Farmer killed by tiger in UP

A 45-year-old farmer was today mauled to death by a tiger in a wheat-crop field near Shatepurwa village, police said. The body of the farmer was found by the villagers, they said. Divisional forest officer Anil Kumar Patel confirmed about the incident and said forest department teams were sent to the spot. Nighasan police, sub divisional magistrate and deputy police superintendent reached the spot to pacify the villagers who staged a protest against the incident.

First regional conference of eastern states on Water Resources

The first regional conference of eastern states on Water Resources will be held in the city on April 16 to address the outstanding water issues of these states. The conference will deliberate on finding a solution to mitigate intra and intra-basin issues relating to water resources in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal, official sources said. Union Minister of State for Water Resources Arjun Ram Meghwal will participate in the conference, which will be attended by Water Resources ministers and secretaries of the five states, the sources said. The chairman of Central Water Commission will also address the conference. Hry govt approves Slum-In-Situ Rehabilitation Policy

The Haryana government has approved the Slum-In-Situ Rehabilitation Policy to provide housing facility to the slum dwellers without relocating them to other areas, an official statement said today. Under the Policy, a total of Rs 1.67 lakh per dwelling unit will be provided to the developer for construction of houses. The Centre will provide financial assistance of Rs one lakh per dwelling unit whereas the state government will provide assistance of Rs 67,000 per dwelling unit. The carpet area prescription of 30 square meter will be substituted with 50 square meter, an official release said here today. The slums which are spread horizontally on the government land will be accumulated partially by means of group housing or flats and the area left after providing housing accommodation to the slum dwellers will be given as free sale component to cross subsidise the developers, it said. V-P pitches for renewable energy

Citing the huge demand for oil and gas in the country, Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu today stressed on the need to tap renewable energy. Renewable energy was a major solution in fighting climate change and meet the increasing energy demand in the country, he said in an interaction with the students of Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) here. Naidu said IIPE intended to promote the quality and excellence of the education and research in the petroleum and hydrocarbons and it plans to fill in the skill gap in the oil and gas sector. Results of Swachh Survekshan-2018 to be out by May: Official

The results of the Swachh Survekshan-2018, a government survey to rank 4,203 cities nationwide on the basis of cleanliness, would be announced in the second fortnight of May, a senior official said today. In Swachh Survekshan-2017, Indore in Madhya Pradesh was declared the country's cleanest city. "The results of Swachh Survekshan-2018 will be announced in the second fortnight of May. This time 4,203 cities have been covered as part of this survey," Durgashankar Mishra, Secretary, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, told reporters here. Mishra expressed confidence that by October 2, 2018, India would be open defecation free (ODF). He informed that at present, 15 states and 2,500 cities had been declared ODF. In reply to a question, he informed that door-to-door collection of garbage covered 76 per cent of urban households. 2 trampled to death by elephants in Odisha

Two persons were trampled to death by elephants in separate incidents in Odisha's Dhenkanal district today, police said. The incidents happened within the Kapilas forest range, the police said. The incidents took place early this morning when a herd of 20 elephants were moving around in a nearby forest, the forest ranger in-charge of Kapilash forest range, Darsania Bhoi, said. While one person had gone to forest to answer nature's call, the other was on his way to a local market to purchase vegetables when they were attacked by the elephants at different places. A preliminary compensation of Rs 40,000 was paid to one family, while the other was paid Rs 30,000, Bhoi said.

APAC meet in Indore resolves to free air, soil, water from

A conference of mayors of cities from the Asia-Pacific region here today resolved to free soil, air and water from contamination. They were participating in the four-day '8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific' which started here on April 9. The conference was organised by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Japan's Ministry for Environment and United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD).
