EC's proposal for purchase of Ballot Units, Control Units approved for upcoming polls

The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the proposal of Election Commission for procurement of Control Units and Ballot Units during 2017-18 and 2018-19The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the proposal of Election Commission for purchase of 4,10,000 Ballot Units (BUs) and 3,14,000 Control Units (CUs) during 2017-18 and 4,35,306 Ballot Units and 71,716 control units during 2018-19 at a tentative unit cost of Rs.7,700/- and Rs.9,300 respectively.The total estimated cost will be Rs.1,009.6 crore. The purchases will be made through Bharat Electronic Ltd.(BEL), Bangalore and Electronics Corporation of India Ltd. (ECIL), Hyderabad.The Cabinet also authorised the Election Commission to vary the quantity to be ordered on M/s. BEL and M/s. ECIL based on their production capacity and past performance in supply of machines.This would facilitate phasing out of obsolete electronic voting machines procured during 2000-2005.It will enable the Election Commission to

Letters: Reassure voters

With reference to "And the winner is…. The Election Commission" by Aditi Phadnis (May 16), former Chief Election Commissioner T N Seshan proved that a person can make a chair powerful. His endeavour to present a full-proof election process was criticised by many. Jyoti Basu, then chief minister of West Bengal, called him a lunatic. In fact, few could imagine that it would be possible for a country with a population of over one billion to prepare voter identity cards. But, Seshan proved his critics wrong.Though a large number of voters turn up in booths to exercise their franchise, there are drawbacks still to be addressed. Introduction of EVM, CCTVs in disturbed booths and distribution of voter slips by the panel are all fine. But much success has eluded in terms of confidence-building measures for voters. Many voters are intercepted by hooligans of political parties so that they cannot reach the booths. Even the administration, the police and the state election commission concerned
