India sets up inter-ministerial group for climate negotiations strategy

India has set up an inter-ministerial group to develop a "well thought-out view" on important matters to be discussed during global climate negotiations, according to sources. Constituted in August, the inter-ministerial group on climate change comprises members from all the ministries and departments concerned, including the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, Ministry of Power, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, and the Department of Economic Affairs, a source told PTI. The group will hold discussions mainly on five issues -- mitigation, adaptation, loss and damage, climate finance and Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. Five sub-groups, one for each topic, have been formed to hold detailed discussions. Each sub-group has five to six officials at the joint secretary level, the sources said. Mitigation means reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and adaptation refers to the process of adjusting to the effects of climate change. Loss and damage refer to the imp

Extreme weather to stay, we should adapt strategies towards ESG: ITC chair

The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events are increasing globally and businesses should fine-tune their strategies towards Environment, Social and Governance issues, ITC Chairman Sanjiv Puri said on Sunday. Addressing the B20 Summit organised by the CII here, Puri said extreme weather events are impacting the earth as well as human life and requires a lot of attention. Extreme weather events have a deep impact on nature and therefore also on the Global South. This also goes into the design of urban infrastructure and industrial ecosystem, Puri added. This is also an area which is receiving a very small percentage of capital flows. It is certainly an area that requires lots of attention, Puri said. ESG will help companies create sustainable business culture: Experts

Environmental, social and governance (ESG) will help companies create a sustainable business culture which goes beyond wealth creation, leading executives of companies said on Tuesday. ESG reporting landscape is rapidly changing at the global level owing to ever increasing challenges and re-orientation of the corporations, they said. Speaking at a CII event here, managing director of Linde India Abhijit Banerjee said with increasing challenges arising out of ESG dimensions, business leaders in India see a merit to reorient their corporate purpose and extend beyond wealth creation into broader themes that its key stakeholders are concerned with. Sebi allows mutual funds to introduce new categories under ESG scheme

Capital markets regulator Sebi on Thursday allowed mutual funds to introduce five new categories under ESG (environmental, social and governance) scheme and put in place a disclosure framework for them. The five new categories are -- exclusions, integration, best-in-class and positive screening, impact investing and sustainable objectives. Presently, mutual funds can launch only one ESG scheme under the thematic category of equity schemes. The provision of a new category for ESG schemes will be applicable with immediate effect, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said in a circular. The regulator said these measures will facilitate green financing with a thrust on enhanced disclosures and mitigation of greenwashing. Sebi has mandated ESG schemes to invest at least 65 per cent of assets under management (AUM) in listed entities, where assurance on the BRSR (Business Responsibility and Sustainability Reporting) Core is undertaken. The balance AUM of the scheme can be
