Two persons were trampled to death by elephants in separate incidents in Odisha's Dhenkanal district today, police said.

The incidents happened within the Kapilas forest range, the police said.

The incidents took place early this morning when a herd of 20 elephants were moving around in a nearby forest, the forest ranger in-charge of Kapilash forest range, Darsania Bhoi, said.

While one person had gone to forest to answer nature's call, the other was on his way to a local market to purchase vegetables when they were attacked by the elephants at different places.

A preliminary compensation of Rs 40,000 was paid to one family, while the other was paid Rs 30,000, Bhoi said.
