state governments "Mo School" (My School) initiative by contributing to the development of English language skills for learners and teachers including government-aided schools. With the MoU, the British Council will expand its existing work in the state. Police stop JNU teachers, students march to Parliament; resort to lathi-charge, water canons

A large number of JNU students and teachers were today stopped from marching to the Parliament Complex over various demands, including academic freedom, with police resorting to lathi-charge and use of water canons. They were stopped at the Sanjay Jheel area in south Delhi. The "Padyatra", which started at the varsity's campus, was organised by the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) and the Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers Association (JNUTA). The associations are demanding academic freedom, accessible and equitable education among others. The teachers' body had requested other associations to join the protest march. Their other demands include withdrawal of the executive council decision to constitute a committee to take action against teachers and the immediate withdrawal of notifications replacing chairpersons who were opposed to implementing compulsory attendance. The JNUTA had earlier launched a three-day 'Satyagraha' inside the campus to raise these demands.

Calculators 'a plus' for students after all: study

Calculators can help students become better at problem solving, according to latest research. Far from hindering young maths pupils, these little magic boxes actually aid them with their arithmetic skills, according to the Academics for the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF). It was also found that when taught properly, calculators can help students become better at problem solving. Calculators are most useful when weaved into teaching materials, the BBC quoted the academics as saying. Ministers banned the use of calculators in national maths tests for 11-year-olds in England from 2014. Tribal students forced to make chapattis in MP

A hostel superintendent at the Junior Tribal Students Hostel in Madhya Pradesh's Guna was suspended on Friday, following the revelation of students being forced into activities such as making chapattis.According to the District Collector Rajesh Jain, Additional District Magistrate was sent on site for further investigations and the allegations were found to be true.Apart from having to prepare meals, the students have also allegedly been forced into cleaning the toilets, with all this happening along with a perpetual neglect for their education.They also have to cope with an unhygienic drinking water system, as the tank built in the hostel building to store water, has allegedly not been cleaned for months.

Annual average drop out rate of girls lesser than boys: HRD

The annual average drop out rate of girls is less than the drop out rate of boys at secondary level in the country, the Rajya Sabha was informed today. "Annual average drop out rate of girls is 16.88 per cent, which is less than the drop out rate of boys of 17.21 per cent," Minister of State for HRD Upendra Kushwaha said in response to a written question in the Rajya Sabha. The enrolment of students at elementary level has improved from 18.78 crore in 2009-2010, when the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 was implemented, to 19.67 crore as per the Unified District Information System for Education (UDISE) 2015-16. The transition rate from Class 8 to Class 9 is 90.62 per cent as per the UDISE 2015-16. As per the UDISE 2015-16, the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of girls at secondary level is 80.97 per cent and the GER of boys at secondary level is 79.16 per cent.

Three students drown in quarry pond

Three boys, in the age group of 16-17 years, today drowned in a pond attached to a quarry at Palladam in Tirupur district, police said. The three, all 11th standard students, had gone to take bath in the pond. The bodies have been recovered, police said.

Martyrs have not got due respect in history books: Union Minister

The freedom fighters who laid down their lives for the country have not got their due respect and honour in history books taught in schools and colleges, feels Minister of State for HRD Satya Pal Singh. "After the country's independence, martyrs have not got appropriate honour and respect in history books taught in schools and colleges," Singh tweeted in Hindi. He further tweeted, " Veeran hain kabren unkin jinke lahu se jalte the chirage vatan, jagmagate hain makbare unke jo bechte the shahidon ke kafan (Lonely are graves of those whose blood used to light lamps in the country, while mausoleum of those are lightened up who use to sell shrouds of martyrs." Collegian expelled for terming teachers 'anti-nationals' on FB

A student of the Motilal Vigyan Mahavidyalay (MVM) here was expelled for one year after she termed its teaching staff as "anti-nationals" in her Facebook post. The post was uploaded after MVM authorities denied permission to hold a programme at the college auditorium marking the death of revolutionary Bhagat Singh. Officials said that Asma Khan, a member of the Bhagat Kranti Dal and second year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) student, was removed from the institute for a period of one year after she uploaded the social media post. "Two groups, the BKD and another students' union (the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad), had sought permission for their respective programmes to mark Bhagat Singh's death anniversary which falls on March 23. CISCE to prepare final exam question papers for Classes IX, XI

From the next academic session, the Council for Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) will be preparing final exam question papers for "core subjects" of Classes IX and XI. Till date, the annual examination papers for the two classes were framed by the respective schools. All ICSE-affiliated schools in the state have received the CISCE circular yesterday, Nabarun Dey, the general secretary of the Bengal Chapter of Association of Heads of ICSE Schools, said today. Asked about the core subjects, Dey said it was not specified in the circular. The CISCE will probably take a call on the "core subjects" in the coming days, he said. "The idea is to cover a sizeable portion of the syllabus in the ninth and eleventh standards so that the students are not burdened before the board exams," Dey explained. The circular has been posted on the council's official website, CISCE Chief Executive and Secretary Gerry Arathoon said.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday has arrested a chairman of Bhopal-based private Medical College in connection to 2012 vyapam scam.CBI arrested JN Chouksey, chairman of Bhopal based LN Medical College in connection to the furtherance of the scam.After taking cognisance, the trial court issued non-bailable arrest warrants against the absconding chargesheeted accused persons. College professor in soup for sexist remarks

Police today registered a case against an assistant professor of a college here for allegedly making sexist remarks against girl students for not wearing head scarfs and shawls. Based on a complaint from a student of Farook Training College, a case was filed against assistant professor T Jouhar Munavvir under various IPC sections including 354 A (sexual harassment), police said. The accused reportedly went on leave after outrage among the students. The audio and video clips of the professor saying that the girls came dressed provocatively have gone viral on the social media. German Prez visits Sarnath; takes part in Ganga Aarti

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier today arrived in Varanasi where he visited the Buddhist pilgrimage site Sarnath and participated in the Ganga 'Aarti' and also visited the Banaras Hindu Universityhere . At Sarnath, he offered prayers at the Buddhist temple and also visited the museum there. He then visited the Banaras Hindu University where he interacted with students and teachersfor over half an hour. VHP's 'Ram Rajya Rath Yatra' continues journey through TN

The VHP-backed Ram Rajya Rath Yatra, seeking to mobilise support for a Ram temple in Ayodhya, today drew crowds in large numbers in this town. The yatra, which was coming from Rameswaram en route to Kanyakumari, passed through the city outskirts, police said. It was accorded a special reception at the Sarada Women's College on the outskirts of the city. Police personnel maintained tight vigil in view of protests from some outfits on Tuesday when the yatra had entered Tamil Nadu at Shencottah. After crossing the city, the yatra will proceed to Kanyakumari district. The yatra, which entered Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, reached Rameswaram yesterday after traversing through Tuticorin and Madurai districts. It will reach Thiruvananthapuram tomorrow. Activists of VHP and some other Hindu outfits, including Hindu Makkal Katchi, accompanied the rath yatra being organised by Sri Ramadasa Mission Universal Society.

Draft National Education Policy expected by month-end: Singh

Union minister Satya Pal Singh today said that the draft of the new National Education Policy is expected to be submitted to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) by March 31. Among other things, it will deal with the issue of place of mother tongue in education and continuation of three-language formula, he said. The five-member committee headed by former Indian Space Research Organisation head K Kasturirangan, tasked with preparing the draft, had not asked for any extension, and will submit it most probably by March 31, Singh said. The minister of state for HRD was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme organised by the Central India Group of Education here. "The new education policy will be basically focusing on accessibility, equity, affordability, accountability and creating skilled manpower," he said. To a question on preservation of mother tongue, a subject which was discussed at the Akhil Bhartiya Pratinidhi Sabha of the RSS here recently, Singh said .
