'Clockwork Orange' frog species named after Stanley Kubrick
Scientists have discovered a new frog species with orange blotches on its limbs, and named it after American filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, who is known for directing the dystopian crime film 'A Clockwork Orange'. Researchers also discovered a species named kamagarini, which means 'demon' or 'devil' in Matsigenka - a language spoken in southeastern Peru. One of the characteristic features of the new species D kamagarini are its horn-like protuberances on the upper eyelids. Both the treefrog species were discovered in the Amazon Basin of Peru and Brazil, and had been previously misidentified as another superficially identical species. Having conducted analyses of genetic, morphologic, and bioacoustic data, scientists from the Catholic University (PUCE) in Ecuador and Centro de Ornitologia y Biodiversidad (CORBIDI) in Peru concluded that the amphibians represented two previously unknown species. China launches new guided-missile frigate
China has launched a new guided- missile frigate called 'Wuhai', which has stronger anti- submarine capabilities, official media reported today. Lu Baoqiang, political commissar of a military base under the Northern Theatre Command, conferred the navy ensign and naming certificate to the new frigate (hull number 540) at the ceremony yesterday after which Wuhai officially joined the naval battle sequence, state-run Global Times reported. The Wuhai is the latest member of the Type 056 corvettes family, which is the Chinese PLA (People's Liberation Army) Navy's main fleet for offshore defense, Song Zhongping, a military expert and TV commentator, told the daily. As China's older generation corvettes, the Type 037 and Type 053, are retired, the Type 056 has gradually taken over their missions, Song said. Congress MP from Uttarakhand Mahendra Singh Mahra said today the party will strongly raise the issue of people who would be displaced by the proposed Pancheshwar dam in Rajya Sabha during the winter session. "The public hearing of the proposed project was completed in a hurry giving no chance to the affected people to express their point of view on rehabilitation," he said at a press conference here. The Rajya Sabha MP alleged that the Modi government seemed in a hurry to construct the project without taking into account the plight of those to be displaced. The public hearing was carried out in a highly unmethodical manner in Pithoragarh, Almora and Champawat districts where the affected population resides, he said. Telangana Irrigation Minister T Harish Rao today urged his Andhra Pradesh counterpart D Umamaheswara Rao to attend a meeting proposed to be conducted in Hyderabad to discuss modernisation works of Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS). Karnataka Water Resources Minister MB Patil, during a recent visit to Hyderabad, suggested that a tripartite meeting of the three states be convened to resolve issues and to work out an action plan for the completion of woks by July, 2018, Rao said in a letter to the AP minister. RDS is an irrigation project located on the river Tungabhadra.
