Rare 200 million-year-old ichthyosaur species discovered

A rare 200 million-year-old ichthyosaur species has been discovered from a private collection, 22 years after it was originally found. Ichthyosaurs were a type of sea-going reptiles that lived during the time of the dinosaurs. In 2016, Dean Lomax from the University of Manchester in the UK described an ichthyosaur skeleton that he had examined in the collections of Leicester's New Walk Museum and Art Gallery. He spotted several unusual features of the bones and determined that the features were unique and represented a new species, which he called Wahlisaurus massarae. "When Wahlisaurus was announced, I was a little nervous about what other palaeontologists would make of it, considering the new species was known only from a single specimen," Lomax said. "My analysis suggested it was something new, but some palaeontologists questioned this and said it was just 'variation' of an existing species," he said. Lomax then teamed up with fossil collector, Simon Carpenter, of ...

Polar bears starving due to climate change: study

The polar bear populations are declining fast as they are unable to catch enough prey to meet their energy needs due to climate change, a study has found. The study, published in the journal Science, revealed that polar bears have higher metabolic rates than previously thought, and the climate change is affecting their environment for hunting fat-rich prey. Researchers have been studying polar bears in the Beaufort Sea area since the 1980s. Their most recent population estimate indicates the polar bear population has declined by about 40 per cent over the past decade. "We have been documenting declines in polar bear survival rates, body condition, and population numbers over the past decade," said Anthony Pagano, from the University of California, Santa Cruz in the US. "This study identifies the mechanisms that are driving those declines by looking at the actual energy needs of polar bears and how often they are able to catch seals," Pagano said. The researchers ...

Karnataka has not renewed permission to Goa to transport the latter's non-biodegradable waste across the border, officials said today. The non-biodegradable waste generated in Goa used to be sent to two cement manufacturing companies in Karnataka. However, since the authorities in Karnataka have not renewed the permission to carry the waste to these companies, it is still lying in Goa. This development assumes significance as the two neighbouring states are currently at loggerheads over the sharing of Mahadayi river water. Talking to PTI, senior Goa government officials said that from January this year, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) has not given permission to the state to transport the non-biodegradable waste to Vasavadatta Cement factory in Sedam district and ACC cement factory at Wadi village. "The permission had expired on December 31, 2017, after which they refused to renew it despite several communications to them," a senior government official ..

January was hottest month ever recorded in New Zealand

January was the hottest month ever recorded in New Zealand, and experts say climate change is one factor. The heat has led to a shortage of fans that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern jokingly referred to as "fan-ageddon." Ardern says that while many people are probably enjoying a great summer, they also need to consider the long-term consequences of climate change, including sea-level rise. Figures released Friday by the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research indicate the average temperature during January was 20.3 degrees Celsius (68.5 Fahrenheit). That was more than 3 degrees Celsius above normal and beat the previous record of 19.6 Celsius set in February 1998. Record-keeping began in 1909. New Zealand has a relatively mild climate that is moderated by the surrounding ocean.
