The Indian government on Sunday pledged to end disposable, or single use plastic around the Taj Mahal and make upto 500 metres around the historic monument plastic-free under the Taj Declaration on beating plastic pollution.
: The situation in Kerala at present following the outbreak of Nipah virus, which has so far claimed 16 lives, is not alarming as no new cases have been reported, a high-level review meeting said today. The meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was attended, among others, by Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Rajiv Sadanandan and DGP Loknath Behara and senior IAS officers. The collectors of Kozhikode and Malappuram districts, the worst affected by the virus, participated in the meeting through video conferencing, a press release said. A Taj Declaration to Beat Plastic Pollution was adopted here today as part of which efforts would be made to make the 500-metre area around the historic ivory-white marble monument litter-free and phase out single-use plastic. The adoption of the declaration - in presence of Minister of State for Environment Mahesh Sharma, UN Environment Programme Executive Director Erik Solheim, UNEP Goodwill Ambassador Diya Mirza - came ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5. Before the adoption of the declaration, the Culture Ministry held a stake-holders' workshop chaired by Sharma. Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb today flagged off the first consignment of pineapples from the state to be exported to Dubai. Speaking at the function, Deb said more consignments of pineapples of the state would be exported to foreign countries. The chief minister said "Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a dream of doubling farmers income in the country by 2022. The dream has become a reality here today with export of pineapples." Deb urged the farmers in the state to plant pineapples and bamboo in land lying unused. "We have long monsoon here and bamboo grows in abundance. As their agitation entered the third day today, farmers in Punjab and Haryana continued to dump their produce on roads as a mark of their protest, while vegetable prices soared in several cities of the two states. The 10-day agitation by farmers against the alleged anti-farmer policies of the central government began on Friday. Several farmers' organisations are jointly protesting in 22 states, demanding remunerative prices for their produce, implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations and farm loan waiver. They have stopped the supply of vegetables, fruits, milk and other items to cities. Prices of vegetables and other items have soared in the wake of dwindling supplies of farm produce, traders said. These beaches of Odisha, Maharashtra and other coastal states will be the first in not just India, but in Asia, to get the Blue Flag certification. The Indian beaches are being developed by the Society for Integrated Coastal Management (SICOM), an environment ministry's body working for the management of coastal areas, according to the Blue Flag certification standards. UN Environment Chief Erik Solheim has said that the World Environment Day (WED) 2018 to be hosted by India on Tuesday is expected to be the most "exciting and inspiring WED ever". Noting that WED will be a celebration and a call to action and leadership, Solheim said India is the "perfect" place for that to happen. The growth in the solar rooftop segment has not been significant, and the government may find it difficult to achieve the target of installing 40 gigawatt (GW) of capacity by 2022, say experts. The government has set a target to install 100 GW of solar capacity by 2022, out of which 40 GW has to come from rooftop projects. However, the country has managed to set up just over 2 GW of solar rooftop capacity so far, while the target for just financial year 2017-18 was 5 GW, according to the data from the ministry of new and renewable energy. "Rooftop projects can't be added in that quantity as a lot of structures built were not designed for setting up such projects. Foraying into thermal power segment, state-run THDC India will float Rs 8,000 crore tender this month for providing main package for its 1320 MW coal-based Khurja project, which entails an investment of Rs 12,676 crore. "We will issue notice inviting tender for main plant package worth around Rs 8,000 crore for 2X660 MW thermal power plant in Khurja in second half of this month. We have planned to start the construction by December this year," Director THDC India Ltd Vijay Goel told PTI. While the first unit is scheduled to be commissioned in November 2022, second unit would go on steam by April 2023. "We are mainly into hydro power and wind power capacities. State-run power firm Mahagenco is not keen on taking over the Rs 3,000-crore debt RattanIndia Power owes to Power Finance Corporation (PFC), by buying the former's thermal project in Nashik, a top official said. RattanIndia Nasik Power, a subsidiary of RattanIndia Power, had proposed a 2,700 MW project, out of which 1,350 MW has been commissioned so far, as per the company's website. PFC had earlier said it is in talks with the state government to take over one of the asset of RattanIndia in Nashik to recover its dues. "Yes we have got the proposal from PFC to take over the RattanIndia's thermal power plant in Nashik and we are currently evaluating its feasibility," state principal secretary (energy) Arvind Singh told PTI.
